So then on the morning of the 11 day of June, after a scrumptious breakfast courtesy BRO RCC 111 (if you are reading this, you guys rock!), 3 bikes and 1 swift set off towards Sarchu for the night, expecting the unexpected! The plan was to spend the night at Sarchu and cross Baralacha la early morning the next and then have mouth-watering butter chicken for dinner at Manali. The weather was awesome. No clouds whatsoever. Now, nothing could go wrong, it was all under control.
Till about 15 odd kilometers from Rumtse, the road was fine. Nice black top. Then it narrowed down a bit but it was still rideable. Moving on, the road deteriorates more and the tar is gone. Going even further, the road disintegrates. Nothing of it is left, except mud. Lots and lots of mud. Nice fresh black mud that little kids love rolling themselves in. But there were no kids here. There were men on machines that weighed nearly twice the weight of the men on them. Men hate mud and so do machines, especially the ones on two wheels. Primarily because then the wheel loses control over its master and begins to take a walk of its own. Not caring for the frame which is holding it in place and neither for the man who owns both the wheel plus frame and demands respect!

Descended Tanglang la, we entered the Moray plains. At first they looked like the normal Moray plains that I had witnessed on my earlier ride.

Here, just after we crossed debring, Archit took a wrong turn and left us. Some kilometers down the road, we waited for him. But there was no sign of him. After some time, I got nervous and decided to go back and look for the lad on the bullet. Just as I am about to turn back I see a black speck, moving black speck to be more precise, on a mountain road far far away! I presume it is Archit and stay back. 15 mins later he arrives, and finally we move on.
Moray plains then begin to change their colors:
First I see this:

Which then later turns to this!

But little did I know that I was in for a surprise...
Some more:

Then we reached Pang. We did not stop at Pang, as we did not feel the need to. The roads now were non-existent. There were places were ice mixed with mud and sand nicely covered the tarmac and the rider would be caught unaware. Frozen waterfalls were a common sight.
The rise to Lachunlung la again seemed very very different from what I had experienced earlier. I would let the pics explain:
Post Pang

Kangla jal. There's a bridge over it now

Nearing Lachulungla

The landscape was extremely beautiful. Everything was white; Mountains, passes, rivers everything; except the roads. The roads were just as horrible and extremely tiring. We were stopping quite frequently now. Fatigue was creeping in. The feet were cold again due to infinite amount of small and big potholes encountered on the non-existent. The bikes had taken maximum beating, but were still with us, up and running. Even in bright sunshine it was so cold that taking out the camera and clicking was becoming almost impossible. We had not come across anyone who had left Keylong/Darcha/Manali today. I guess there is a price to pay to witness what only a handful can. Our hopes were getting a setback but I was still confident.

Post Nakeela, the roads improved. Gata-loops done and we were heading off to Sarchu, with the road as good as new.

We reached Sarchu at around 4 Pm. The place was crowded with tourist vehicles and foreigners on hired bulls. Some who had been waiting there for the past 6 days!
There were some bikers from Maharastra there as well, who had left Manali a week ago, crossed Baralacha on the 8th and were still in Sarchu wearing off the fatigue. Some too tired to go back, some too exhausted to move forward
We took 5 beds in a dhaba tent on the J&K side for 50 each. Without wasting any time me and Sandeep went ahead to the Himachal side till the Army barrier to have a conversation with the sentry posted there, on the road condition further ahead.

I'd rather be riding my motorcycle thinking about God than sitting in church thinking about my motorcycle.
Ride often, ride well, have fun.

After looking at your pics, I went on to see mine from Aug 2008, and then came back to yours again. Cant believe the differences... Chang La, Tanglang La, More plains... this is crazy and I am still shunting...I'd rather be riding my motorcycle thinking about God than sitting in church thinking about my motorcycle.

@ Kurt: you just stole the show. Despite the fact that its raining Leh these days and each ride from our mates is different, balanced, well-written, properly executed, amazing, charming from the another, you still manage to make us drop our Jaws. Keep them coming in!
all cheers
dcsIts not about the BHP or the CC, its about one common religion called Biking!!!
