  • ^ Not surprising at all. An 8800 is 3 years old, plus yours is a 8800 M GTX (mobile) which means half the power of the desktop 8800 GTX. Now if one were to use a 4870X2/58XX or maybe GTX 285/GTX 4XX then one could easily play in ultra settings. But GTA IV is a bad console port and hence not optimized for PC. Sort of like Crysis which is really tough to max out.

        • N00b Alert!!

Bear with me on this one, but does a x64 OS actually enhance the quality of gameplay? Or is it just all in my head? Because I swore GTA IV ran better on my friends x64 W7 than the x86 running in mine, both of us are running the same 1gig Gpx card and both have 4gig RAM and the same CPU so hardware discrepancy is not possible, Anyone??

          • Your 32-bit OS will not utilize the full 4 GB of RAM. Google this for an explanation: 32 bit memory limit.

Perhaps the extra 1 GB RAM helps the game or perhaps it is coded better/optimized for x64.

GTA IV is a system hog and, frankly, a really clumsy console port.

Care to elaborate this statement? GTA IV looks the best on a PC if you ask me, yeah it comes with a host of bugs like missing textures, vRAM overload, and ten other things I can't even explain, but it can hardly be called a "console port"! I built my rig to play this game and I'm not regretting it. And BTW thanks with the query

              • Ok. The game was initially released for the Xbox 360 and PS3. A PC version came far later. Now, the PC version is a port of the Xbox 360 version but it is somewhat optimized for the PC.

Any game looks best on a PC as the power available in a PC is multiple times that of a X360. For instance, the X360 uses a custom ATI gfx chip called Xenos. Search for its specifications and performance. It is somewhat equivalent to a Radeon X1900 from years back.

A game that runs smoothly on relatively pedestrian hardware (X360) , but has problems running on today's 4-Core/4-gig-ram/latest gfx cards has to have some problem right? That is the problem of the port.

People have real trouble maxing out the game at high res. Plus the problems mentioned by you. All this is what adds up to the clumsy port I mentioned.

                • Fair Enough

Well no arguments there, I didn't know the little tit-bit about the game initially being designed for the consoles, I knew this game was a long overdue to hit the PC's, coming to think of it that does make sense as to why they had to have a patch later on adding Anti Aliasing and Anisotropic filtering for the PC game. But somehow I always felt the games potential was only on PC's, therefore my previous assumption.

                        • Hey guys.. can some one help me out?

I'm upgrading the audio in my PC, am going in for an ASUS Xonar Essence STX card with a Logitech Z 5500 speaker system to replace my old (6 years) creative 2.1 speakers running on mobo audio.

I will be using this setup for gaming, movies, music (in that order of preference). I can get the card for some 8,000 bucks and the speakers for 17-18,000 here.

If you guys can suggest a better combo in this price range (25k) for my needs, I'd really appreciate it. If this combo is good enough I'll go for it as soon as possible..

                          thanks!

The Logitech 5500D is one mean speaker system. You can also consider the Fatality Series from Creative!!

U wont be fixing the gfx card to the processor by any means, even feviquick

What's ur motherboard? Does it have two PCi express slots? (Two because my 9800 GTX covers the space of two PCi slots though it sits in one)
