    Navigation System

    Hi Folks,

I haven't searched much of the threads, but it would be really helpful if anyone can direct me to any information regarding GPS based navigation system to be used for motorcycles.

Some of the specifications I am looking for:
    1. Hands free control preferably through Bluetooth speaker
    2. Robust built for various terrains
    3. Can be switched to listen songs

Also, any knowledge on how a navigation system should work properly or what features should I look into , before buying one would be really helpful. Since I am newbie to this any system with a model number would really help me dig deep for specifications.

    Cheers!

You can search in any online site like Ebay or Amazon for FLY GPS/Mobile holder. U may not get the exact model or the company but any similar will do. Installation is pretty easy. Just one drawback is that the Iron Strip through which the RVM will be attached got a very small hole. So u need to drill the hole a bit wider then install it in the RVM screw. Rest installation is illustrated in the box of the holder.
The holder looks very cheap and fragile but it is actually very strong. I rode through the worst roads possible and even got bumped by another bike from behind but the mobile never came off the holder.

    Guys,

just an update that i would like to share.

i had been trying out various offline maps on my mobile [asus zenfone 5] and the only one that i really like was OsmAnd

it has highly detailed community driven maps and are regularly updated. the maps are divided statewise for added detail along with a basemap for India.

both the free and paid version have the same maps. but the free version is limited to ~10 total downloads which means that you can download content 10 times in all.

the best part is that because its community driven, updates to roads, POIs and any landmarks come within a very short period of time. the paid app is ~Rs. 350 and is a one time payment on the appstore.

Do try it out if you can.

The navigator should be covered with transparent plastic cover with ties or rubber bands. But, I prefer to remove the navigator and preserve it in a water-proof bag until the rain stopped.

The device I bought is simple to attach with the handlebar as could be seen from the photographs. First detach the two semi-circular brackets and after placing them at appropriate place on the handlebar, tighten them with the screw provided. You may use one or both the rubber strips inside the bracket - depending upon the thickness of the handlebar - to ensure firm grip. In my case, I have used both.

Nope; GPS is independent of the map. But if you want to know your location exactly on the map, yes, data connection is required (2G/3G)

Hey, you can try this out. If you have a GPS enabled Android mobile, open the Google Maps of the area where you want to go and save it for offline use. This way, even when you don't have any network, the saved Maps would be able to load and the GPS would show your location.
The network data is used to load the maps, but by saving them offline, you would be able to use them anywhere. But the mobile should be GPS enabled.

And if you are frequent at going to such places, get a proper gps device. I don't know much about them.
    Hope this helps.

    Hi Guys,

Recently I was travelling in remote areas off NH3 and got misguided, most of the times i had to travel just by guessing for 10's of kms.
i tried to get help via google maps but the cell showed no signals

now i am thinking to get a smart phone having GPS navigator (application) which can directly connect to satellite (irrespective of network) or to get a GPS Device.
