  • Chennai to Kanyakumari

I'm planning a chennai - kanyakumari trip tomorrow morning. May as well include rameshwaram for the trip.
My plan is chennai - trichy - madurai - kanyakumari - (rameshwaram) - madurai - trichy - chennai.
Can anyone update me on the road conditions, places to visit and places to stay (touring with wifey)
Planning to return by 31st (not compulsory though since its followed by weekend.)

            • Could some one share here a list of basic tools that ought to be carried with you for long rides? A sort of basic tool kit that would serve most of the basic repair needs during long rides until you find a proper mechanic? I ride a Hero Honda Hunk and advice specific to that bike would be even more appreciated.

The tool kit that comes with the bike should be more than handy for basic repairs. Apart from that a multi tool. Also carry spare cables(clutch & Accelerator), spark pugs.Puncture repair kit .these are the major ones that cause delay in case of repair . Learn how to change the cables and spark plug, because until and unless you know that, your tools would be as good as in the shelf .Happy riding

Well, true but not exactly. Carry all your spares and tools with you. In case of a mishap, you might find someone to assist you. And it is quite possible that he/she can be equipped in solving the issue, but may not have the requisite spares/tools. So if you carry them, your problems can be solved, even if you do-not know how to replace/fix things.

Thanks a lot for that. Seeing as I am planning to increase the range and scope of my tours in the coming months those would be valuable investments of my time. Now I realize that I must learn how to change accelerator and clutch cables, how to replace spark plug and also about using puncture repair kit to fix minor punctures. Is there any other mechanical know how I must get appraised with? Please understand that I am an absolute mechanical noob but is very much interested in learning. My only mechanical expertise was in maintaining my old Hercules To Gear cycle for which I used to most routine maintenance, :P

                    • Newbie queries for a long trip [First long trip Delhi to Patna]

                      Hi guys,

I'm planning to visit my home place at the time of Diwali and chhatth puja (guys from Bihar and UP might know about this major festive season).

I know, it's too early to post queries, but I need time to prepare myself for the trip.

My Ride would be R15. The Trip distance would be approx 1200 kms one Way.
My actual destination is Muzaffarpur, Bihar.
(However, I've written Patna in the title as many of you might not have information about Muzaffarpur but Patna is known to almost everyone as it is a capital city of Bihar.) I can figure out the route from Patna to Muzaffarpur as it is mere 80 kms and I've traveled several times on public transport on that route.

                      Things I need to know:

                      1. Tools to carry
                      2. advice on the Route from Delhi to Patna
                      3. Do's and dont's for the trip
                      4. Other basic things I might not be aware

PS: I'm already saving for riding gear (Jackets and knee guards)

                        • Pune - Goa - Bangalore

                          Hello all!
Am planning a slow solo ride on my Roadking from Pune to Bangalore via Ratnagiri and Goa. Tentative schedule is:

Sept 4: Leave at 4am for Ratnagiri via Tamhini Ghat and NH17
Sept 5: Head for Goa or continue down to Gokarna
                          Sept 6: Bangalore via Shimoga.

Might end up hanging around an extra day at Goa, Gokarna or Ankola. Would anyone have updates on the condition of the NH17 now, trustworthy petrol bunks along the way, etc?

                          Thanks,
                          Rahul

I think you must essentially carry the puncture repair kit with you always whenever you are planning to go out on long rides. A stalled bike can even be toed, but if it is punctured..and you find yourself in some remote area..you are left with no options then.

You must make sure that the bike is all set to undergo the complete ride(may be recently serviced).
and as well said by other members, carry some spares( critical and ones which you think are not being replaced from long time), so that even if you don't know how to replace you might get lucky enough and find someone who knows how to do it.

"Besides, I believe A rider on a long ride, must know atleast a little bit about the working mechanisms of his bike spares..there is nothing wrong if you don't know, but aint no harm knowing them too..and the best part is, You feel confident and face no fear taking out your old used bike and going out on any worst terrains."

                            Happy Riding.

                            • Saddlebags - Cramster or GetOffUrAss

Wow, been a looooong time since I logged into xBhp.

I am on the verge of purchasing a CBR250R and already own an RE Thunderbird. Though I have used the Cramster saddle-bags before, I am moving towards getting the GetOffUrAss saddle-bags. Does anyone have any experience using these? How good are they? Will they fit the Ceeber fine without damaging the muffler on the Ceeber. The RE will take anything so I don't mind and my tourer is going to be the Ceeber.

                              Looking forward to the feedback.
