• [xBhp Universal Thread]: How trust worthy are used motorcycle dealers?

I am saving funds for my first motorcycle. Though I did few long rides on bullet and avengers but never owned any motorcycle before. My father bought a Yamaha Libero back in 2006 when I was in school. I learnt riding on it and still ride it quite a few times.

I was looking for options I have. I saw few videos on YouTube where people blog about used automobile dealers in Karol Bagh Delhi. I noticed few dealers offering pre delivery inspection and providing stuff like 6 months warranty.

As I don't belong to Delhi but I visit there quite often. I enquired about duke 390 and yamaha r3 from a dealer called "Saraswati Motors".

He quoted me following deals..
1. 2014 KTM Duke 390 (9000 kms)- 1,19,000
2. 2017 Yamaha R3 (15 days old)- 3,05,000

Above deals are quite tempting. I was wondering if such deals should be considered or they are just trying to trade off ripped motorcycles. I read xbhp thread about used motorcycle but there is nothing stated about dealers providing warranty and stuff.

Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

@d_lonerider: January 22nd 2017 I bought used CBR REPSOL 2013 model from Karol Bagh but before that let me share an incidnt which will make buying from Karol Bagh little more clearer.

My friend had yellow NS which was sold to a Karol Bagh dealer when he bought his Himalayan. His ODO was on 55k at the time of selling and he sold it for 40k INR. Few days later he received a call from someone from another part of Delhi, who somehow got hold of Samrat's number and bought his bike. Now when he bought the bike the ODO has changed to 25k kms and he bought it for 55k INR.

Now the reason for sharing this was, digital odos too can be tampered with and you can imagine how much profit does the dealer kept for himself.

When I went to get my bike, I knew CBR tyres, front fork oil seal, brakes are the main things to check. If the bike is kept with no usage, the tyres will develop cracks, also check for engine oil leak from head, get the fairing opened, my bike's brakes were nil when I bought it, so I had one point to bargain upon. I have VIP number on my bike which as per dealer was around 10k INR, which honestly I dont care as I never wanted VIP number as 2nd owner.
My dealer quoted 1.10lc for my Repsol ABS, I bought it for 85k, and invested 3k in brakes , and few bucks in getting the front fork seal changed and oil filter changed.

It actually comes down how much you can bargain and pester him, also know the bike's cons overall, which can help you pin point places where you can depreciate the value.

For example : R3 has oil pump and other issues which if he has the bike wont have been looked into. Now 2014 Duke has run only 9k kms, that means per month only 100kms? Which is not possible even if the owner kept it for grocery shopping. Get the service record, luckily I had that which had odo reading mentioned.
Also check for basic things like, smoke, soot, engine oild residue from exhaust, cracks in alloys, evidence of falls etc

Thanks prateek2210 for your valuable suggestions and opinion. 85k for 250r ABS is a great deal. Did you check other bikes as well while considering cbr?

Well,I was eyeing only on CBR, saw an HRC color at 75k but it was sold when I went there with money, market only had my Repsol and badly maintained black 12 model, which was not my types. So had to bargain a lot for mine.

Re: How trust worthy are used motorcycle dealers?

Since the discussion is regarding reliability of used two wheeler dealers as per my experience I would say they are not at all trustworthy. This is always true in case of no voices who want to purchase a vehicle.
Besides this you are fleeced given the crap you get.
You should be seasoned enough to argue with the dealer and get a good vehicle for a good deal.
Some how I feel that the used vehicle market is a huge mafia (my personal opinion) who purchase from you at dirt cheap price and sell it very expensive.

No doubt their margin is greater than the new vehicle dealers.

Thanks
