    • A short write-up

      Day 1

      Saturday, 19th June, 4am

I'm rudely woken up from my deep sleep by the ringing alarm. I hit the stop button and go back to sleep. Then, I wake up, startled.. afraid that I had overslept. Checked my cell and I was relieved to see that it was still 4.20am. Plenty of time to get ready. We were supposed to reach the starting point, silk board junction, by 5.30am. So, I woke up, got ready in a jiffy and I was off. Met up with Eric and Ram at PESIT and we started towards silk board. On the way, few others joined (I don't remember who!). In very little time, we were at silk board junction, in time to find that many bikers were already there. Praful guided us to park our bikes on either side of the road (a service road type) based on which group we wanted to ride in - fast or slow. I ride a P150 DTSi and I was sure I couldn't hold onto 90+ kph for a long time, so opted for the slow group.

By 6.00am, there were almost 35 bikers there. Someone reminded Praful about the stickers and he distributed the stickers - small and big ones. Everybody collected them and proudly stuck them onto the bikes. It was a good feeling.. feeling that we belonged to an awesome group of bikers. Ravi(the CFO) and Ram(Scorcher) took care of collecting money from everyone who was yet to pay. By 6.30pm, everybody had arrived. Praful started to brief us about the ride. Basics of group riding like formations and hand signals, where to stop for breakfast, etc. Lead and sweeps were decided. Then, we had a small photo session.

By 7.15am, we were off towards Yercaud. The fast group took off first, followed by the slow group. Eric did a good job of leading the slow group and we stopped at an A2B outlet about 20kms from Hosur. Had our breakfast there and started off again.

The roads were too good with good sceneries. We maintained 70 to 90kph until we reached a place (I don't remember the name) where we stopped for the Chennai gang to arrive. Took some photos while waiting there. John has some 'special photos' from here!

The Chennai gang arrived at around 10.30am with us bangy boys cheering their arrival. First to enter was xinfii with his mean green Ninja.

What is John doing? Posing on the divider?

In a few minutes, the whole group had arrived. The two blue R15s with Joel's exhaust announced their arrival from miles away. The exhaust note is music to the ears at high revs, especially on the highway when you can here it from a distance. It was then decided that we would stop at the next A2B outlet at Thoppur. The Chennai and Bangy bikers grouped into fast and slow groups and we were off. We reached that place by 11.15am I guess. We were way ahead of time and had to kill around 1.5 hours over there for the Kerala gang to join us a little distance further. We had our lunch here.

After a few photos, it was time to leave. Next stop, Salem. I should mention that from here on, there were three groups - super fast, fast and slow .

In no time, we passed Salem and stopped just before the start of the ghat section. Cooled off a little at this place and some ground rules were set for the ride up the mountain. Single file formation and no overtaking! Although a little too slow, we enjoyed the ride up the ghats. We re-grouped at the entrance to Yercaud. Once everyone had arrived, Kiran took some of the bangalore guys to one of the resorts - Aishwarya Inn. We freshned up a little bit and killed some time talking about the ride so far, about bikes and making new friends in the process.

      Bikes parked at Aishwarya Inn

At around 6.30pm, we left in search of a view-point. We found it and we could see a part of the Salem city from up here. Part of it is covered by a mountain. Santhosh suggested that we go to another view-point from where we could see the whole city of Salem. After some trail searching, we reached the Pagoda Point. By now, it was already dark and we could the lights from Salem below. It was a magnificent sight. Lots of photos were taken here. The boys with their DSLRs experimented a lot in clicking photos of the city; and of the ghat section where tiny spots of lights from headlights of vehicles could be seen. Many people left from here early. Some of us who stayed back went back to experimenting with all kinds of photos. Black Fire clicked many light-effect shots here. We left by 8.30pm and went to MM Holiday Inn, the other resort where dinner was arranged.

Dinner was served at around 10.00pm. Sat around the bonfire and had dinner. The warmth from the bonfire was a necessity as it was already cold. The Kerala gang started arriving by 11.00pm. They were in high spirits even after the long and tiring ride. I was really drowsy by now and left for the other resort. The air was so cold that I was literally shivering while riding. I couldn't go beyond 40kph because of the chilly weather!! Hit the bed by 11.30pm. Had a good uninterrupted sleep, good for the ride back next day.

      to be continued...

      • A short write-up contd...

        Day 2
        Sunday, 20th June, 7.00am

Woke up at around 7.00am and went out to find the bikes covered in dew.

The cool morning weather was a welcome change from the hot weather of Bangalore. After freshening up, some of us decided to ride in search of some interesting place. Found one at about 1.5kms from our resort. A view-point looking down with tall trees.

After sometime, we decided to go back for breakfast. After breakfast, it was t-shirt distribution time! Wore the t-shirts with pride and joy . Some of the guys wanted to leave soon after breakfast. So, a mini group photo shoot followed with everyone making John run up a flight of stairs 3 times for the group photo - a mischief started by Praful. It was a lot fun doing this. He he. (John, upload these photos too!). Once a proper group photo was taken, the guys wanted to leave left.

Next was the grand photo shoot. We found a good spot a little distance away from the MM Holiday Inn. This spot had a half constructed road with a down slope leading to nowhere! Ideal spot for a photo shoot. The bikes were parked neatly on either side of the road and many photos were taken here. The Kerala gang left once the photo shoot was over, before lunch.

We returned to have lunch. After lunch, everyone packed up and left to tackle the ghat section, one by one, at around 3.00pm. Had a lot of fun going down hill!! There wasn't a lot of traffic and hence the enjoyed the ride down. The air got noticeably hot and humid as we rode down the mountain. We had decided to stop at the bottom of the hill after the ghat section. By the time we reached this spot, everybody was sweating! It was here that I heard about hotshot's fall. Was sad to hear it and prayed that nothing had happened to him. We waited for him to arrive at the meeting point. When he arrived, we were relieved to see that he had not suffered any serious wounds, just a few scratches. His 220's front fairing had taken a beating and had to be fixed. Kiran got that done while some of us left for the Thoppur A2B. Reached the A2B by 5.30pm and waited for everyone else to come. Spent a little time here, cooling off. Then, we bid goodbye to the Chennai gang who left for Chennai in style! xinfii had the video camera stuck to his helmet. Wonder how the videos are.

The Bangalore gang had only 14 bikes at this point. We decided to ride as one group, no fast and slow groups. John was leading. It was soon dark and the traffic on the highway got heavier. This made it difficult to maintain the formation. Some of the car drivers got really frustrated and overtook us in dangerous maneuvers. We had to be extra careful, especially with the powerful Volvo buses charging their way past us. Riding at night, in a group, on the highway was quite an experience to say the least. We finally reached the Electronic City Toll Road by 9.45pm. Everyone stopped at a lay bye on the toll road and took the parting shots.

View down from the toll road

Bid goodbye to everyone and we were left, towards our own destinations. No more group riding, no hand signals, no single file and staggered formations. Missed the group on my way back home. Reached home at 10.15pm. I felt that I spent the weekend in a good way. I did what I liked the most, made new friends, and strengthened the bond with the bike.. all in all, I was a satisfied person.

I am happy to be a part of xBhp, as is everyone else on this forum. Looking forward many more rides like this one. Can't wait for the next one :-P.

P.S.: The times mentioned here are not accurate as I have not recorded the exact times.

                PROLOGUE

                [START] Day 1 : Bangalore (NH 7) – Krishnagiri (NH 7) – Salem (NH -7) – Yercaud

After leaving home at around 5:15 AM, I cruised to the nearby toll plaza to take on the newly constructed elevated expressway to Silkboard junction from Electronics City. Yes, that’s where I live in Bangalore! The moment I took the expressway I felt the chill wind gushing inside my helmet and jacket, making my adrenaline pump up! So badly I needed this rejuvenation, I thought! As a part of the habit, I started with a 50-60 k’s per hour, even though the roads were ultra smooth and traffic free. This is only to make the oil reach all parts of the engine properly, before I start ripping!

The gang from Bangalore was scheduled to leave from Silkboard at around 6 AM. There was a havoc turnout and the count was 42 from Bangalore and hardly any last minute drop outs. I was glad to meet Praful and John, the gang leaders from Bangalore and after we were done with the intros the briefing came into surface!

                The Formation and the Groups
Praful briefed us about the etiquettes of group riding and trust me they were invaluable! I never cared about formations or hand signals, being mostly a solo rider. All this was so-so new to me! A single finger pointed upwards meant a single formation and a horizontal sweep meant going back to a staggered one. A staggered one is where the riders are supposed to ride in two parallel lanes diagonally behind their predecessors. The signals for slow down, stopping and hazard indication were also shown and I was extremely excited to see them in practice.
The groups were divided with respect to speed, the fast group consisted of the speedy chaps deciding to make over 80+ k’s per hour and the slower would mean anything slower than 80. Each group had a lead and a sweep and the rules were pretty simple:

                1. Don’t overtake your lead
                2. Don’t fall behind your sweep
                3. Make sure you can see the one leading you in front and the one tailing you in the Rear View Mirror
                4. Take care of the one behind you, if you don’t see him, slow down. In this way, the whole group will slow down!
                5. If you need to stop due to any reason, get out of the pack, reach your lead and ask him to stop!

I decided to join the fast group and enjoy the thrills of speeding; Santa (Santosh) was leading our group on a Comet and John sweeping us on his Pulsar 220. After tank up and air check we decided to cruise along the silky smooth NH -7 towards Krishnagiri, planning to stop at the A2B restaurant at Chinnar 27 kms from Hosur. I was thrilled to the core and could feel butterflies in my tummy!

                  PROLOGUE

This being a Tri State get together, people from all parts of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu were planned to arrive in order to make this a grand event of the biking fraternity. The Trivandrum guys had moved to Cochin on the night before, they along with the Cochin guys would regroup with the Coimbatore folks late in the afternoon and the Chennai riders would join us from Krishnagiri, the plan was laid out in front only to be executed.

We being the nearest from Yercaud in distance were the laziest of the lot, starting at 7:30 AM and scheduled to meet the Chennai guys at around 10:30 AM with 3 hours in hand and only 91 kms to go!

After leaving the city limits and cruising at the 4th -5th position of the fast group, I decided to tail a bit and take a look at the surroundings and also see how the whole formation looked. I was mesmerized by the sight of the mean machines maneuvering the traffic and taking the curves in a staggered formation. I can never forget that sight! Felt like being a part of a parade on bikes! No wonder, every passerby and bystander en route, would stop and watch us go! I am sure they had never seen such a sight in their life! The truck drivers had even gone crazy seeing us and started waving, I was really scared, to see them taking out their hands from the wheels!

We reached the A2B restaurant before 9, had a lot of time to meet the Chennai guys in Krishnagiri, which meant we could take an easy breakfast. The South Indian breakfast, with mouth watering Idlis/Vadas/Pongals/Dhosas made all the hungry raiders go berserk! They pounced on the delicacies with all vigor and ordered the same dishes twice and thrice making the life of Ravi (The CFO for the ride) and Ram (The Bank for the ride) miserable! I loved the way everyone chipped into volunteering and carried the plates to others and believed this is what brotherhood is all about!

After the tummy full breakfast and some free stunting sessions from Subbu, we zipped off to Krishnagiri and waited for the Chennai Kings, not to forget the hilarious hazard indicating signals by some, to the extent of stretching their legs inducing almost a fall! Overall, we were on the verge of accomplishing the first leg of our journey, all unharmed and in perfect harmony, just as the doctor ordered!
                  Thanks,
                  Arni

+100000000.... I had this running in my mind over 2 days!!! Man, everyone has DSLR worth several thousands with reliability; but when it comes to posting pics, everyone has the same issue - trouble posting pics, camera under repair, memory card issue & what not!!!

Where're the pics from John's camera when we made him run up & down several times? Where're the pics when we were all shot attaining motorcycle nirvana on road? Where're pics from Praful's camera when it was clicking pics automatically? Someone was even shooting pics from tree, where're they?

So many ppl took pics of my RX & I hardly see 2 of them now!!! Some were even taking the pics of disc brakes, but none of them posted!!!
