I've wondered about this many times - I own a zma and personally I missed the huge amounts of torque that a bullet has (esp. on the hills).

    However

For each of the 8 days we rode, I never even had to worry about the condition of the zma. Got ready in the morning, put the choke and she started with the first press of the starter. Warm up of 2-3 min and away we went on the day's journey. This was the routine day after day in that grueling terrain.

My question to the bullet owners - Can a bullet do that?

I'm not tryin to put down the bullet here, but If I can convince myself that the bullet can be so reliable, I'm ready to swap my zma for a bullet for touring.
My karizma gives only 35 -40 kmpl in the city. It gives only 32-35 at 100kmph on highways. At 80 kmph on highways it gives 40 kmpl.

If you are planning to go for touring and Leh trip has priority , just go for a P220..maintain it well and you won't regret it.
I was blow away by its performance during HX 5 trip.
We had 3 ZMA's also in the trip and at that high altitude, air filter covers had to be removed from them to perform better. I didn't do anyhting extra. As far as ease of climbing goes, its surey an FI engine and if its Leh(very bad roads) 220 is better.
You guys are talking about ZMA'a relaxed engine - At one point of time during HX, ZMA would not go ahead even if clutch is being released at 6k rpm in first gear..220 was relatively relaxed .FI works wonders in the mountains.
I have had no realiability issues with my 220. It has been on par with ZMA if not better than that. And regarding seating position, you get used to any seating position over a period of time.
Some ZMA riders complined about back pain during HX, i didn't feel that...that doesn't mean that 220 seating position is better than ZMA's, right ??
Both are good touring machines. You can choose what your heart says.
But i would surely say one thing .. if touring in the mountains is your issue , then there is a huge difference in performance between 220 & ZMA. The difference is not very huge in normal conditions. but you take both of them to the mountains and you will see what difference FI makes.
220 is more relaxed in the mountains.

Agreed that FI in P220 makes it a better bike at high altitudes. There is no question about it. What about other reliablity issues of the bike?

What if you had to face in the HX trip 'what Praful and John faced'??

I agree that Karizma is not a perfect bike. It has its own flaws. The positives of the bike outweigh the negatives of the bike.

Anna, the list of If's and But's can go on based on our imagination
220 is a very good bike, service & maintainence is what makes it prone to reliability issues.

am not trying to support the 220 here but wat if the same kind of problem happen to ZMA at those altitudes???

Its pure risk that we are taking when going to such places....we never know when the bike might breakdown!

Bottomline is if u maintain ur bike well....then she wont let you down!

You both are THE best examples for it!

Did you ever see a karizma engine stalling?? I am not demeaning p220, but there are reliabilty issues, even with the new bike. Stalling in the middle of a ride is not enjoyable. Examples: Anirudh, John, and Praful who faced the above problem. I do not think the bikes of the above people are badly maintained.

Ravi, you have taken care of your bike the best, but did it stop you from changing the silencer three times?? (I know this is not going to affect the engine, but this is an example).

i have'nt.....in the same way i still have'nt seen a 220 engine stall except in xbbhp and in orkut. May be the engine stall in zma might have gone unnoticed(read as the person might not know abt xbhp). But am sure its due to bad maintaince.

but u never know when a bike might break down. Its pure trust and belief u have on the bike. I say it again maintaince plays a major factor.

i 100% agree that zma gives a piece of mind over there.

yes but did that stop him in the middle of the road? it was a design flaw and am sure its rectified now!

Bad maintenance destroys the engine of any bike. We have to assume here that the rider will take the minimum required maintenance. That is not the question here.

see as i told u maintainance is imp!

220 had lot of issue's.....i do agree. But show me one such issue in recent times.

They have improved the quality. only the older lot bikes give such problem.

but at any point a owner who has read abt these issues would feel insecure even though he know the bike wont trouble him

Problems in bull will be difficult to solve and reliability is a major concern...zma is very reliable and parts are available. zma been there for almost a decade and its ur problem if ur village or whatever lacks a HH service station..dude HH is like Maruti u find it where ever u go...
Bull although has proven itself for decades it still has the reliability factor that persist.
See Anup though i am saying that the ZMA is the best thouring bike if see the ride and the ride... but again i would like to say the problems with the bullet are easily solveable and if you know a bit about them you can do it all. if you say HH is like Maruti then the Bullet is like a Bicycle that is just every where.

But, if ppl start using the ZMA...then this whole tradition thing(father, son and grandson thing) would also be implemented here..!!

on the other hand, regarding the maintenance problems of the ZMA.....regular servicing meaning every 2 weeks is not required(which is not the case with the bull.....i presume u also know it very well)...!! And now coming to the spare parts problem.....i dont think so everytime you go in for servicing(that too in 2 months) you would require to change one or the other part...!!

I hope i was able to clarify..
Inder if i am not wrong you have a ZMA and let me ask you how many time have you riden or have owned a Bullet. you have a missconception about the bullet that you may need to sort out before you comment. be there do and then comment. 2 weeks do you not think that its sarcastic. and beleieve me when it comes to bullets we dont have to spend loads on those stupid oil thingies like SYNTHETIC and stuff. cause at the end of the day like a wise man told me "HORSE IS MENT TO BE FED WITH GRASS NOT BIRYANI".

ride a bullet some time go on a long trip i know that you have done some on the ZMA and then come back write up a non bias trip log. people like Bunny who just rode the bullet once is a FAN of the old horse.

If somebody wants to keep the bike for their next generation and the next generation, please go for bulls. And please properly maintain it to keep for the next generations.

And if somebody wants to use the bike for 5-6 years (which is reliable for at least 5 years, has good looks, that goes faster, has comfy seat, relaxed and refined engine (no annoying noise at night))and then go to its successor with new technology (which makes it more reliable and enjoyable with very less maintenance) after that, please go for the so called Karizma.

No offences to anybody. Just pun intended. So, the point here is, if somebody likes bull, go for bull. If somebody likes a zma, go for a Karizma, or p220, or P200, or a uni. To ride a bull, you need special character and stamina and special love towards it; in these cases, the obvious choice is a Bull.
