Precisely what the rest did when I asked them to accompany me to the check post to analyze the situation!
However Sandeep agreed and we set off to the next TCP. There we had a long chat with one of the sentry there. He gave us the information that there is no hope of Baralacha opening up before 4 days!
There was a glacier that had come down on the road owing to the recent snowfall. The road was open for 17 more kilometers and then there was snow and ice, lots and lots of it, blocking the road. My dream of getting to Manali tomorrow had been shattered. We had come 210 kms in snow crossing 3 high passes on treacherous roads and now cannot go forward.
Baralacha La was 32 from here. Manali was 216 and Chandigarh was 520 kms.
Leh was 260 from here. Srinagar was 700 and Chandigarh was 1350.
It was 520 vs 1350. Kilometers. A difference of 830. Dejected, we returned back to the camps and broke 3 other hearts. There were people waiting there since ages and would continue to wait. However, we could not afford to wait. We had to get back home to our monotonous lives again. The wonderful vacation was nearing its end. We had a life waiting for us a thousand and a half kilometers away in which we were normal individuals riding for precisely 4 kms each day. Individuals with responsibilities, families and friends and lastly careers. No matter how hard it is going to be, we had to do it. Had to show the same eagerness to go back, that we had when we got here. However, we were not completely disappointed. We had witnessed what others seldom get to witness. The most amazing landscapes that nature has to offer, in only on color: white!
That night we slept like dogs in Sarchu. No headaches for anyone, except a mild cold that I caught not allowing me to sleep long. I guess we were all well acclimatized. Getting out of bet lazily at 8:30 am, we all decided that we should head back. Only thing that pained me was the extra 830 kms that we had to do, in spite of being so close to our goal. Anyways we got our machines ready and hit the road by 10 am.
We crossed Pang by 12:30 and stopped for some tea. Then came the most shocking moment 14 kms later.
Yesterday:

Today:

We crossed Tanglangla by 3 and reached Leh before 6. We had a plan to move forward. Sandeep and Rahul were in front of us and we had decided the meeting point to be at Lamayuru and if it got too late, then at Khaltse, which is about 100 kms ahead of Leh.
Got the chains tightened, engine oil top up and we were all set to leave Leh, which we eventually did at 7. It got dark as we crossed the airport and the next 100 kms were done in the darkness.

Tired that I was, slept as soon as I hit the cushion....

I knew that this day was going to be long. Really long!

Crossed Fotu La and then Namik La and reached Kargil. Sandeep and company went into town to get themselves some apricots which were supposedly famous in that part of the town, while we headed for Drass. This time on it was bright and sunny unlike our previous visit which left us drenched!
I guess riding along with people having similar riding styles and temperament, is a pleasure in itself and that perhaps that happiness was being displayed!
Ice walls near the pass

I bow to thee

Vital stats!

Crossed Jawahar tunnel

They were rubbish!
This day, I ought to have been real tired as it was the last, but on the contrary, I was full of energy. We took the routine highway to Udhampur and then the Pathankot bypass. Had some good breakfast at a dhaba en-route and reached Pathankot. Owing to some confusion, Prashant unknowingly took the road to Amritsar and realized the mistake a couple of miles ahead. We waited at the junction, but then left him a message to meet us near Hoshiarpur. He was waiting for us near Dasua. Crossed Hoshiarpur and reached Ropar.

All this while, my mind was transfixed on the hoarding I saw at Batote, going towards Doda! The next ride plan was already in my mind and the route, number of days were been finalized, while on the saddle!

This is very good stuff Kurt. Finished going through all the days log and I liked the two Morah Plains picture, it would have been a great experience to see the difference mother nature makes in just a day.
Luckily we didn't have to encounter tourists at either Pangong or Nubra. Infact at both the places we were the only one when we reached there. We reached Pangong at 4p.m and Nubra at around 7p.m. It feels really sad to think that in a few years these places will be infested by tourists most of whom don't even know the importance of these places.

Two years ago when I went there, I was standing at the shore all by myself. No one turned up for the next 15 mins! Imagine how shocked I would have been this time on!Originally posted by MG_Biker1806 View PostThis is very good stuff Kurt.
