I am using a yamaha fazer(2009model)...the bike's manual gives the engine oil specifications as:
4 stroke motor oil 20W40 type SG or 20w50
when i service the bike at the IYM(India yamaha motor) service centre i use semi synthetic oil used in R15 instead of mineral oil for my engine. i have tried the mineral oil a couple of times but found semi-synthetic much better.
i usually buy the oil from the service center which is yamalube.
i would like to know if i can use any other suitable oil which will enhance the bike performance, reduce vibes, etc.sigpic

what you are using is yamalube 15w50.. Which is quite a good oil but is a little costly than its couterparts like shell ax7 ss which is 326 rs and a good ss oil. If you dont want to use yamalube.. Motul 5100 is an equivalent.
The best oil for yamaha fazer is motul 300v (any bike grade) followed by shell oil.. Followed by gulf.

Anyone helping me out on this???Originally posted by catchdoon View PostHi All,
I have been trying to spot the Shell Lubricant dealers / Shops so that I can get my Engine Oil changed. But So far no one in Navi Mumbai and Mulund area seems to deal with Shell. Anyone out here from Mumbai can help me with the same pls.
Also I wish to know that in a Geographical regions such as Mumbai is it advisable to use 10W-40? or should I just keep continuing with 20W-40, when the recommended oil is 20w-40? Also would it be preferable to choose Fully synthetic oil over Semi-Synthetic in a debatable way? Which one is better and why?
Also can someone having enough experiences with different oil types let me know the TOP THREE:
1. Semi-Synthetic Oils
a)
b)
c)
2. Fully Synthetic Oils
a)
b)
c)
Thanks a lot in advance

How much do you travel in a month. I prefer u stick to using yamalube ss 15w50, its good for city/highway and lasts regular service interval of 3 month or about 3-4k km. Plus if ur bike is under warranty don't use other oil. If not , Other than this you can change over to motul 300v but it's twice as costly.Originally posted by raj0690 View PostI am using a yamaha fazer(2009model)...the bike's manual gives the engine oil specifications as:

Shell and certail other cheaper ss/fs oils are actually further processed mineral oils and they are not actually fully synthetic oil like motul 300v and don't last as long and durable as motul. With preference I choose motul or yamalube only.

well FS/SS/Mineral war is still on and will be debatable, always.Originally posted by catchdoon View PostAnyone helping me out on this???
Here's short pros & cons of each type for you
FS Pros:
- lasts long (easily upto 4k kms)
- great cleaning properties
- best tolerance to heat & other degrading factors (breakdown starts at 160' C)
- best performance
Cons:
- costly
- longer lasting means longer change interval; because of this some experts say, old & partially degraded oil stays inside engine. Hence not good.
- users have reported, these oils evaporate sooner than any other kind.
Mineral pros:
- cheapest in its kind.
- frequent oil change interval (max 2000kms) [this will keep engine clean]
- ok performance (great value for money for what it provides)
Cons:
- can not withstand high heat & other degrading factors (breakdown starts at 150' C)
- only 'ok' kind of cleaning properties in oil itself. (that's why engine cleanliness depends on oil changes)
about SS:
- something between mineral & FS
- better performance than mineral
- change interval similar to mineral or in some cases lower than mineral
- mid way pricing
- better cleaning properties than mineral
note: figures i have given are baseline standard.
EDIT: about your 10w40 or 20w40.. I'd say go for 20w40 because Mumbai won't be suffering sub 0 degree temperature (where 20wxx is rated for min temps) so you are safe with 20w40 but there's no ss or fs in that range.
About 10w40, its minimum rated for -15 degree i think, which will never happen. So no need.
But these kind of oils are available in fs so if you wanna go fs way then no problem.
'But'
if you wanna go with mineral or ss in 10w40 then dont (my opinion) because they have too much of polymers/VII'S due to which they will break down quicker than 20w40. But again there are experts who will bet for 10w40 even in mineral or ss type of oil reason being, it will flow faster & obviously starts protecting sooner than 20w40. (time period is so small that it can be neglected i.e. its in micro-seconds* aging my opinion) but the limitation is you need to change these oils sooner say 1500kms.
The take is yours.
.
In short; what oil is not (so) important, what's (more) important is change interval.Last edited by Honda_CBF; 06-10-2012, 04:17 PM.

but there's no SS 20w40 in shell/motul/elfOriginally posted by catchdoon View PostQuite nice. Ok then, I wanna change from Catrol Activ 20w40 SS to a better SS oil in the same grade. Which one shall you suggest?
Shell / Motul / ELF?
shell has got 10w40; i.e. Ax7
motul has 15w50; i.e. 1500
and i dont know about elf's ss offering.
Close to 20w40 is 15w40 i.e. Castrol power1
Actually, there's no ss oil in 20w40
btw, mineral oils from motul (3000 4t plus)
yamlube (20w40)
valvoline (champ 4t plus)
gulf (pride 4t) are also great (comparable to few ss oil in performance) and are available in 20w40.
Try any of them you'll feel the difference for sure & also all above oils are way better than castrol activ. (these oils are also little cheaper than most ss oils)
first of all, dont call me sir. As all bikers are brothers, i supposeOriginally posted by vinay1552 View PostNo sir till right now no problem . second, you are doing more than enough. You can defiantly use the oil for 1700-1800 kms.
Btw, prajnyan's advice is also good. With that oil you can easily go upto 2000km between change intervals but as with any thicker oil your bike will rev slow until the oil becomes hot.Last edited by Honda_CBF; 06-10-2012, 09:37 PM.

I know bro, but don't know why in Mumbai it's so hard to find Shell Advance AX 7 SSOriginally posted by Honda_CBF View Postbut there's no SS 20w40 in shell/motul/elf

(Some dealer issue they tell), so finally changed my oil to Castrol Power 1 15w-40 SS (Hope to get better results). back there I had a look at Motul 5100 SS and Motul 300V FS with the grade 15w-50 and Castrol Power Racing 10W-50 FS - Now I was stuck with the issue that XXw rating is fine no issue, but since my bike is recommended with XXw-40 so I should not play with upper limit with oil change which thereby I ended up with the mentioned oil. I know the other oils that you have suggested but really wanted to dis-continue Mineral Oil and switch to SS. Lets see how this one fares. Will keep the results posted.
