  • Q: Test of my limits - Photi La - Tour Plan

I have done some solo trips in the Himalayas and my last solo trip was upto Hunder and Pangong Lake.

This year I wish to test my limits and am planning to go all the way upto Photi La (believed to be the highest Pass). Although not much information is available but I have jotted down my tour plan for 12-13 days (with additional 3 days buffer) and would like to seek advice (of any kind) of the experienced fellow members. I plan to leave in 2nd week of September, 2012 via Manali and return via same route :

    Day 1 : Delhi ............................ Manali (550 kms)
    Day 2 : Manali .......................... Saarchu (220 kms)
    Day 3 : Saarchu ....................... Rumtse (200 kms)
    Day 4 : Rumtse ...Leh..Khardungla... Leh (130 kms)
    Day 5 : Leh ..... ... Tangtse ....... Merak (165 kms)
    Day 6 : Merak .. Tsagala..Loma... Hanle (230 kms)
    Day 7 : Hanle ..... Photila .... Hanle (130 kms)
    Day 8 : Hanle.. Loma..Nyoma..Sumdo..Tsomoriri (170 kms)
Day 9 : Tsomoriri ... Puga.. TsoKar..... Pang (140 kms)
    Day 10 : Pang ..... Saarchu .... Keylong (180 kms)
    Day 11 : Keylong .... ..... ...Manali (105 kms)
    Day 12 : Manali ..... ..... ... Ghaziabad (550 kms)

Still few Buffer days are left for any adjustment

The ride will be on my time trusted and reliable Bajaj Caliber 115 (The decision to go solo is taken in view of the fact that since I am already 56 years old and so is my bike, not many would like to accompany an old man like me and besides I might get leave from office with lot of efforts with not definite dates).

If anyone wants to JOIN ME, he is most welcome. The schedule can be redrafted mutually.

An image of the route map downloaded from internet is given below :

(Hanle to Photi La is around 55 kms)

Wow Photi-La!!! Best of luck .

But is it higher than Mersimek-La? just asking.
Saw a thread in BCMtouring with pics .Looks tempting .

P.S. Isn't the map also from BCMTouring?

Photi La is claimed to be higher than Mersmik La and this map is not from BCMT but from IM.

BTW this thread was started to get help from experienced travellers. But so far not much help has come forward. As per my information Mr. Kaushik (with family) and Mr. Nitin (with his wife) have already been to Photila (in 4 by 4 vehicles). Has anyone been there on motorcycle, I don't know. I also don't know either is it achievable on my bike, but I will try to do it as far as I can.

My main questions are What places I shall have to mention in the Form for getting my permit for Photi la. What route I shall have to take ? Is the route that I have suggested above OK ? What are the places inbetween Pangong lake and Photila where I can make night halts ? What is the best route for Tsomoriri from Photi la ? Is the Day to Day plan suggested from Pangong lake to Photi La and then onwards to Tsomoriri and back to Pang workable ? Last but not the Least should I start my tour before Monsoon or later on i.e. by August end ?

I would appreciate if I can get some vital information on the above querries. (Not to forget - my bike is Bajaj Caliber 115)

Thought of reviving this thread since I plan to make this trip from 2nd week of September to end of 3rd week. The plan is to leave via Manali and after being to Pangong Lake try Photila via Tsomoriri Lake (I think this is the best route for Photi La which is further 50 kms from Hanle) and return via Manali. Although not much information has come so far from any experienced trekker who has been to this place earlier but I plan to be THERE.

If anyone wants to join me in this trip, he is welcome. The day to day plan can be finalised mutually once I get some positive response from any one.

As usual, I will be on my Caliber 115.

              "Day 5: Leh - Tangste - Khaltse"

I think you mean Spangmik and not khaltse. Khaltse is 100 kms from Leh towards Srinagar.

And also, if you intend to reach Hanle via Chushul, then do find out in leh whether the permits to Chushul are being issued.

                Thanks Vaibhav,

I have chalked out my schedule based on the Map that has been enclosed and as per the map Khaltse is along the Pangonglake and Spangmik is 25 kms earlier near Lukung. In the same map I have now found that Khaltse is also on the Srinagar Leh route. I can't verify these facts as very less information I could gather despite posting this log in February. I have edited the mail and replaced Khaltse by Merak.

In case permits are not being issue via Chushul (as I have also read in few posts), I might take Spangmik-Karu-Mahe-Loma-Hanle route if possible and if at all they issue permit for that sector. Otherwise this whole trip would be jeopardised as this time Fotila trip was my main target.

Thanks again for your response. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I was in Leh a couple of weeks back but they were not issuing permits for Chushul. Though you can go to Hanle via other route.

All the best for the ride

PS: I don't think we have met formally. But weren't you there at the Delhi meet on 19th Aug?

I was also in Leh a few weeks back, and I had a permit for Chushul!! Though I have no idea about the route to Tso Moriri or Photi La.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.

Sir, what you can do is try for the permit at the DC office. If you get it then good enough, in case you do not then you can add another day to your itinerary. Photi la is not higher than marsimik. You can make hanle as your base and attempt to and fro photi la though I doubt that your caliber would make it to the top. Good news is that the road is Tarmac 'd which should make the ride smooth. Around 55 mms from the observatory.

The rest of the plan seems fine.

Yes, I was there on 19th August. May be next time we will meet and have some fruitful discussions.

                        Dear Vaibhav,

I will try to contact DC office from here for the permit issue. As for the ability of my bike, I did Khardungla when the road was covered with snow. May be or May be Not. Let us see. It all depends on getting the 'permit'.
