  • Can an old 125 cc bike make it to Khardung La?

I am a proud rider of a 2003 make Hero Honda Ambition. Rode it on trips up to 550 kms in its heydays. Have been out of touch with biking for a couple of years, but the passion is revving up all over again.

The bike is not in good shape - needs piston-cylinder set changed (knocking), valve timing set changed, and body checked and fixed to get back to its original glory.

I wish to ride it to Kardung La and beyond.

Do you think the biker is crazy to have a high ambition while riding an old Ambition? Can the bike make it?

What things will hinder most? Any suggestions on overcoming them?

SInce when HH Ambition came with 125cc engine?, its either 133cc or 135cc as far it is kwn to me , and an gd service will revive the opposition to the terrain in Khardungla....have full confidence in mechanic and bike & self,i think ur bike may make it to hills

Is this a serious query or a joke? You know that the bike condition is not good and still want to go to khardungla. Do you intend to ride your bike or push it?

Yeh... even bicycles can go to Khardungla (only if a backup van is trailing) but it does not mean that your bike will reach your destination and when you mention khardungla and beyond, where exactly is beyond? Siachen glacier?

Get your bike in top condition and then there is absolutely nothing stopping you from your ambition.

First thing. Would be to be make sure that your bike is in very good shape... So all the necessary work should be done with care especially knowing that it is a pretty old bike.

N i would say you can make it. Its all about passion and determination. Especially with a lower cc bike(lower power, torque) you'll need that much more will to make it around on the hills. And make sure you are physically fit too. The journey might get a little taxing

There can be no hindrances if you have the guts and the passion to overcome any heights..MY friends had gone to Leh-Ladakh on their bikes and they saw a group of tourers with one on a Bajaj xcd 125 cc..SO go for it and post up your ride pictures soon ..

If an old Kawasaki Bajaj Boxer, HH Splendor, Kinetc Zing, etc can do Leh. An Ambition can definitely do it. Just ensure that your bike is in a reasonably decent shape!

I think after getting the bike fixed, make some test runs here and there. If u get the feel of bike struggling then avoid this bike. Otherwise you are good to go.

                      P.S.
Test runs make it with luggage mounted on bike and a pillion sitting behind.

                        My tuppence:
                        a. You seem to forget your bike is 135cc. Its over-adequate.
                        b. More than any regular test - check the clutch and the compression. The latter is what will tell at high altitude - which u cant otherwise simulate in any loaded test runs

@Rpmboy: my blooper - it is 133 cc.
my first challenge is finding a good mechanic. I have met several mechanics in Gurgaon but none seem to have great knowledge. Any recommendations in Gurgaon or Delhi?

@Rockkyyy, Urvashi, BholaBhai, & Prashant: Thanks a ton for the encouragement. There is no lack of will or ambition

@Vishwas: Not planning to take the roads without doing my homework. Will get the bike restored to best possible condition before the ride

@Hitanshu: I will change the clutch plate. Please elaborate on the compression bit. What exactly does a compression test look like?

@OM: thanks man, exactly my idea of homework before taking the plunge. Will get the bike repaired and do a test run.

If you are unable to find a good mechanic then go to castrol bikezone, they will do a fine job

Well i would not recomend the cast bike zone for honda engines...

I have had a bad experience with them and they had screwed up the carb settings and the bike was runing lean and overheated...

So for the engine its better that u take some time out of ur schedule,m visit a few mechs and check their work for themselves...

Especially lookout for the modifiers cos they have better knowledge of the bikes
