I've shortlisted a few - Bell qualifier, HJC FG-17and MT KRE. I am not able to find the 1st 2 anywhere online, if you guys could help with that, i'd be amazing. Also if i can find these in any store in Delhi/gurgaon that would be better, as trying on the lid before buying would be much better.

    • Riding Gears for First Time Tourer

      Hi Guys!
I have planned to visit Sikkim during October with my RC390. Being a first time tourer on a budget, I require several gears for the ride. I use MT Axxis Evo Helmet. Got a pair of Probiker gloves worth Rs. 200 which are holding up well inspite of being 5 years old. Given the terrain and the weather, please suggest the cheap and best option for the following:

Saddle Bag - ViaTerra Claw Mini - Will this, along with a backpack, be enough for holding everything I need during the trip?

Jacket - I sweat a lot. I require decent amount of protection along with rain and thermal liner. Looking at Scimitar Solus and Aspida Atlas. Need to definitely try out the size before ordering.

Pants - No idea about this

      Shoes - Army Boots

Tyres - Stock Metzelers can handle the mud and slush? Any alternatives?

      Gloves - Need Suggestions

      Thanks in advance!

          Saddle bag -
Dude! Only you know how much stuffs youre carrying and in how much space you can fit it. Second way is you carry only important and limited stuffs that can fit in your saddle and backpack. My advice, keep only handy stuff in backpack while keeping it light on weight. Else you'll shoulders and back will start to pain soon. Also if youre going in rainy season. Keep your stuff in polythene and then cover backpack with polythene.

Jacket - You sweat a lot and summers are killer in India. Get a jacket that has mesh in front and back. I always love my Cramster Breezer for this (mesh, light weight, protection, rain liner, thermal liner, good price).
If the jacket you doesn't come with thermal liner, wear something inside to keep you warm. For rain liner, A raincoat - windcheater is the best thing you can get.

Jackets rain liner would be inside jacket - means your jacket will be soaked in water, will get cold and heavy too. Whereas a raincoat on jacket will help you stay dry for around 70% parts. Pick a good one and it will serve you for good 4-5 years.

Pants - Try any according to your budget if you're looking for riding pants. For me, a jeans worked all long years.

Shoes - Army boots are good. Get the one that is lightweight, have steel or hard toe (if you can find) and has a stitched sole (always better than the glued one's)

          Tyre -
Nope! Metzeler can make your touring very very hard and even put you in situation where the bike wont move. It will be oike a bald plain rubber in mud. Get MRF or Ceat for such touring.

Gloves - Go pick the Cramster TRG2 or other similar and you'll be happier.
Basically, any full gauntlet gloves is best for touring.

Since you're a first time tourer.
          1. I guess Sikkim will be wet in october, carry extra big size polythenes for covering your saddle and backpack. (The ones you ger in big bazaar and other malls are too strong and perfect)

          2. Carry few small size polythene for your mobile and papers.

          3. Carry your ProBiker gloves with you. When under heavy rain you can use them because leather gloves are not water friendly and once they are soaked in water they take hell of time to dry.

          4. Always put equal weight on both side on saddle bag to maintain balance. Learn to tie saddlebag properly.

          5. Keep track of KTM svc that fall under your route.

          6. Keep few necessary tools / fullkit with you. Specially the one that can open front mud guard if mud get stuck because of very less spacing.

Good luck on your first tour.

Also, you may go for a general bag, just pack your stuff in trash bags first, then in the bag, and cover it with polysheets, tie it down using bungee cords. Balance the weight on both the sides, fix it so it may not slid helter and skelter.

Jacket - Would like you to check Solace Sprint or Rynox Tornado pro. Both come with CE level 1 armour and a 1680D cordura on impact zones providing great protection. Buy a duckback or Quechua raincoat to wear outside the jacket since no jacket is 100% waterproof. Rynox Tornado pro costs 7450, comes with Knox flexiform armours. Solace Sprint costs 5800, armours are good quality. Both these are mesh jackets, keeping you cool while on the go.

Pants - Good old jeans are fine just wear some knee protection, can buy those steel kneeguards or the ones from Scoyco, the k11 knee and elbow guards. You may also have a look at Solace Vajra. These are cheap yet great options. Riding pants would cost a good bit, try getting them from Cramster/Rynox/Solace if you want.

Shoes - Go with boots with steeltoe and sole which has been stitched down. You may look at Orazo boots or even army boots with steel toes.

Tyres - Metzelers are a big no. Purchase some offroading tyres from Ceat/MRF. Ceat offers great warranty on its tyres. MRF is an all rounder.

Gloves - Keep your old gloves in case of a rain, since leather is not so protective. Go from full Gauntlet gloves like Aspida Ares/Cramster TRG2/Solace RacePro.

You can PM me for a small list of itineraries or things to carry.
              Goodluck !!

              Thanks in advance!

Thanks a lot Sird and Parth, specially for explaining the disadvantages of rain liner and other things. Can you please explain the differences or best of the lot among Scimitar Razor, Scimitar Solus, Aspida Atlas and Cramster Breezer 4S?
Parth can you please send the list? Am PMing you for the same.
More questions might follow, please bear with me, riders!

Scimitar products carry no warranty whatsoever. Aspida Atlas is good, Cramster Breezer 4s is better on paper, although people talk of quality issues with cramster products. I would like some users to comment on these better. I still suggest Solace Sprint or Rynox Air GT.
And yes will send u the list. PM.

I Really Cannot tell you about where to purchase these helmets in india but there are some sweet deals at revzilla and similar sites and amazon.com has a joe rocket for a 100 bucks or less with free shipping to india. Revzilla also has a FG-17 for a 100 bucks but it would only help if you have a friend in america otherwise you might end up paying 55$ shipping. However a site called burnoutitaly.in too has a sale going on and hjc is retailing at a 11000 bucks. Hope this helps

That burnoutitaly website does not look that good. I had checked couple of weeks back, just went upto payment page and it shows a different amount as charge to credit card than the sale amount. So take you call with this website.
