  • Prerequisite for a long tour

Hi fellow xbhpians, I was planning for a long trip and would like to get some things cleared from the experts. It would be my first long ride so please point me out in the right direction. Here are the details.

    Trip
    Start: Bangalore End: Dhanbad, Jharkhand

    Bike
    Pulsar AS 200

    Some general questions

    1. What documents except license, insurance, emissions certificate, do I need?
Is NOC(No Objection Certificate) required for travelling specially when crossing state borders?

    2. Bike is registered in Karnataka so any problem that can arise with a Karnataka number plate anywhere?

    3. I am Hindi speaking so any problems can that bring?

    4. Any pointers when dealing with cops.

    5. Any other solo riding tips.

    Questions related to the trip

    1. Can you suggest some decent and by decent I mean safe places for a pit stop and night stay.

    2. Any specific route to take

    3. What network sim should I take? I have seen Jio and Bsnl to be good in remote locations around karnataka.

    4.Maps may be?

    5. Should I carry a DSLR camera? If yes what lens to go with it.

    6. Will be doing this in January so any pointers will be appreciated.

Well that is all the questions I can think of for now

Answer - Keep Original RC with you in your bag. Get color photocopy of your RC, make it 2 or 3 sets. When asked for the papers first show the photocopy of RC, Original Insurance (keep Insurance photocopy as well in your Bag) and PUC.
If the Bike is in your name then no NOC is required if you are riding it anywhere in India.

Answer - NO issues on number plate, just make sure the number is not any jazzy stylish type as then police will get an excuse of stopping you and taking money from your. Make it simple one, white plate with numbers written properly in Black.

Answer - No its our National Language, just be polite and speak nicely, it helps.

Answer ( to both 4th & 5th point) - Just try to be away from them, its better you avoid dealing with them. Now about Solo Riding Tips:
      a) Plan your route properly as per the kms you will be able to ride in a day.
      b) Since you said its your first long ride, plan a destination to reach before sunset.
      c) Keep your motorcycle in top condition, don't wait to see the fuel tank empty. Once your fuel is 1/4th of the tank capacity and you spot a fuel tank - refuel it.
      d) Carry water and some snacks, like chocolate or chips or biscuits.
      e) If you going to ride in coming days, please be sure to know the fog conditions.
      f) Wear warm and keep your mobile charged up. Carry power bank or get USB charger for motorcycle. Keep your near and dear ones updated.
      g) Avoid any confrontation from the locals of the are you crossing by. Dont forget you are a stranger they are not. So keep yourself grounded.
      h) Carry basic tools for the motorcycle - puncture repair kit (for tubeless), wrinch and spanner for opening the tyre if needed (tube type). Plugs, spare fuse, spare headlight bulb.
      i) Do carry spare keys for the Bike and keep it safely.
      f) Wear your riding gear, and wear warm.
      g) Do not keep cash at one place, keep it spread over at different places.
      h) If riding in fog, try some additional fog light and strober light. The more visible you are on road the safer you will be.
      i) For first time riders, avoid riding in night.

Answer - Plan a place to stay as per the route you decide. You can then go to some hotel and check out. While selecting Hotels, make sure its not in an isolated place, you can try OYO room. They are good and safe and reasonable priced.

Answer - You will be riding so you should be the one who should decide the route as per your convenience. As per me the best route would be : Banglore - Vijaywada - Vishakapatnam - Bhubneshwar - Dhanbad. But rest depends on you.

Answer - what works better you should know it. So carry that.

First thank you for your time for such a detailed reply.

[QUOTE=Shivanshu;1268623]Great all the best. it will be in total of approx 2000kms. Which route have you decided?

I too think that the coastal route will be a good option.

What is PUC? Is it pollution certificate?

Answer - Yes if you have a GPS then you can check google maps, or else with the break points per day carry the print outs.

I'll have offline maps and printed maps, doesn't hurt to carry them.

All your replies were really helpful and was much appreciated. Thank you

Thanks for the tag @The Monk.
@xttony, this is doable via multiple routes. 3 days, chilled ride one way!
You can carry whatever equipment/money you want, provided it is not exposed! Carry a tank bag for camera, wallet and basic essentials (like wet wipes, biscuits, glucose sachets etc). Clothes and lots of water water must be put in proper saddlebags. I won't recommend wearing a back pack for 20 km, let alone 2000 km.

            Now, pre-requisites:
            1. All vehicle documents (RC, DL, PUC, Insurance) - no need to carry NOC for crossing any state borders.
            2. Chain lube and essential spares (levers, cables, bulb, torch, basic tools)
            3. Carry some extra cash (if possible). Spread it out like our dads do. Some cash in different places.
            4. Preferable pre-book your place of stay. Don't race to the destination.
            5. Lots of patience and a strong derriere. Do a couple of endurance rides in the meanwhile.
            6. P.S - wear loose boxers underneath. No frenchies please!

            My preferred route : Bangalore - Tirupati bypass via Srikalahasti - Nellore - Rajahmundry (day 1 halt) - Vizag/Anakapalle (take Vizag) - Srikakulam - Berhampur - Bhubaneshwar - Cuttack (Day 2 halt) - Bhadrak - Balasore - Jamshedpur - Purulia - Chandankyari - Dhanbad/Bokaro (destination on day 3).

You can also take the Asansol route from Kharagpur (via Bankura) on day 3, but beware of unruly drivers and riders.

Lastly, please read through my trips from a couple of years back. I have mentioned a bit about roads in various places in Andhra/Telangana and WB and they're still the same. So you'll be well informed and prepared in advance.

Re: Prerequisite for a long tour

Thank you Mr. Divya, I am greatly inspired by your trip and it gave me the much needed enthusiasm.

I'll be keeping off Westbengal for the most part. Will be following the Jamshedpur-Purulia-Bokaro route as I have been on that multiple times before.

              A few questions
              1. Did you have any problem carrying the SJCam with the cops?
              2. What is PUC? Is it emmision paper that you get from the petrol pumps?
              3. Whare are you from, in Bokaro?

Do a basic mapping out of your route on Google maps (it is accurate and can be relied upon). Apart from that if you get latest inputs from people of latest road conditions, even better.

                1. What documents except license, insurance, emissions certificate, do I need?
Is NOC(No Objection Certificate) required for travelling specially when crossing state borders?
Don't forget the RC! And no, you do not need any NOC
Please carry all originals in your bag but don't take them out at checks unless specifically asked for. Keep copies of the documents (attested preferably) and use these at checks. Of all the touring I've done and borders crossed, I've only been checked for documents twice, and they were fine with copies. Harassment usually happens when you ride in a group and the cops assume you are 'racing'. Solo rider's are seldom harassed.

                2. Bike is registered in Karnataka so any problem that can arise with a Karnataka number plate anywhere?
Usually no. Since you will mostly be crossing towns/cities on their border/outskirts, there shouldn't be a problem.
Just carry a bill from a petrol pump at Bangalore with your bike number and date (on the day or a day or two before you start your ride) mentioned. You can politely show them this and say that you are just crossing. All states have at-least a minimum of 30 days where you can ride a private vehicle without a noc.

                3. I am Hindi speaking so any problems can that bring?
                No.
                4. Any pointers when dealing with cops.
                Be polite
                5. Any other solo riding tips.
You might come across some idiots (motorcyclists especially) who will try to 'race' you on the highway. Just relax, slow down and let them pass.
                Questions related to the trip

                1. Can you suggest some decent and by decent I mean safe places for a pit stop and night stay.

                2. Any specific route to take
Check with google maps & feedback from other users and decide accordingly. Find out if Oyo rooms have accommodation at places you plan to stop or maybe use government tourism hotels (like Harita in AP/Telangana). I've had very good experiences at the Harita's in AP/Telangana.
                I see this route

You should be having plenty of options in Vijaywada, Vizag ..

                3. What network sim should I take? I have seen Jio and Bsnl to be good in remote locations around karnataka.
Carry a BSNL sim apart from your primary number. i.e. keep two different service providers (bsnl being on if possible). Carry a basic mobile too if possible.
                4.Maps may be?
Google maps zindabad. if you dont have a mobile phone holder, use earphones and put the phone in your pocket whenever you need route assistance. but remember to take the phone out of the holder when you park the bike!! (I've forgotten it a couple of times and was lucky to be reminded by a honest taxi driver during a stop for lunch)
You can also download offline maps such as 'Here' maps.

                5. Should I carry a DSLR camera? If yes what lens to go with it.
I have no idea. Am not a big photography guy. I use a gopro and my mobile
                Answers in bold above
Apart from these get your bike checked up and inspect oil level, brakes, cables and inspect tires for any embedded objects and fix issues if any.
Carry basic spares such as clutch & accelerator cables, a piece of electrical wire (sometimes can help with blown fuses etc..), spare fuses, basic tool kit, puncture repair kit (and learn how to fix a tubeless puncture), tire inflator (electric one such as 'resqtech' Resqtech - Worlds largest manufacturer of PORTABLE CAR WASHERS or a foot operated one)
Carry some biscuits and dry fruits on you always.
Always keep ATLEAST 2 litres of water on you always. 1 litre inside bag for emergency and 1 outside which you will use and replenish. You could also keep the water mixed with a packet of ORS i.e. electral powder (i do this, helps beat dehydration)

I have done the basic servicing and bought the necessary spare parts.

Now its just a matter of my exams to finish then I will be off.

                  P. S Your carry a recent petrol slip is something that I just wouldn't have thought on my own, thanks for that.

I have a Jharkhand driving license with Jharkhand address, now I am in Bangalore with a Karnataka registered vehicle, registered on my name with Karnataka address. So address on my Driving Licence and the address RC is different. So do I need any documentation for this?
