Re: Bike O-Ring Chain - Cleaning & Lubrication
Haven't used WD-40 but there are many controversies going on WD-40 that is it safe for o-rings or not. So I would suggest you to better stay away.Originally posted by Saurabh213 View PostIs it safe to use wd-40 or zorrik for cleaning a non o-ring type chain ?
Regarding zorrik, I have used this spray but its not a good cleaner especially when it comes to a bike's chain though its good for other purposes.
Specifically for cleaning you can use kerosene. Its gentle on o-rings and does wonders in cleaning the chain. I am using it and am mighty impressed by the way it cleans the chain. It was difficult to source (at least in my area)and that's the only problem. On the other hand it costs way less than these chain cleaners like Motul ,etc. And does the exact same job though in a more smelly way[emoji14] .
An advise:- In case if you are using kerosene wear latex gloves as its smell is a bit strong.

Re: Bike O-Ring Chain - Cleaning & Lubrication
Just my 2 cents on chain cleaning and lubing.
been using ninja 250 for close to 6 years now , with the chain for 30000 kms. i always use diesel on the chain and then let it stay for 30 mins and clean nicely with brush and more diesel.. then use the bike for 5 odd kms so that all the diesel is thrown out of the system and the chain becomes dry and i lube it either with 3m chain lube or the wurth hhs3000 and let it stay overnight. for each of the link to absorb on the greasy material and then start using the bike the next day.
The links and the x-ring might just been working fine to last me may be another 10k kms or more.
A word of caution: i never let the service center guys lube the chain , mainly for 2 reasons ....
1. They use the chain cleaner and immediately use the lube, which if thinking practically is of no use as both have opposite properties and the service guys are least bothered about it, since they do not brush off the cleaner completely after cleaning the chain.
2. The bike once lubed is given to the users and once we start using it , all the lube is thrown out on the Tire Rim. as they have not given it enough time to rest and the quality of lube they use is either OKS or TRIBOCOR which flings a-lot. for a total waste of time and money.
Your comments folks on my thoughts..RIP Marco

Best way to clean a Motorcycle Chain
Hi XBHPians,
This thread may sound like a repeated question but I really wanted a clear answer to clean the chain.
When I searched, I found the below list but I am not sure which would be the best way.
1. Kerosene - Good but availability is difficult
2. Diesel
3. WD 40 - Controversial. Some says its good for cleaning and some says not.
4. Petrol - This is not the safe one to use I believe
5. Chain Cleaner - I prefer 3M chain cleaner as I use Chain lube from the same Manu. Some claims that chain cleaner normally contains kerosene which is filled up in aerosol bottle.
So kindly advise me which one to opt for. If there is something else than the above, please let me know.
Thanks

1 & 2 are ENOUGH. No need to worry.
THE IMPORTANT next part is to LUBRICATE the chain,
1. I personally use GEAR OIL. It's sticks with the chain pretty well. But needs proper look out in every 100km.
EASY, CHEAP, EFFECTIVE
2. HEARD (never used, will try) TVS CHAIN LUBE. It's come as a SPRAY. Available in TVS SERVICE CENTERS. Customers feed back is VERY GOOD. so can try it.
EASY, Value for money, EFFECTIVE.Last edited by KnG; 06-29-2016, 06:01 PM.

Re: Bike O-Ring Chain - Cleaning & Lubrication
You can lube the chain at every 6-700 kms. And the cleaning part can be extended to 1500kms.Originally posted by arnuld View PostGuys, what should be the chain cleaning and lubing interval if chain is covered ? I got Bajaj CT100B and I thought since it is covered, chain may attract only 10% of the dust comparing to non-covered chains.

Absolutely okay. I use WD 40 for cleaning and TVS chain lube spray without any problem.Originally posted by kanth View PostIs it okay to clean the chain with one brand and then lube it with another, as I have got Motul chain cleaner, but have 3M chain lube with me..---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you, Ravi sir and KnG, for clearing my doubts, I was more in a confusion here as to should I change the cleaner brand too, not anymore now..

Re: Bike O-Ring Chain - Cleaning & Lubrication
Using WD40 to clean the chain and then lube it for ever 500 km. By the time we complete 4000km will it not be equal to the cost of new chain-sprocket kit (non-branded) worth 1500/- ? Then why clean or my cost figures are wrong ?
I have finished 5K on my Bajaj 100B. So far I have not cleaned it for 2 reasons; 1st its under protected cover which has 8 bolts screwed into it and 2nd I dont know how the cost will come out to be.Last edited by arnuld; 12-03-2016, 05:48 PM.

Re: Bike O-Ring Chain - Cleaning & Lubrication
Taking only the cost factor while thinking about lubing the chain is simply foolish.Originally posted by arnuld View PostUsing WD40 to clean the chain and then lube it for ever 500 km. A bike with a unlubed chain will have less mileage, have more noise, the sprocket wear n tear will be more, the effort needed by the engine will be way more.
Chain is the only thing that transmits power from engine to the rear wheel and you are here saying that you haven't lubricated/cleaned the chain.. wow..
It is like thinking why wear shoes when we move with our legs..
And there are many cheap alternatives for cleaning/lubrication.. Clean the chain with Diesel and lubricate with Gear Oil. 1L Diesel costs some Rs. 55 and 1L of Gear Oil will cost some Rs. 150 and these will be enough for a long time.
Ride safe and have fun.

Nadeem
