    Hi,

Is there anyone who is using a GPS Device in India on a bike? Does it already have all the maps, or do i have to feed them in of the place i am touring, like mentioned on one of the posts above for a Mobile GPS(which for some reason i dont find very reliable while on a highway passing through a remote village)?

Would really appreciate if some one could post his experience using a GPS Navigator while on a Tour, all the prons and the cons.

    Thanks,

does tomtom rider has this functionality?

Edit : need something which can take gps locations which i can trace back on google earth software , like this -
You can use a GPS-enabled cellphone as well for the purpose. Lot's of freeware available for Geo-tagging. The waypoints can be later exported in formats supported by Google Earth and loaded on the web as well.

I am. Even THE tourer, Praveen KM is using it, albeit without maps. Both of us use a Nokia Navigator phone. For loading maps, you need to follow the steps I've mentioned in my post above. GIS in India is not much developed, but the maps are pretty reliable as a whole and give you an idea where you are and how far away from the nearest NH or locality, if not the exact directions. For example, I went to a place 90 km in the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, and while not exactly correct about the remote roads, the GPS did give a peace of mind even when travelling at night. And coming to roads accuracy, Yahoo! India maps have a better coverage than Google maps.

Yupp...shud be a breeze if you follow the pics provided by Yogesh Sarkar, or on BikeNomads Wiki site. Hardly costs a couple of hundred bucks.

Nice idea, but costly as well. Maybe a better suited product than the jugads. But afterall, it's upto you. A charger is available from Roots India for Nokia (120 bucks); add 4 X converter pins and you can charge all the cells in India.

                • First of all, of course, get the phone. I am using a Nokia 6210 Navigator.
                • Ditch the Nokia Maps software, it's useless outside the 4-5 cities that are provided there.
                • Download MGMaps and install it on your phone
                • Go to the site Mobile GMaps - Map Tile Caching tools, download and install gMapMaker on your computer.
                • Go to www.mapcacher.com and select the area whose map you require, the map type, detail level and zoom levels required. Yahoo India road maps has the best coverage. Sinlge clicks are used to mark the area boundary. Clicking on generate will ask you to save a .map file.
                • Run gMapMaker and select the option "MGMaps mode, use a .map file" and click Go. Locate the .map file in your computer and let the apllication download map tiles for a while in the output directory specified.
                • Copy the output to your phone card and start MGMaps. In Settings, go to Map Browsing and tick Stored Maps and Offline Mode. Browse to the directory where you copied the maps and save the settings. Restart application.
                • Navigate to the area whose map you just copied.
                Hi!!
this is sai and m new here.
downloading the gmaps, selected zoom level and area.
Now how do I install gMapMaker in my mobile (n78)?

You will need to install MGMaps jar file on your mobile. Download it, copy to mem card, then run it using App manager or file browser.

Any zoom level u desire. Zoom in with the site tool and you can see increased details. But more zoom = more download time = more size.
