Dude, this is an awesome effort - I will share some pictures of my toe shifter after some days. Then you can perhaps copy the design and make one of your own.

long rides : rbk's running shoes i got for around rs4000.. I got it about 3 years back and wear it to college for 6 days a week. No problems from toe shifter or anything. Very hard protection near the ankle but almost nothing near the toes (its mesh near the toes) and its not even slightly water proof.. But will last very long!
      Very value for money...
For in-and-around-area rides, i use some lotto floaters which i got some 3+ years back.. And use it 7 days a week.. Even it is holding up very good and no problem with them.

              1) Mention brand/make, model name and price you got it for.--ACME safety shoes-1000 rs.
              2) The reason behind why you wear the shoe you do.---very rough and tough, very thick leather, no problem even if you swim in water with it, iron cup in front for toe protection, anti skid, acid and oil proof sole.
              3) How long has it lasted you so far---1.5 years
              4) Any other comments/feedback.--cheapest shoes that will actually protect ur feet in an accident.

I agree. But if it rains like how it rains here in Mumbai, floaters work very well. I understadn the risk in the event of a fall, but how many pairs of shoes can one buy !
And haven't found a 100% waterproof boot yet.

Gum boots. Its cheap, ugly and smelly. At least the ones you get locally. But they are 100% waterproof...if you have to wear.

Me I got myself a boot called Texas Steer from US for rainy days. Its completely waterproof and styled like army boots. Not very comfy to walk around but damn tough. Other times, I wear whatever shoes I have depending on my mood.

                            2) Sports shoes/ sneakers/ sandals over weekends or casual occasions
                            3) 'SIDI Vertigo Rain' riding boots for weekend or other long rides
