  • The Vanilla Bean Ride

I was on a ~350mile ride yesterday. We were 7 riders, went to a famous cafe called 'The Vanilla Bean'(vanilla coke was launched at this place and so da name) for lunch, in Connecticut and came back home. The lead rider of the group...Chuck met with an accident when we were heading back home. He is safe, his gear protected him, but his bike has seen better days. Its a brand new bike, abt 30days old, thats why he sold his old bike to me. It was a horrible crash, all happened in front of our eyes....the bike spun 3 or 4 times, we musta been doing 50-60mph. It was on a state highway. His shoulder is hurt, he is able to move and back home right now. All the pics except the crash ones were taken from his camera, he posted them after getting home.

Two cop cars, 1 ambulance and 2 fire engines arrived at the spot within a minute. They checked the rider and took him away to a hospital. The rest of the riders waited till the bike got towed, submitted our entries as witnesses to the cops, thanked everybody and left home. The fire squad cleaned the whole road.

As described by him after he got back from the emergency ward.

OK. From what I remember of it (because it happened SO fast) . . .
I was leading a group of 7 riders and we were heading down a small hill, which curved to the left. There was a street coming from the right side.
The girl was coming the other way and was going to turn left. According to what the officer told me, she was unfamiliar with the area and thought that the road she was turning onto was the road she was currently following, so she hesitated, then just kept going.
When she finally noticed that I was bearing down on her. when slowed to an almost stop, her right-rear quarter directly in my path of travel.
I did the first thing I thought of and grabbed the front brake. Unfortunately, I squeezed a little too hard and locked the front until it finally lost grip and slid.
I slid to the left of the rear of the car. The bike wasn't so lucky. In a low-side, tires first, the bike impacted the car from the middle of the bike. back, sending it into a spin behind me as I slid on my ass.
I looked back to see the bike getting closer to me and as I did, I ended up flopping over onto my left thigh, still sliding. This is where I slid the helmet on the ground, twice.
The bike ended up coming to rest on top of my legs. I was able to get out for under it.
These were the bikes on the ride
    - 2007 Honda CBR1000RR (crashed today, bought brand new from dealer a month ago)
    - 2003 Suzuki Hayabusa
    - 2006 Kawasaki Ninja ZX6R
    - 2000 Yamaha R6
    - 2009 Suzuki Gladius
    - 20xx Honda RC51
    - 1997 Honda CBR600F3(mine)

    Accident Description Approved

Phew! First thing in the morning. But great to see public help arriving in the form of an ambulance, fire fighting, police in less than a minute! Amazing facilities provided for tax payers in developed countries!

Though would have liked to know more about the ride itself.
The Wheel was a great invention; Two Wheels with a Motor in between was even better!

The pleasure is when your rear wheel slides, and you bring it back; and when the front wheel lifts, you take your time bringing it back.

Here the local fire squad arrives in 2 secs But turns into a firing squad if you've hit a jaywalker or some cattle. 50 mph is like..80 kmph. Looks nasty but glad that the rider is fine.
