  • ^ The DDR5 ram is only for the GPU. System ram is currently at DDR3 only.

Since the DDR5 is on the gpu, any current processor will support it as the type of ram on the gpu does not matter.

A comparable setup for AMD is:

    Proc: AMD Phenom II X4 965 or Phenom II X6 1055T (hex-core)
Board: Any 790GX/890GX chipset based board

Remaining components stay the same. The potential difference between this and the Intel setup can be 1-2K.

You can add another SMPS. But it will be hanging outside your cabinet and there will be wires all over the place making it a real messy affair. Far better to get a single psu.

    A 5850 is much more powerful than a 4850.

      • Core Issues

A quickie, all these multi-core processors the clock speed quoted, are they cumulative of the speeds of all the cores combined or does each one work at a figure say 2.66Ghz? Because I heard my friend saying it's the latter and it really didn't make sense, also these "cores" are they processors by themselves?
I'm too intelligent to the unintended, and too dumb for the obvious.

Not entirely sure, but I think each (non-HT) core runs at the quoted clock speed. Is there separate clock for each core? I dont know, maybe someone more acquainted with processor arch can shed some light.

PSU is a critical component of the PC. Opt for reputed brands only to be on a safer side.

yes all the cores are clocked at 2.66Gigs separately and not the cumulative speed for e.g. in a core 2 duo processor if the clock speed is 2.4 Ghz it means that the cumulative speed is 4.8GHz but since one job can be sent to just one processor so effectively for a single task you are using 2.4gigs but the multi core processors are very good for multi tasking,,,,

                          • It would be better if he goes for a smaller monitor and use the saved amount on an Ati 5670 for 5250/-. It's faster, has less power consumption and DX11 support.

                              You want to game, eh?

                              CPU : AMD Athlon II X2 250 : 3200/-
Board: Some 785G chipset based board, should be cheap enough : 5000/-
                              RAM: 2x2 GB DDR3 1066 of Transcend/Kingston : 4500/-
                              PSU : some nice 500W (CM Real Power 460 : 3500/- or Corsair VX 450 for 4K

                              HDD: 320 or 500 gigs, a difference of ~800 bucks : 3000/-
                              DVD RW : 1300/-
                              live with earphones for now
                              Logitech mouse+kbd combo : 600 or 700 i think
CM 310 cabinet for 1500 is good vfm

This brings your total so far to ~22-23K

                              Now
Put all remaining cash into the GPU.

Get a 17' or 19' monitor with a max resolution of 1680x1050, and make sure the GPU you get is powerful enough. I'd suggest a HD 5770 for 9.5K or a 5750 for 8K.

This brings your total to around 30K. You do get 17-19' LCD's for 6K so it is almost in budget. Anyway this is as low as we should go for a good gaming experience.
