And second thing, pulsar dont likes thin oils.. So if you wanna use SS then try out motul 5100 15w50

Thanks for the reply, but if i don't want to go for SS then which should i go for or should i stick to Fully Synthetic Shell Oil again.
Also suggest any other oil, that you feel or you have experienced is better..

    • Engine oil for Thunderbird

      Hi all,

I'm using MOTUL 5100 15W50 Semi-Synth. oil for my Thunderbird from past one year without any problem.

Just a month ago I saw an advt. saying that Shell India has introduced new engine oils for bikes. My query is > Is it worth changing to Shell oil from Motul? Which is the semi-synth oil available in 15W50 grade?

I've not used any FS oil so can't suggest you any thing and whatever I'm telling is theoretical, and also dont revert back to mineral or semi-synth if you have used FS for more than 10k.

I wont agree with it. Been using the AGIP FS for some 10,XXX kms. Then reverted back to yamalube & later gulf pride 4t. No probs faced yet.
NOT BEEN THERE NOT DONE THAT

          • ^^ technically one should not revert back.. Because engine gets used to it if used for long (6500 miles). If done then engine won't be able to cope with the degradation in lubrication.
Again, whatever I've said is theoretical
            @ madhav Krishna,
if you ain't having any problem then its really a good news.

              Heard something to that effect.
Been using FS for more than 10k now. Change my clutch plates about a month back from ASS. ASS does not keep FS, so had to use HH oil. Was planning to change as soon as I comeback home as I keep FS spare bottles, but decided to use the HH oil for sometime. Still using HH oil as I write. My bike with HH oil behaves the same way as it used to, so there is no problem to speak of. Will soon fill FS again as the HH oil is loosing its smoothness.

Shell SS is available only in 10W40. It's value for money at around 300 bucks compared to Motul. More or less it feels same like Motul 5100.

                  motul: price: 450/l
                  shell: price: 280/l
Thanks for the suggestion. I think I will go ahead with Shell Advance vsx 4t. Will need to check its availability here in my city though. Can you tell me how many kms does it last and more about how the bike performs with it ? Does it result in smoother ride and gear shifts ?

bro its name has been changed to shell advance ax7 so dont get confused.
after using this oil my bike is so smooth and gear shift is too good however gear was smoother when i was on gulf pride 4t plus. vibration gone to some extent and bike now revs more freely and engine runs cooler.
this oil lasted for 1100kms as 850kms was spent on touring @ 100kmph+ most of the time however im expecting 2.5k to 3k kms on it.
                    go for it.

                      • Guys I have a peculiar problem with the engine oil ... I have been using Agip FS for the past 10K kms ... My first fill was done by the SVC , so I do not have the bottle with me , the next two have been done my me , so I do have the bottle's ... So here goes ,

My first fill up at 5.5K kms lasted me about 5K kms and I changed at 10.5K kms ... This time the drain interval was about 4K kms at ODO 14.5k kms ( involved some really hard riding here ) ... But now Odo is reading 16.5k kms and the oil has reached it's minimum level mark and is really BLACK ... Now the last time I changed also the oil had reached the minimum mark but still it managed to fill up the entire bottle to the level which the new oil came to ... Now the confusing thing is Do i change it or leave it ??? Another confusing issue , the same oil with the same price from the same place has two different grades , the older one was 5w40 , the new one is 20w50 ... attaching a pic . The one on the left is the new one and the one on the right is the old one ..
People ask me , why are you cribbing about the BHP ? to them I say "MORE is never ENOUGH" xbhp.com

                        • Oil will go black even after 1k of use.. No problem in it. It means oil is working good.. Cleaning the engine. But how the level dropped to min mark? Is it leaking from some were? And what's the issue of pricing with different grades?? There can be other variables for identical pricing may be marketing strategy

When did you checked oil level? After a ride or after keeping the bike in middle stand for some minutes?

You checked spark plug?Hows it looking?

No leaks ... I doubt it's marketing strategy , I didn't find an issue with the pricing , the issue was the grades , both were supposedly FS but one is marked special synthetic ( 5w40 ) and one is Full Synthetic ( 20w50 )

I checked on a warm engine ( i.e after idling for a few minutes ) on center stand .

What bike did you use this oil in ? How come you using 5w40 oil on it .. is it the manufacturer recommended grade for your bike at your ambient temperatures ? Are you track racing the bike ?
5w40 is thin oil preferred type by track-racers nowadays for quick revving their engines at the cost of wear . They don't mind as they rebuild their engines at the end of every race anyway . Being a thin oil it is normal for some of it to slip past the rings and vanish . Your use of this thin grade in our climates for normal road riding have caused accelerated wear . So naturally it's vanishing faster now and also getting dirty earlier owing to increased blow-by past the rings .
