Re: Bike O-Ring Chain - Cleaning & Lubrication
neither Diesel neither kerosene causes any issues with o-rings .Originally posted by cep View PostI will give diesel a shot, and see how that fares against kerosene. Is it known to cause any damage to the O-rings? And how do you deal with the fumes?
fumes ? after cleaning wipe the chain well with a old cotton rag and let it dry before you put the chain lube."A good long ride can clear your mind, restore your faith, and use up a lot of fuel."

Re: Bike O-Ring Chain - Cleaning & Lubrication
Why should not we lube the chain with working engine??my friends usually run the engine in idle and lube the chain[emoji27]Originally posted by theironhorse99 View Postits not that bad as of now. get a old toothbrush and some diesel. and scrub all the chain links well. then wipe it with a cotton rag and let it dry.
once done you can use SAE-90 gear oil else chain lube. repeat every 1000km and lube every 500 km. if you ride in very dusty environment then you can follow the practise more often.
note : DO NOT EVER TRY CLEANING OR LUBING OR ANYTHING ON CHAIN WITH A RUNNING ENGINE. YOU ARE WAITING FOR A DISASTER TO HAPPEN.

use a car jack under the mono shock else one side of swing arm and other side being on side stand. this is just a make shift arrangement and be very cautious.
if you tilt it a lot it might just collapse at the other side.
paddock is a hassle free setup and once in 10 year kinda buy.

Re: Bike O-Ring Chain - Cleaning & Lubrication
It's a precaution to ensure the safety of the personnel. A running engine means the user has no control over the rotation of the wheel and under certain circumstances, our instinctive/careless reactions can lead to physical damage. Even if the engine is in neutral, there is a minute possibility that the wheels could be under a little power and that is enough to cause damage. When an unpowered wheel means the sprocket teeth can crush the fingers, imagine what a powered sprocket can do. Several mechanics have lost their fingers due to this running engine style operation.Originally posted by ponbaarathi View PostWhy should not we lube the chain with working engine??my friends usually run the engine in idle and lube the chain[emoji27]

As others pointed out, it is still a risk. Request your friends not to run their engines when lubing.Originally posted by ponbaarathi View PostWhy should not we lube the chain with working engine??my friends usually run the engine in idle and lube the chain[emoji27]
I remember reading a story right here on xBhp about a rider who lost his finger when it was stuck between the sprocket and drive chain. Always turn off the engine and disengage the gear when lubing.TVS Apache RTR 180 ABS + ADV Breed + TBG Street

Re: Bike O-Ring Chain - Cleaning & Lubrication
Thanx a lot. I saw mechanics do that in a KTM SVC and I myself was about to do the same for my 1st 500km chain lubing. But, from now on never. I'll lube it in neutral only.Originally posted by yashasvi View PostNever clean or lube the chain with ignition on and bike in first gear, it's way too much risky. Re: Bike O-Ring Chain - Cleaning & Lubrication
Guys, had a question on cleaning and lubing the o-ring chain on my R15. The manual says do it every 500 kms, is that a rule of thumb or should one go by a visual inspection? I mean, if one has been riding in conditions which are not very dusty and the chain looks clean and moist after 500 kms is it ok to stretch that by 2 -300 kms?
I understand that one needs to take the bike for a spin for the chain to heat and expand so that the lube is absorbed better. Now lets say one combines washing the bike with cleaning and lubing, should the sequence be as given below?
- Allow bike to cool down
- Thorough wash, rinse and wipe down of bike
- Spray chain cleaner on chain and wait for 20 minutes for the solvent to remove gunk
- Take bike for quick spin to warm up the clean but unlubed chain?!
- Spray lube on chain
- Voila!

Re: Bike O-Ring Chain - Cleaning & Lubrication
It's not a thumb rule. Earlier I used to set Trip meter and every 500 KMS I used lube, but now I had started to lube when the chain looks dry. Also, most of the lubes run out closing to 500 KMS, Tribocor chain lube can hold little longer than others (I have personally experienced it).Originally posted by supratik View PostGuys, had a question on cleaning and lubing the o-ring chain on my R15. Do it like this:
- Allow bike to cool down
- Spray chain cleaner on chain and wait for some time for the solvent to loosen gunk
- Thorough wash, rinse and wipe down of bike
- Take bike for quick spin to warm up the clean but unlubed chain?! (Not really necessary, you can do it after performing the step 5 too!)
- Spray lube on chain
- Voila!

Good 6 point procedure you got there! However, there are a few alterations I'd suggest.Originally posted by supratik View PostGuys, had a question on cleaning and lubing the o-ring chain on my R15. 1. Never let the chain run dry. Be it 50 km (monsoon) or 500 km (highway riding).
2. IMHO, 500 km is an over-stretched figure. You'd find the need to lube it every 300-400 km at max if used daily. This is just the lubing aspect.
3. Clean the chain every alternate lubing session. Say if you lube the chain every 300 km on an average, a 600 km cleaning interval (except monsoon) would be just fine.
4. Get yourself a soft brush and keep the bike's keys in your pocket. Get 3M/Motul chain cleaner and spray it generously (1/3rd of the big can). Along with the cleaner, keep rubbing the chain with brush. All gunk would flow out. Let it settle for 10 min.
5. Give the chain a good water wash and wipe it dry with a rag.
6. Now is the time to apply chain lube (Rolon, Tribocor, Motul work well). Don't ride away immediately. It would fling off. Let it settle for some time. Best would be applying it at night and leave until morning, else a gap of 2 hours would be fine.
Monsoons require frequent cleaning and lubing. Do as per the conditions you see. I clean/lube the chain every weekend during monsoon and use grease instead of chain lube (however I have a closed chain guard as well).Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.

Re: Bike O-Ring Chain - Cleaning & Lubrication
I usually am not able to use chain cleaner periodically. But the chain is water washed (with the bike) and I lube it definitely after that because I know they use pressurized water.Originally posted by Divya Sharan View Post

Is it better to use Chain cleaner and then Lube ... than the 'ok' procedure that my bike goes through.
Also, does anyone open the front sprocket cover and clean as well as I see dirt trapped there. When I'm on the road, I'm indestructible. No one can stop me... but they try.
