  • Till 5000 kms you should drain a engine oil according to user manual says. Because engine is brand new it requires better care. For example your user manual says that first service should be done in 500kms or 30 days whichever come first. Like this every service has a specified time. According to my knowledge honda provides 3 free services on unicorn So you get your bike service done according to user manual . once you comeplete 5000 kms . You change your engine oil in 2000 kms or in 3 months whichever come first. Do read your bike manaul and you better know . Any more doubt I am happy to help you.

they mention 10k because they tested it under 'optimal' conditions as the engineers at gulf say or may be 'oil friendly' conditions. Like, cool temperatures, no stop-go running instead easy cruising, good engine condition/tuning, and what not. Its even possible that the test bike/vehicle was not with integrated transmission.. . Btw, do you know mobil has tested its FS oil for 1000000 miles on a Merc?

If you run your bike regularly, change it at 3k kms (for yamalube)

If you run your bike once in a blue moon, make sure you change it around 2.5-3 months time.

          Cheerz!!

As HONDA_CBF pointed out, different companies have different marketing tactics. It won't necessarily ruin your engine in and of itself. Tell me the difference between Tata Water Plus, Himalaya and Bisleri? Some even say they have minerals, antioxidants bullc***p etc, but do you get any superhuman abilities by either of these three? You're thirsty, you head to a shop, you get a bottle, no matter what, drink and your thirst is quenched.

This is the same way an oil goes, it does have a certain life for certain conditions and once it's almost squeezed of it's juice, your engine reminds you loud and clear.

Yamalube 20w40 SL if I am not mistaken is a Mineral oil. I've always loved Yamalube SS, personally . They lasted for over 5k+k KMS on my Victor and it was still butter smooth till my engine rework. But I've switched to numerous oils after that, and found Shell, Agip to be on the bargain performance lot.

Are you sure it was 1000000 :O :O :O or is it 100000 KMS?

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
            The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

            • I happened to see a 3 year old ZMA at the mechanic shop and it was evident that proper oil change was not done by the amount of sludge, and dark deposit inside the Clutch area....Clutch plates were replaced and then it was found that the oil was not reaching with pressure to the top head...obviously the oil galleys have been blocked by the sludge...The owner did not want to open the head and clear the fault,as he was planning to sell the bike, blaming the bike for poor performance...

No body lost an engine by doing short or timely oil change...but those who didn't surely did.

                    • Hi All,

Am new to Engine Oils, kindly pardon my ignorance. I have run 3500 kms on my Duke 200 and am planning to switch to Motul 20w50. Is 1 Litre enough for replacing the oil or should i purchase more. Am planning to give it to my local mechanic for oil change.

                      TIA

1.4 ltrs is reqired. So you buy 2 cans, use 1.4 ltrs now, and buy 1 more at time of next service.

The Duke's designed capacity is 1.5L but indeed unless the engine is overhauled, you can use 1.3 to 1.4L depending on the availability. You can go ahead and use the 20w50. It's obvious that you need two cans, as I myself always stack one extra for my 220, just in case you would find it come in handy for top ups or even for the next oil change you can just buy just one can, and use the remaining, it's all pretty basic.

                          Cheers!
