                  Day 2: Satkosia Gorge

                  Day 2

                  The first view

After a long and uneasy sleep (mind you, this is my first camping in the openJ

                  Who stole the sun!!

Yati da with the clouds above

We sat there in the diffused sunlight, waiting for our morning tea while deciding the course of action for the day. The tea came in and was booed immediately, compared to the one we had the last evening. I guess the change in shift of the camp employees made the difference. The camp fellows told us there was a trek nearby which we can take before going on the boat ride. We got dressed quickly and insisted that we use shoes to we have a firm footing on the trail. Going up to the parking lot, we moved ahead on the forest trail that had brought us here. The trek guide who came with us took his time to explain the trees that lay on the way and their practical value. I wish I had paid more attention to flaunt some of that gyan

The forest trail (shaky pics due to low light and poor man's CyberShot)

The agile guide was casually jumping across the rocks on his desi chappals, and so was the occasional villager we crossed, while we were finding it a challenge in our shoes branded for treks and hikes. The stream was mostly calm, but noisy at times too. At one place, we had to climb an almost-vertical rock face, of our own height, holding to a tree-branch, then crawl on the ledge to get to safety. Soumya climbed first and helped the rest of the pack. The next peril came in form of a water crossing, where the stream was flowing with some amount of force and splashing onto the rocks. My flat-soled shoes got a slip on the moss, plunging me into knee-deep cold water. Soumya pulled me across and advised to climb to a drier spot. A wee bit shocked, I complied and checked for any injury/sprain; thankfully, none. The uphill climb was almost over as we took to the other side of the stream and landed on (God be praised!) soft earth. Now all we had to do was fight off those wild bushes and trees and get back to the bottom. Not a task! We find some huge mounds on the path, which, the guide told us, was a sample of tusker poop! A wonder how they walk the path so narrow when we are having trouble avoiding the foliage. We descend down to the base where we had started the little trek and move back towards the campsite.

Some pics from the trek...hope for better ones soon

                  Our boat

magar and ghariyalmagar to reappear above water in the enclosure. We crossed a picnic spot on the way which was aptly crowded for a weekend, almost all of them cages (read closed modes of transportation, ala cars, buses and the likes). A long way ahead, after traversing the dusty road, I saw Arnab chatting with some people on the roadside and enquired what the matter was, sensing there might be a problem. My spidey-senses were wrong (darn!) and he was there asking if we had passed by. The adventurous fella had taken the stony off-road which we had avoided.

Last look from the river shore

Look closely for a couple of lazy ghariyals

                  And this is a magar

The ride back to the national highway was pretty uneventful, other than a couple of wrong maneuvers on the village lanes that could have been fatal. And yes, one photo-shoot on the road with all the bikes, taking care not to disturb the traffic. And that I almost hit a dog trying to come out of a house and cross the street on its own. Bad doggie! We crossed a spot where a group was perched on a broken bridge near a water crossing and waved at us. The roads were mostly empty and the few humans that we saw were near the bridges only. Others were already there when I reached the diversion that took us earlier towards the beautiful roads of Tikarpada. We carried on towards the NH and took a stop at the cold drinks shop we had halted at yesterday. Needless to say, the bikes were grabbing attention. We asked for a dhaba which Soumya knew of and found that it was just half a kilometer away, so we cut short the stoppage and moved towards the dhaba. The bikes were parked in front of the dhaba, which was pretty crowded. A table was grabbed and orders taken by the staff. The mobiles were back on duty, as each of us took his time away from the table to report back to worldly duties (sighLcharpai outside the dhaba and it felt so good after years of sleeping on wooden beds. The food was really good and recommended item is a mutton dish, partially burnt. When we started off after finishing the meal, it was already past noon. The bad roads began as soon as Angul town showed its face and my speedo cable came off due to the jerks. The jugaad

                  The Rajpoot

Would have gone on this trail if time permitted

                  J. While the rest ordered a round of gobi and paneer pakodas, the bottle came in and we enjoyed the supplement to our tummies. After paying a whopping hundred-and-fifty for two plates of pakodas
