    Day 5 (Halstatt to Salzburg)

The rain from the previous night still had the roads wet, but Halstatt was cold & cloudy this morning but the rain gods decided to take a break.

Had breakfast & finished the morning routine of packing, loading the bike and started out along the lake & set the GPS to Salzburg. On the way stopped at Steeg for some pics and then carried on to Bad Ischl.

From Bad Ischl, we turned left onto road B158 and passed Aschau, Strobl, Zinkenbach, Wolfgangsee(lake), Fuschl, Fuscl lake and stopped at Hof for a light lunch. The ride again was thru scenic backroads passing 2 lakes & rolling mountains dotted with small villages along the route.

At the gas station in Hof we met a very friendly mother & son duo who were from Salzburg and they advised us to take a Zimmer (B&B) around the area of Hof as accommodations are generally overpriced in Salzburg city (like everything else!). Besides, Hof was barely a half an hour ride from Salzburg. So we went around searching for a Zimmer. We found one on the road, but the owner had a huge dog there and before I know, my brave wife scooted towards the bike indicating- we search for another place without a big dog! Finally found a place a few kms ahead at Koppl for Euro 38 per person at the Gasthof Am Riedl.

BTW, all the B&B that we stayed at during this trip may be in remote towns, but they all have WiFi connectivity right in your room and most importantly- its FREE. OK, as a bonus some of them also have a huge dog (I can already see my wife turn blue!). Anyway, we put our baggage at the Gasthof in Koppl and headed to Salzburg city.

Being a sunday, I could park at a place that is otherwise reserved for cars right beside the Salzach river close to the Mozartplatz. We put our jackets, helmets, gloves etc into the topcase and then toured the city by foot. At first my wife had a brilliant idea to use the GPS to guide us while walking to various tourist spots but soon we had to abandon that plan as the GPS started loudly prompting in a female voice sentences like “turn right to whatever strassa at 50 meters” etc. Soon we saw lot of anxious faces amongst the crowd staring at us as if we are visually challenged & needed help. So I quietly put back the GPS in the bag and decided to look at old fashioned maps and make our way to the spots. But I had forgotten to switch off the unit and then from inside the bag it shouts out “satellite connection lost”!! We had a good laugh over it that night.

Visited Mirabell gardens (seen in the ever famous Do-Re-Mi song from Sound of Music), Mozart’s birthplace, Franziskanerchurch and few other places. Finally settled for dinner at a Japanese Restaurant and got ripped off on the soft drinks!
In brief, Salzburg has lots of places to visit, but many of it is related to Mozart and the remaining to the Sound of Music. Personally, I feel it’s a small & beautiful city but too much of Mozart could be overwhelming to some.

I am always fascinated with buses

An Indian restaurant- No we didn’t eat there

Mirabell Gardens: Where the movie ‘Sound of Music’ was filmed 45 years ago

This little fellow suddenly happened to pass by

Our expensive Japanese Dinner- Each soft drink cost us Euro 3.80 so guess the rest!

My wife’s fascination for cop cars continues in Salzburg

Returning back to our B&B for the night in Koppl just outside Salzburg

Room with a view- Thank you

Some of the unsung heroes of our trip

Michellin maps, Zumo 660 GPS & Chatterbox Intercom

Total distance traveled for the day 123kms. We purposely kept the ride short today to allow some time to walk around Salzburg & enjoy the sights in this place like regular tourists with a camera hanging around the neck rather than walking like aliens from outer space in our riding suits, helmets, boots etc. So far the trip was all about the ride & not the destination, but for today we decided to keep some for the destination also!

              Thanks nikhilym55.
Loading the pics on imageshack is taking time and thats why each day is being done separately. As I finish hosting them I upload. Sabar ka phal meeta hota hai...

              Thanks shirish & kurtrules.

Thanks vikram. The bike rental for a week was about Euro 860. The accommodation charges are all in my ride report. For the other expenses I have not yet done the final costing as some of my credit card bills are yet to arrive. But definitely the present weak Euro has brought down my costs marginally.

When we reached that point before the Slovenian border, my wife also pointed out this. I looked at it & said- hell with whatever that means, I have 1200cc under me and I am just going ahead. I think it is something to do with the A23 motorway, which we did not touch anyway. Any Italian knowledgeable people here could translate it for us I hope.

                    Day 6 (Salzburg to Munich)

Knowing Munich is a stones throw from Salzburg, we had a relaxed & sumptuous breakfast and left a lil late.

Enjoying some sunlight just outside our B&B

Heading from our B&B towards Salzburg

Although being the penultimate day of our dream road trip, it was going to be the last day of scenic riding, therefore I had 3 route options from Salzburg to Munich- The A10 Autobahn, The secondary road B304 and some interior roads passing thru remote German villages. We decided on the last option.

Passing thru outskirts of Salzburg & heading out of the city

The smell of freshly cut wheat grass and other smells associated with farm work just made us soak in the atmosphere, which I bet can never ever be achieved by any other means of transport other than a motorcycle.

This was a small gravel stretch of roadwork, but my fully loaded RT handled it very well

Probably with week-end etc we were seeing quite a few of these Motorhomes/RVs

On the way we stopped for lunch at Wasserburg at the Landwirt Schaft Restaurant & enjoyed one of the best meals of our trip. Great ambience, excellent service, friendly & courteous staff and most importantly lip smacking food which consisted of Fried fillet of Zanddr with potato salad and Bavarian style vegetable Ravioli with our standard soft drink- Fanta. And all this at a reasonable price (by European standards ofcourse).

                    An immaculate looking Yammie

I guess today this johnny was not in a mood to run by himself!

After a relaxed lunch, we pass thru Ebesberg and set our GPS to our base Hotel Forchammer in Pliening, on the outskirts of Munich. So we bypassed the city and arrived directly at the hotel.

                    Sight seeing in Munich city

                    Local riders ready for take-off

Can we add some more traffic lights on this pole?

Surfing spot right in the middle of Munich city

Watch the roof. The only place in Munich where the Nazi Swastika is allowed to be displayed.

Munich- Beer capital of the world. This single pub supposedly sells 12,000 liters of beer daily

The tricycle for our city tour

Our wonderful city tour guide Mark on his tricycle

Just outside our B&B, nice to see a whole family going green with cycle power

Total distance traveled today including Munich city visit 160kms.

wow amazing amazing pics - love the way U put it across here for us. WOW those vintage bikes seem to b in great shape loved that ol Beemer - so macho

the last "going green" pic is so very inspirational. sure keeps the environ green and keeps us fit and the tricycle

wow - maybe its time we all realise what a great job they had done in india for ages and don't look down upon them. Last time I hired one was when I had to transport a almirah and he was such a soft spoken and humble guy with awesome strong physique. Probably we all in india should also start giving them their respect back which they seem to be getting in other countries.

Day 7 (BMW World & BMW Museum in Munich)

As a dedicated BMW motorcycle lover, this day was reserved to visit the home of BMW in Munich which consists of the BMW factory, BMW Welt (World) and BMW Museum all within arms length from the iconic Four-cylinder BMW headoffice tower in Munich, which I have seen umpteen number of times on TV which they show with rise & fall of BMW shares or BMW take-overs or BMW sales etc. Ofcourse, the factory visit needs to be scheduled many months in advance, which I couldn’t so I settled for the latter two.

After many days of cloud & rains, it was a very sunny day in Bavaria. We left in the morning from our B&B in Pliening, outside Munich to the BMW HQ which is about 24kms. And what better way than to arrive at this BMW landmark aboard a beautiful 2010 model steel blue BMW R1200RT motorcycle.

Watch the BMW S1000RR atop that building

At a distance the iconic four-cylinder BMW HQ coming into view

At the parking lot- Arriving in grand style on our trusty BMW

This C1 was parked next near to our bike

Pictures for the album- Been there, done it stuff…

Ofcourse, there is more to see & shop for the 4-wheeled BMWs, but the bike collection is also nice starting from the earliest motorcycle models made by BMW. Their technology pavilion with hands-on & static displays showcases some really high-tech stuff unrivalled in the motoring world. Also at the BMW welt you can watch people take delivery of their new custom ordered BMW cars, which are presented to them on their own individual turn tables. For BMW bike lovers there is also a free-for-all section where all the new models are displayed in the open and everybody is free to sit on the bikes of their choice and get a feel of the bikes and take pics. In this section there are no annoying stewards or boards saying ‘do not touch’. For scale model collectors, there is a whole range of new, classic & vintage models with super fine detailing to select from, but pricey and most of them run in 3-digit Euro figures! T-Shirts start at about Euro 14 and BMW bicycles start around Euro 800. So here let the pictures do the talking.

                              The show begins here

The Police version of our R1200RT

BMW bicycles. They retail for about Euros 800

The finely detailed BMW scale models at premium prices

                              Some vintage beauties of BMW

Vintage, Classic & new generation BMW sports cars

                              The earliest Classic Luxury sedan

The Clay model used in the design stage

                              Some of the other exhibits

                              That’s a cool dude…..

                              THE MOTORCYCLE DISPLAYS

Just to give you an indication how they are all arranged

                              BMW bikes in Motorsports

Its here that you are free to sit on any bike of your choice
I settled for the S1000RR and the R1200GS Adventure

The farewell shot saying goodbye to the BMW HQ

Depending on your level of interest, you could spend anything from 2-5 hours here. Entry to the BMW Welt is free, but the Museum charges Euro 8 per person and is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm.
Total kms traveled for the day 90kms.

Returned from there back to our B&B and then it was time to sadly bid goodbye to one of the most wonderful & trusted companion of the trip. Yes, its time to part with our sweet bike that almost became a third family member for the past 7 days & 7 nights.

I head to Karl Maier BMW and meet Karl & his wife Magdalena. They are happy to see me & bike in one piece and after the customary inspection of the bike for any damage etc, they give me the green signal. Well, I must admit that I looked after the bike as my very own and it did not have any scratches or marks, a point which I constantly reminded my wife of while climbing & alighting the bike (I think at times it would have really got onto her nerves). Karl & Magdalena see me off with the greeting “we hope to see you back on another trip” and believe me it was with a shiver in my throat and maybe a tear in my eye I said I am madly in love with Europe & hope I can come many more times to enjoy one of gods wonderful creations on this planet.

The following days were spent traveling on the super-fast ICE train visiting relatives with great hospitality & food at Kassel & then in Frankfurt before flying back home to Bangalore.

Our sweet kidos were super excited to greet us back at home.

So now its time to bring down the curtain on 7 days of undiluted fun aboard a beautiful bike, riding amidst absolutely gorgeous scenery, meeting wonderful people and an experience to relish for me & my wife for a long while to come. I thank you for your time and I hope you enjoyed this ride report as much as I enjoyed bringing it to you. I am also hoping that if any of you are inspired to do such a trip please go ahead, coz if myself as a sober rider & my wife as a first time rider could do this comfortably, then anybody can do it. All it needs is some planning and determination. Yes, it will cost you some money, but I guarantee its worth every penny you spend and will cherish it for life. But don’t forget to share it with us….

                              Please keep the comments coming.

                              Signing off & goodbye.
