What I am guessing is that the 14% duty will be applicable for non-commercial imports and 35% for commercial imports. Usually the commercial imports will have a much higher shipment value and/or larger numbers. Non-commercial items will usually not be so (unless u want to import 100 jackets for "personal" use!)Originally posted by ananth View Post

Do you mean 'marked as Gift'?Originally posted by ananth View PostWill this 14% or 35% import duty apply even if my friend / cousin ships me marking the stuff as "PERSONAL" from US?
In that case, there are various possibilties:
The parcel reaches you without any duties charged as the postmaster is in a great mood.
The postmaster holds back your package till you follow it up with the shipping etc, go to the post office and have the package released paying or not paying the duty.
If its apparel, just have it shipped with the invoice, see if you can get the invoice undervalued to save duty.CBR 954 RR

Thanks manson... yes! I meant "marking it as a gift" Since its just one jacket - i thought i might escape the 14 / 35 % duty marking it soOriginally posted by manson View PostDo you mean 'marked as Gift'?

My analogy would be that regardless if an item is used or secondhand, it is still considered as an import of an item so therefore, duty will be charged. This is espsecially so when the item is shipped.Originally posted by winzeee View PostCan one mark an item(anything) as "used" or "secondhand"?.
Cheers W
Marking it as "used" (of even if it looks like used) is useful if u r bringing it with you and they happen to spot it while screening the luggage. That might exempt you from duties. But most of them dont have the time to search thru everyone's luggage due to the sheer volume and the paucity of personnel.

hey manson,i second you on tht opinion of urs,i mean wts the point of promoting safety when you are not making the members of the forum aware of the necessary safety standards for the riding gear they would be using in the real world ... the non branded ones or chinese ones and the ones without the safety ratings may be cheap and very very attractive and may look expensive, with superb finishing but thts no substitute for safety on the roads.simple as tht! but again to everyone their own!Originally posted by manson View PostThe opinions come from first hand experiences. I would not post an opinion against, or supporting any riding gear otherwise. I do not have any vested interests in Riding Gear, which would normally imply the reviews/comments/opinions are unbiased.
Some are slightly better informed than the others. Whats the harm in sharing knowledge and first hand experiences? I thought that was the real reason forums came into existence.
That was a first and the post was relevant to the helmets thread, however if you and the support think otherwise you could delete every singly one of my posts.
Nor do I, the best stuff available globally is manafactured in China. But its the standards the helmets should meet, but these alongwith STM, BHP, YOHE, etc do not. Isn't the safety of its members topmost priority for the forum, why would shedding light on the same be hampering anything at all.
The posts were a sincere effort to protect the best interests of the members of the forum, and its quite surprising to have the support team come down on me for it.
I would request the support team to click in the link provided in the following post:

Wrong. If it doesn't have a bill, they will ask you for a bill and trouble you. None of the vendors will tag as sample piece. If its a friend then that could be done.
I just received a leather jacket from the US. My friend bought it and sent it and I wasn't charged any duty. The "from" name was my friends (Indian), so that would be the reason.
When under valuing, you need to be careful that you don't make it very obvious. If they decide to charge you a certain amount of duty, you will not be able to argue.
If you are ordering a part for your own bike that costs 5k or below, you are exempted of duty. You have to show them your RC book with your name there.Last edited by Bladerunner; 10-16-2008, 09:53 PM.

Buying a good jacket in India
Hi everyone,
I am looking to buy a good jacket that has the following features
1. protection (shoulders , elbows etc
- the better the protection , the errr better
2. waterproof - as in it should replace my trusty raincoat
3. warm inner lining - should keep me warm on those chilly winter morning rides if I miss my office bus
4. affordable - something for a maximum of 6000 bucks is what I am looking at.
As per my knowledge, PlanetDSG, Cramster & AngelsRacing are the 3 sites that list these type of jackets. DSG has the black Nero, Spike Jacket Red & Yellow(Textile Jackets & Pants) . Cramster has the Meteor (Cramster: India's first premium bike luggage (saddlebags tankbags) and riding gear (Jackets Gloves)) . None of the AngelsRacing products are waterproof, so they get the heave-ho.
Could owners of the above jackets, share their experiences with their purchases. Are they usable for day-to-dear wear & how waterproof are they ? Is it easy to lug them around once you reach office ? Were you delivered the product on time ? Ive got a million & one other questions so could owners of these / other riding gear share their experiences.
