dont go too low in winter grade bro, unless its FS oil. Reason being there will be too much of VII's. Even a 10w40 ss oil won't last more than 1500-1800kms.Originally posted by murlidhar View Postany SS alternatives in 5w40 ?
honestly i find fs too costly
I guess 5w40 ss oil will need changing in less than 1k kms..

but piaggio recommends the above said grade for its vespa range of scooters!Originally posted by Honda_CBF View Postdont go too low in winter grade bro, unless its FS oil. Reason being there will be too much of VII's. Even a 10w40 ss oil won't last more than 1500-1800kms.

well then i don't have any alternative other than fs.
sometimes i wonder if the Italian engine really needs 5w in Indian climatic conditions...
don't have much knowledge in engine oils theory
so just want to stick to the grade the company recommending to me!

if its recommended then you can get the recommended oil from svc, right? Me too thinks 10w40 can be used safely in Indian conditions.Originally posted by murlidhar View Postbut piaggio recommends the above said grade for its vespa range of scooters!

The same companies market 5wxx and 0wxx oils when they are operating in climates that need that .Originally posted by madhav krishna View PostAFAIK there are no SS oil available in 5W40 grade in india.

The manual was probably just translated from Italian, verbatim
. Seriously , they should be recommending a range of oil grades there according to the bikes usage conditions and climates . You can safely use any 10w40 SS or FS oil in it , no problem .
Would love to see some pics of your vespa please

oh.. Costly to own & costly to maintain scooter. I'm having a strong feeling that company can fulfill scoot's oil needs. Afterall thats the most needed thing in terms of maintenance.Originally posted by murlidhar View Postit recommends fs oil too.
If I was you, I would have done oil changes (if needed apart from regular services) with 10w40 or 10w30 ss oils.
P.S.There's also a 10w30 FS oil from gulf at around 300 rupees.

Why u require 5w? U live in Leh or what?Originally posted by murlidhar View Postany SS alternatives in 5w40 ?

Search for 10w-40 or 15w-40!
ELf and Gulf apart from Motul are like the best buys if you r also a not big fan of Castrol

Try 10w-40 or 15w-40. In Indian Conditions both wouldn't harm your engines!

this is my first four stroker. the last one i rode is mahindra flyte owned by my uncle. i still ride it. but this vehicle ( piaggio vespa) is my own and waited for it for the last two years to get it launched in India.Originally posted by catchdoon View PostTry 10w-40 or 15w-40. the service centre guy says my warranty would be voided if i used any other grade!
i just hope 5w40 will not degrade the engine life. yet to get it serviced. still 400 on the odo. trying not to use it for more than 10 kms at a time. don't want the engine to get overheated.
does 5w follow the required viscosity index of 10w too at high temperatures ?

well ding ding
i just rang up the manager of the service station and confirmed that the grade is 15w40 and not 5w40 !
hehe. the other guy at service center said it was 5w40.
the manager said the Italian company has asked to replace it with 15w40 only.
phews! was worried that my engine was taking a beating in this Hyderabadi heat.
guess then will look for gulf or elf fs oils for my Evangeline
