  • Bangalore Chandigarh BikeTrip Solo

So finally, the time has come, for me to get into the detailed route for my upcoming biketrip in July, for which i really need all the expertise and insight from the fellow members!
    Bike: r15 v1 (2010 model)

Till now, actually 24th May , i did 600kms in 12 hours which included sighseeting (chitradurga fort) and stopping for lunch and fuel stops. It was just cause of the heat i felt exhausted but i could have easily done more had i had proper sleep, food and water.

The overall plan is Kanyakumari-Khardungla. Till Chandigarh , it'll be a solo ride after which my friends will join me for leh ladakh. Since because of the dates, and my own limit & potential, i plan to do Kanyakumari a week before embarking from Bangalore. So it won't be a continuous Kanyakumari-Khardungla ride persae, but nevertheless i want to do it.

I plan to start on 5th July '14 from Bangalore. 12th july '14 is when we (me and my friends) plan to start for Leh Ladakh, so i have a good 7 days to reach Chandigarh.
I have to/want to spend 1-2 days in Mumbai and 1 day in Jaipur.

Please help me out with the itinerary. I prefer national highways rather than state highways even if it involves more riding, what i mean is prefer good , well laid tarmac.

    Planned trip:
5th July: Bangalore - Pune - Mumbai (if possible)
6th July: Pune - Mumbai (rest)
    7th July: Mumbai ( meet friends )
    8th July- Mumbai - Ahemdabad - Udaipur - Jaipur (possbile ?)
    9th July - Udaipur - Jaipur
10th July: Jaipur (relatives, sightseeing ?)
    11th July: Jaipur - Chandigarh

12th onwards is Leh Ladakh ( for which i'll refer to the 2014 planner )

How does it sound ? I'm sorry but i dont have much idea about road conditions after Pune. Also heard some express highway in Rajasthan doesnt allow bikes?

PS: is it at all possible to do Bangalore-Mumbai in one day or would it be an overkill ?
PPS: is it at all possible to do Mumbai-Jaipur in one day or would it be an overkill ?

BLR-MUM is 1000 kms and Jaipur is another 1000 kms. I hope you want to enjoy your trip and not race against time. Why take unnecessary risk?

Definitely not worth taking the risk, but if the highways are cool ( like the bangalore - chitradurga highway ) i guess 1k kms can be done easily I got bored riding on it actually, bikes should have cruise control

What would be a good stopping point between Mum-Jaipur ? So that the next day i can easily cover the remaining distance to Jaipur and not feel exhausted.

Bangalore to Kolhapur is one boring straight highway so you can literally fly on it, taking into account there is no traffic. But starting from Kolhapur till Satara, you would face bumpy and under-construction roads at places. The bumpy roads are very irritating because there are some sudden patch works which would tend to harm you if you are not careful. From Satara to Pune, the road is better, but not perfect to maintain 100+ speeds, so please be careful. I would suggest you take ample amount of rest once you reach Pune before you head towards Mumbai. Best of luck !

Thanks for the info. I guess a night stay in pune wouldnt harm me.
Pune-Mumbai we cant take the express way since bikes arent allowed. How's the alternate route? Any specific route i should follow ?

I'm very skeptical about Gujrat and Rajasthan. Those are 2 states i have never been to and i dont know anyone there esp Gujrat. Even in Rajasthan i heard there is an express way that you cant take if on bike ?!

Though doing 1000km in a day on good roads is no big deal when riding solo, you can push hard since you don't have to wait for any slow movers. But remember a couple of things.

              1. If it starts raining you are F******
              2. If it doesn't rain and the sun is super strong, you are F******
              3. If you do not get sufficient sleep and try riding in that condition you are F******
              4. Even if you have got sufficient sleep, riding on arrow straight roads with little traffic for long periods of time all alone is exceptionally boring, sleep catches up and you are F******

Decide on your objective for this trip are you to enjoy yourself or are you doing this trip to 'boast' about it and post it on FB.

If travel is your objective then travel, don't pelt it.

If Leh is your objective, then ship your bike there and go meet your friends in Bombay and then go on to Chandigarh by train/ flight/ teleporting etc.

If K2K is your objective, then slow down and enjoy the scenery, it is a long haul, just not worth the risks.

My advice as a solo tourer, ignore friends and relatives () they are a major PIA. Spend the same amount of time exploring the surroundings and travelling fewer km per day.

              Finally, All the Best
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Agree with you on the getting F***** part. Nowadays i see many, many bikes riding with earphones on even with a helmet. Some folks suggested me the same for longer rides but i just dont feel safe with the whole idea. Even on highways, i barely manage to maintain 120kmph and beyond that i'm just apprehensive.

This trip has been on my mind since i guess 12 years back when i was in school and didn't have a bike but longed for it every second. When i did get my bike, 6 years later, even then i didn;t feel like embarking on the trip cause then again i'd have to ask money from my parents. Now when ive started earning, i made a RD from the very first salary, and now its getting matured, which will sponsor my trip.

Since my dad's in the army, i have seen All Indian states, and seen as in spent at least a month in each state. Only Gujrat and Rajasthan are the 2 states i have not yet set foot into. You might find it funny, but my secondary objective from the trip is to eat the authentic food of Maharashtra, Gujrat and Rajasthan. Im a big foodie thats why

Objective isnt leh, or K2K or facebook status either, its just inner satisfaction of travelling, checking out new places, eating new stuff, meeting new people

PS: Please help me decide a route after Mumbai - Jaipur. Which way to take, where to halt etc etc. As i said i have no idea whatsoever.

                    @joshi.varun91,
sorry to mention but you are lacking with lot of initial plans.

I can suggest you an itinerary with food/night/sight seeing stops

day1) Bangalore to pune around 850kms- easily you can do in 1 day with 4-5 stops, via GQ.
Food joints at Sira, Chitradurga, Rannebenur, Dharwad-Belagum crossing, Belagum, Nippani, Kolhapur Bypass, Karad By pass, Satara.
For sight seeing Chitradurga, Dharwad, Belgaum Nippani and ghat section after Satara is best.
                    Night Halt Pune.

day2) Take half day rest as per your convenience, start for Mumbai also. As you will be crossing Lonavala and by that time Monsoon will be there so do carry rain gear.
Keep in mind as you will be riding through so from pune you have to take old Pune Mumbai Highwat, because the newer one is expressway and so bikes not allowed on it.
Old Pune -Mumbai highway is narrow, but lot of greenery and food joints. After exiting Lonavala be careful as you have to take a turn towards Khopoli and avoid Pune-Mumbai expressway. SO take this route Khopoli-Chowk-Panvel-Navi Mumbai -Mumbai.
                    Night Halt Mumbai

                    day3) meet with your friends
day4) Mumbai-Thane-Vapi-Surat By pass-Baroda-Ahmedabad By pass- Himmatnagar - 610kms/Mumbai-Thane-Vapi-Surat By pass-Baroda-Ahmedabad -520kmsComplete route has lots and lots of food options.
Whole route is either 2-4 lane roads on either side with lot of sight seeing.
Stick to NH8 and easily by pass Surat. Entry and exit of Bharuch you will have lots of truck traffic. From Baroda again you have to take old Baroda Ahmedabad Highway as new highway is expressway so again bikes not allowed. By pass Ahmedabad and go ahead to Himmatnagar. After by passing Ahmedabad there will be only 2 lane roads upto Himmatnagar without any dividers and crazy traffic and ya lots of F******* up senseless drivers. Take night halt at Himmatnagar.

And if you are too exhausted on this day(most probably it will happen as this stretch is very tiring and if either of heat or rain is extreme it will slow you and make you tired like hell) then better take halt at Ahmedabad.

                    day5)Himmatnagar - Udaipur 180kms/ Ahmedabad-Udaipur 270kms
                    Lot of food joints again
Here distance is short but do spend time in Udaipur and you will love to do it. All Rajputana style ambiance and the famous city of lakes. It will take time and you will love it
                    Halt at Udaiput

                    day6) Udaipur-Jaipur-Gurgaon-Delhi-680kms
Lot of food options all upto Delhi
Start early and stick to this route. All road conditions are good. If you will be lucky enough in terms of weather then you will be able to reach Delhi by Dawn.
Do you want to take break here in Jaipur????
If yes then you can do is on previous day start early from Himmatnagar, rush to Udaipur, spend some time in sight seeing and then start for Jaipur. As your Relatives(mentioned by you) are their you can tolerate reaching late. and then on this day6 start from jaipur bit late and reach Delhi By night(but delhi traffic would be waiting for you )

                    Day7)Delhi-Chandigarh 270kms
Lot of eateries on this route
Just be cautious as road work is going on specially near Karnal(confirm once) and near Kurukshetra. Stick to GT Road.

Wow, Thanks, really. That made my life so much easier. Couldnt have asked for a more detailed route. Seriously thanks

I know i really havent done my homework. Earlier i had planned to fly to chandigarh and then rent a bike to leh, so most of my research was Leh-Ladakh based. But as i said earlier in my post, i have always dreamt of a really long bike ride. Just me on the road , immersing myself in the environment , solitude. Hence i made sudden change in plans and decide to ride my way till there and back.

Spent a lot of time in researching for the perfect riding gear, so now im totally geared up. Now it was just the route to be taken care off, which you have spoon fed me literally. Thanks a lot man, seriously.

No bikes on expressway is really a letdown, but then i do see the reasoning behind it.

I was considering a day stop at Jaipur and not Udaipur since i'm really fascinated my forts and Jaipur could offer me that. Went to chitradurga last weekend and loved the fort for all its defenses cleverly designed using the terrain and rocky mountain structure.

                        Welcome mate.
I have edited the post again, just read through it and have added the plan for Jaipur stop also.

                        Regarding long rides.
Your own preparation is must which requires:
                        1) Personal preparation towards health.(mental and physical prep is uttmost.)
                        2) Pepping up the bike and preparing it.
                        3) Used to long trips and some endurance too.
                        4) Getting accustomed to riding gears.
                        5) Accustomed to riding with luggage and baggage.

Never let over confidence creep in in such plannings. and never under rate too.

Riding gear: Spartan Helios, Spartan Ares, MT Helmet, Viaterra Claw(yet to buy), Spartan Pegasus(yet to buy)

Now almost every weekend i go on longer rides just to get used to the riding gear and understand the complexities of riding long distance.

The whole Chitradurga trip ( 600 kms in 12 hours ) i learnt that sleep, food, water are very important. Not just drinking water but even food is very important ( i didnt eat anything till 2pm ).

I also have to learn how to do minor fixes to r15, and carry clutch wire, accelerator wire spares.

                            Re: Bangalore Chandigarh BikeTrip Solo

Hey bro, first of all super best of luck for your big tour. Just stay at Pune, we can meet up then.

                            Regarding the patch from Bangalore-Pune:
                            1. Till Kagal (20 kms before Kolhapur): No issues at all. Super roads and super road surface. Even if it rains you can maintain a steady speed of 100+ kmph as there's almost no traffic. Just be a little careful while passing Hubli-Dharwad stretch as it is a two-way narrow highway.

                            2. After Kagal to Satara, road conditions have improved a lot. I had been on this stretch both in January and May this year, and I have noticed some significant improvement. So you can maintain 80+ kmph. But there will be lots of traffic from Kolhapur, so be careful.

                            3. From Satara to Pune, lots of traffic again and with many diversions. So it will be risky to ride at 80+ kmph, as you can expected lots of unexpected actions from many fellow traffic.

                            4. Stay at Pune. As July is when the rains hit most this part of India. So staying back at Pune will be a better idea as it will take around 13 hours of ride, including breaks. And if you continue till Mumbai, you'll have to pass through very heavy rainy areas, which will put a stress on you. So my suggestion would be stay back at Pune, then next morning start fresh for Mumbai. Trust me, the old highway, during this season, offers too much greenery and mindblowing landscapes. Also it becomes risky as you will have to be in the Mumbai-Pune expressway for around 7-8 kms, where both the expressway and old highway becomes the same and passes through the highest point of the Mumbai-Pune stretch, covered with fog. So be careful during this stretch.

Thanks man, Pune stop is finalized now. A friend of mine who's a Capt in the Army called me up unexpectedly yesterday, and insisted i stay overnight at his place. So 5th july is def in Pune, and sure man lets meet up, better, how about a Pune-Mumbai ride the next day ( heheheh )

I visited Pune about 10-12 years back and have heard so much about Pune that i really wanted to check it out. While coming back, ill deff plan a longer stay in Pune and check it out. Wanna eat the authentic vada pav and dhabelli

PS: i would still need tips from you on maintaining the bike. Previously you've helped me out so much that i'll deff need more advice.
