      • Hands-On: Borderlands
        Developer: Gearbox Software
        Publisher: 2K Games

        Synopsis:
Borderlands is set in an dystopic future in a place called the Pandora. Where a team of four people search for a treasure called "The Vault", which seemingly has wealth, alien wizardry and many more. You get to choose among four characters each specializing in a field of combat. It's a open-world environment, where you are free to choose your missions. And to get to "The Vault"..................well you need to blow some heavy shit up. What makes this game most entertaining of all is the way the game is presented, there is sarcasm and black humor everywhere, from the dialogues to the opponents last plea for mercy at your hands. The game is sure to put a sly smile on your face.

        Graphics/Presentation:
The graphics are heavily inspired by graphic drawings with heavy outlines and strong pencil strokes. These cell-based animations are pretty cool giving a comic-book effect to the whole experience, also gives higher quality than in normal animations where sometimes the shapes sort of split up and look like they are hollow polygonal pieces put together. The view is totally desolate making you feel stranded except for a few strange characters telling you what to do, this kind of feels spooky-good. The whole game has a sort of Mad-Max theme to it, where you scavenge anything you can find to survive, and the graphics really help conveying that feeling. The menus are very minimal and look arcadey with bright colors and bold lettering.

        Gameplay:
There's not much to it, you just point and shoot at anything you don't like and hear your character voicing out his /her relish in doing so. Till now i've found it easier tackling human AI rather than the creatures. The human is a range opponent trying to take you out from a distance, and has fairly higher AI, the AI's try to find cover after unloading a clip, which gives us some time between reloading or taking cover to find a strategic point to scope the opponents. But the creatures are a damn pain because these things are melee AI and they just run/fly at you from all sides and attack at a point blank range, so there is very little time to focus on any one creature, and kill without incurring some damage. But that is meant in a good way.

        EDIT:
Next Hands-On; Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising

        • here's how i'd rate flashpoint:

graphics- 7/10. the environs and characters look pretty detailed, but the smoke effects look retarded. and i dont see a lot of anisotropic filtering either. looks more like a 2007/2008 game at best

gameplay: 7 again. long walking distances, tend to get pretty bored after clearing the odd enemy bunker and the checkpost. Vehicle physics really s*ck. vehicle physics are nowhere as good as far cry 2 or crysis.

i cant get over my Nordschleife addiction as yet, so i still find rFactor more interesting than Flashpoint.
El Loco's review could change that

          my pc: AMD 5200+, 4GB transcend, EVGA 8800GTS G92, 17" CRT

Well it is a pretty small game in terms of size, only about 5.05 gb for the installed game, you can't expect the same quality as Crysis that was nearly what? about 11gig? I played it for a few minutes, and was pretty impressed by the command-giving feature as normally you get orders barked at you by some AI, also i thought the medic feature was also pretty neat, but i need to sit a good four-five hours with the game to actually say anything else about the it.

EDIT: And oh my current rig is C2Q [email protected] GHz; 4gb DDR2; PowerColor HD4870 1gb; 20" HDMI LCD, if i haven't said posted this a million times already

              • yeah, despite a few not-so-good things, Flashpoint is certaiinly one of the better games we've seen in the last 2 years.

btw, what games is everyone badly wanting to play?
                my list: Dirt2, Bioshock2, Assasin's creed 2 for now

GTA4 is quite different from San Andreas. GTASA had a better Fun quotient than GTA4...they've made 4 a bit more serious and story oriented than most previous GTAs. you'd be a lil disappointed with gta4 if you're looking to repeat the san andreas experience.
IIC those two episodes are only for the X360 version of the game. the PC version is very poorly optimised, so dont even think of playing it if you dont have minimum: 4gb ram, mid-high end GPU and a nice quad core.

@abhichotu: try updating your GPU drivers and directx version, and if you're using Vista or windows 7 try running the game in compatibility mode. (right click on the game exe, compatibility>choose windows XP or 2000.)
