  • Q: Planning on a Trip to Mumbai

Hi all, I am planning a trip to Mumbai from Bangalore somewhere in November. It looks like almost 1200 KM trip one way (that is via Pune). I have done a couple of long trips but this will be a sort of record for me.

Now the situation is, I will be doing the tour on my 220 dtsi. I want to know the options available to tie by baggage (mostly 1 big bag with all the necessary stuff).

Need some idea on how to tie the bag with bungee cords or whatever to the rear seat. Do I need to attach some hooks or something to do this? As I think the grab rail alone will not be sufficient and I have already removed the Saree guard.

Any help in this regards is appreciated. Would be great if someone can post close up images.

Here are some pics of mine on my ride to gujarat..

Initially tied it with a lot of things..a net..couple of bungee cords and stuff...but eventually only two bungee cords sufficed..

yes for speeds above 100kmph on the highway and all kinds of terrain...gravel,sand,soil etc etc...

even did 98kmph on the rann of kutch with all that luggage

A very good and safe biker not only because he can pop up either of the wheels, scrape his knees on a corner or go fast and make it look stylish but because he very well knows his limits and capabilities and has the patience to learn about others and ride safe ! :)

sorry only had high resolution pics of that ride...

btw this net also helps a lot in keeping the luggage intact..

Thanks Nin for the pics. Finally the D-day has arrived. Man is ready, machine is also ready with 230 cc bore now. Running in completed today. I will be bidding Good Bye to Bangalore as I am moving to Navi Mumbai (my home town).

I will be riding on 3rd November and will be taking the NH4 route. I am thinking of starting early at around 4 AM as I plan to hit the highway as early as possible. This shall be a 1 day journey.

I will be carrying 4 litres of fuel (2 2litre bottles), some clothes and bike papers. I was planning to buy Cramster Turtle for the trip. I will also be carrying my laptop bag (without laptop).

Any advice/help from fellow xbhp members in this regards is highly appreciated.

Need some feedback on the condition of road from Bangalore to Mumbai (via Kolhapur-Pune) and if there are any detours that I should be aware of as I will be riding for the first time to Mumbai.

Also, can someone please advice me on good quality pumps on the way to Mumbai. I do not want to carry extra fuel in bottle, however, as I am running big bore, I do not want to take chances with adulterated fuel.

My bike has capacity to take in 15 litres of usable fuel at one go, and as per my calculation I will be needing atleast 40 litres of fuel (assuming an average of 30kmpl)

And finally, is anyone riding towards Pune/Kolhapur on that day? May be we can accompany each other.

Hope you're aware that 2nd Nov is when the Interstate G2G is happening at Chikmagalur, which is not very far from Bangalore

Waste of precious space!!! I know Pulsar give more fuel range than CBR, but still, have this in handy...

            Nelamangala HP fuel station
            Davangere Indian Oil (Siddeshwar Petroleums)
            Dharwad (Five Star Highway Service)
            Vadgaon (HP Highway Services)
            Thaabvade (Shirole Brothers)
Lonavala - plenty of fuel station on all brands

All the above fuel stations are top notch & accept credit cards

Absolutely no deviations; follow the above route (they're also present as sign boards through NH4)

Hope you know how to take NH4 from Pune towards Mumbai via NH4 & not the Expressway

Hi Aargee, thanks for replying. Does Chikmagalur come on the way to Mumbai? If yes, what time are you guys planning to meet & will you be riding towards Mumbai on NH4.
I am on a tight schedule and need to reach Mumbai before the Volvo reaches ;P . My wife thinks I am coming by Volvo.

That's a valuable piece of information. Will then drop the idea of carrying extra fuel in bottle. What say?

Hi Guys!!! The D-day has finally arrived. I will be riding to Mumbai from Bangalore on 3rd November. I will be leaving at 4 AM. A last call for anyone planning to ride on that route that day?

Also, thanks a lot to Aargee and Antz for their inputs.

Can anyone from Bangalore help me in tying my back pack with bungee cords? I mean give me a demo or something, I am really not sure how to tie/hook it. I am not sure if hooking it to Rear mudguard is a right idea. I don't want any drama with the backpack on the way to Mumbai.

Any help in this regards is highly appreciated.....

^^^ What is that you're trying to tie in the rear of P220? BTW, the distance from Bangalore to Thane is not more than 1000 Km

I am relocating from bangalore to Mumbai. I will be sending most of the stuff tomorro via Packer& Movers. However, in my backpack, I will be carrying a few important docs, clothes - as I will be joining new office on Monday and Packers take sometime to deliver - a Bottle of Oil to top up in between. I guess thats it.

Cut your engine oil too!!! For less than 1000 Km trip you don't have to even top up engine oil...unless your engine is puking white smokes. Ride absolutely tension free!!!

IMHO, backpack is more than easy to pack; just buy 3-4 bungee chord (if it's like Swiss Gear & the weight of the bag itself is about 2 Kg); bed it on the rear seat & fasten it with the chords from left to right in weaved fashion. You're all done

I have tied a huge backpack, the backpacking kind onto the rear of my 220. I will be doing it again in a couple of days.

Take backpack and keep it parallel or perpendicular to the seat, depending on size of backpack. Take two bungee cords and one nylon (non-stretchable) cord. Tie the nylon first. Make the first knot at the top of the shock, where the nut is. Fasten it properly. Then take the cord across to the pillion grab bars. Loop it around that, pull and tighten and tie another knot. Take it across to the other side pillion grab bar, do same as before. Then finally cross it over to the other side shock, loop it, tie it, knot it and bring it back up onto the top where you tie the final knot. Now do the same with the two bungee cords. You are sorted for the entire trip, without having to check your luggage even once till destination.

The bungee gives the elasticity, so the luggage has sufficient play when you pot-holes at speed. And the nylon gives the firmness, to ensure that the luggage doesn't move too much.

Hope you have been able to picture what i just said
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Finally I made the trip to Mumbai on 3rd November 2012. Initial plan was to start at 3 AM, however as it was my last day in office, the farewell party went on for long and I stuffed in too much food that made me sleepy. Spent the night at my friends place (AshuNik) and started at 06:30 in the morning. Thanks a lot to Ashish and his wife for the lovely dinner and wonderful hospitality.

Before the journey I made a few preparations. I got stiffer clutch springs a week before from Joel. I had got the Big Bore, Big Carb & Simota filter installed around 20 days before that and Running in was done before installing the stiffer springs. I also got the bike checked and fine tuned further at Nisar's Garage in Kalyan Nagar.

For the journey I had purchased 8 bungee cords for a total of Rs.270 . I also had 2 nylon ropes available. I was initially very worried about tying the luggage to the bike, as I had 3 bags, and was running short of ideas. Fortunately, Ashish & his wife came to the rescue. They reduced 3 bags to 2, and also helped in tying the bags to the rear seat. Thanks a lot guys, the luggage did not even move an inch during the entire ride.

As I started to ride at 6:30 I was initially not too confident as I felt the luggage might come loose if I was not careful, however, just 100 KMs into the ride, and all the fears were banished and I was concentrating more on making up for the lost time as I wanted to reach Pune before the sunset.

I would like to thank Aargee for all the help he provided. The route map and the list of Petrol Pumps that he supplied were all useful.

The Indian Oil pump at Davangere was a lifeline. I was running very low on fuel before I reached the pump. I had a print out of the list of Pumps that you had provided.

Next I tanked up at Dharwad (Five Star Highway Service), and then at a pump before Satara, and finally at Shell in Pune.

The best thing is, quality of fuel was good, and bike performed really well.

My initial plan was to ride for an hour and then take a break for 10-15 minutes. I had set a target of 100 KMs for every hour between breaks. I wanted to reach my home in Koperkhairane, Navi Mumbai before 9:30 PM.

I was doing an average of 80-90 KM every hour till around 2 PM. Once I reached Hubli at around 1:30 PM, I decided to increase the speed and reduce the number of breaks as the roads were beautiful, and I had to reach Pune before the Sunset.

From Pune till Satara, I was like flying, with speedo indicating more than 125 km/hr for the major part of the journey.
I was very impressed with the way bike was performing. All those Mods, were working in unison. In short, it was FUN. Yes, fatigue was getting into me, and my knee joints were starting to hurt, but the joy of riding pushed me further.
I made it to Pune by 6:45 PM. Took a halt at Shell Petrol Pump, tanked up bike, and started off to my final destination. I reached home at around 8:30 PM, 1 hour before the target. On reaching home, I informed all my friends about my safe journey.
It took me around 14 hours to cover a distance of 1000 KMs.

On the way I was cheered by many people. A couple in Safari, a truck driver, petrol pump attendants.

Next day I took the bike for servicing and got the oil changed. Old oil had become thick. Bike is performing very well in Mumbai now.

Once again I would like to thank Ashish, his wife, Aargee and to everyone who helped me in making this ride successful. Yes, I will upload a few pics later.

And yes a big thanks to Joel as well. The bike is performing as per my expectations and I am definitely looking for more Mods.

Will visit him sometime in November next year for next level of Mods.
