Inflating Tyres with Nitrogen

i heard from some of my friends that the vehicle does become lighter but at high speeds the road grip is not as good as the normal air that is filled..


Any one experienced this ....

Your friend is wrong otherwise MotoGP people wont use nitrogen to fill the tyres.

When we fill with pure nitrogen instead of 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen found in normal air, we actually remove that 21% oxygen from our tyre.

Advantages of Nitrogen -
1. Nitrogen molecules being bigger in size than oxygen molecules, can not easily escape through the rubber tyre. Tyre pressure is retained for 3-4 times longer periods.

2. Oxygen can now no longer attack the tyre from inside and break down rubber and rust the steel belts.

3. Water vapour in normal air can cause fluctuation in air pressure with change in operating temperature. Hence, without the water vapour, a nitrogen filled tyre can run a lot cooler and at a stable pressure. (Hence, used in racing.)

So, if you do not want to check air pressure too often and want to squeeze that extra bit of life out of your tyres, go for Nitrogen. It offers absolutely nothing in terms of ride comfort.

it needs paying 3-4 times(approx) more, well i cannot afford that only for filling nitrogen in tubes, nitrogen has its advantages, but in practical life of mine i go for checking air at digital air pumps daily at first run of bike, so donot feel need of nitrogen,although i am normal biker not a serious one

i agree with abhijeet,,, just got my tyres inflated with nitro(month back)..
here is the feedback...
-- i went to satara, bamnoli after that and since all roads were wet didn't noticed much difference..but ya on some corners, ghats to be specific,, where i use to get scared for gravel, tire held good..

-- on the ride back home, i was mostly riding streight, so again no addition no subtraction on pic up or top end,, but ya bike was pretty stable(stuck to the road) and the air pressure didn't dropped.

-- went to 2 more rides including lavasa, and did noticed a bit of difference while leaning.. on curves where normally tire use to snap, it held good,, specially on totally wet roads. i was able to lean more than fellow riders.

But again i have got the suspension hardened a bit after the bamnoli ride, so maybe that can be the reason,, but still i felt that there is a minor difference in road grip.. and its good for me,, as i keep tryong lean more . As for new guys,, if you wana go away with regular checkups..try it

first and last time i filled my cars tyres with nitrogen was 1year ago it costed me 30rs for each tyre, i was surprised to hear that the total cost was 4*30=120rs just for nitrogen. felt dissappointing at that time and never went for nitrogen instead for bike it costs 1 and slightly above litres of petrol and for diesel it is 3 litres of diesel that is worth, the main job where nitrogen could play a really huge role is for truck wallas i think

None of these points have been found to make a difference for normal road vehicles. Point 1 - not verified by a single test I know. Point 2 - Again this is more theoritical. Also, you aren't supposed to use a tyre beyond 6 years anyway. Might help only if you intend to keep your tyre for a lifetime or something. Point 3 - fill up on a dry day and u'll be perfectly fine.

Awesome gyaan coming about the benefits of nitrogen vs plain, old, large sized, wet air. Go for it guys! It's worth the 40+ Rs. Heck i would probably pay a thousand bucks for nitrogen in my tyres if that's what it cost.

@Racoon Dude, have you nothing better to do? People will believe what they want to believe no matter how much logic or how many facts you show them. If they wanna blow their money on ... well ... AIR!, then let them.

This is an awesome thread! lots of laughs. i dunno what's funnier, the theory bits about how nitro is better than oxygen or the parts about how the nitrogen INSIDE the tyres makes the vehicle stick to the road better. kinda reminds me of the 1000 buck bolt-on abs thread.
