  • [xBhp Universal Thread]: Universal Thread - Braking

Moderator Message: This is the Universal Thread for 'Braking'. Please use this to discuss anything and everything regarding the same.

I have been wondering about this topic a lot. Braking is the only thing that scares me the most while riding. One has to learn how to brake properly.

    - When to use the front break, when to use the rear? When to use both the breaks.
    - Are disk/drum better on rear breaks?
    - How would you break while turning?
    - How would you break on wet roads?

Lets discuss all of these topics here.

By my experience i ve learnt to use both brakes simultaneously, with a conditioned effort! At all times..

Pressing both brakes simultaneously is what all the vehicle manuals suggest, irrespective of disc/drum.

slow down the bike with the front brake. then gently apply the rear brake (of course, with the front brake being applied) for better stopping power. Never slam on the rear brakes. never apply rear brakes at higher speeds or while turning/cornering.

if pressing the brakes for a longer time, a small release in between helps a lot.

For more technical explanation and more tips I leave it on to the experts

well........... i would like to ask the braking experts some doubts ......
i have seen people fitting front disc brakes on their rx etc........
so why not on the rear part.........
is fitting a rear disc brake very difficult than compared to the front??

can we fit a rear disc brake on a bike like unicorn or the zma??
              if yes
              what is the procedure?
Hope is a good thing ,

while riding on the hills....what can be the braking strategy..??

suppose there is a turn ahead(kind of loop)..what one should do...either shift the gear before taking a turn or first take the tun and then shift down the gea.
What I notice is if we shift down the gear before the turn..a kind of engine braking applies and I feel that the bike might skit as the revs goes up frequently.
If we shift the gears after the turn...don't feel that good.

P.S.: In short the way to brake on hills!!
                  its all about CC...

^^Depends on your speed rohit! Keeping your speed constant, releasing throttle just a bit before entering and increasing throttle at exit, you will neither need to shift nor brake!

Believe me, the only strategy is using both brakes...the difference is how hard you use which brake, be it downhill or uphill which comes naturally with time.

Some stuff i wrote based on my experiences of riding in himachal: A Guide to Riding in the Hills - India Travel Forum, BCMTouring.com hope its useful.

thanks for sharing your views...and the link was useful.

well, Even I tried to release throttle before entering and again gaining back on the exit but it feels like the revs goings down very quickly and when you give a throttle the starts pushing from the lower end(you get what I mean...ride a bike at 30kmph at 5th gear and then give a throttle)
Soo..I'm quite not satisfied wid such kind of thing!!

Well now that rains are around the corner...

I think we all better get brakes in order...

I had one question though, the brakes on my R15 have gone soft (the break pads are wearing out )

Should i get them replaced before the rains?

To be honest I strongly dissagree with the article and strictly suggest everyone not to follow the method mentioned!!

This is not the right way to break..

                              ^^ Why? What's wrong there?
