How to select a second hand bike?

I'm writing this for one of my friends, who is looking for a Bajaj Pulsar 180 ug4. What are the things to be kept in mind while inspecting a bike? How to look for engine flaws? What are the other areas to be attended? And finally, according to the current market rate what can be a fair deal? Pls help me... And is there any XBHP member in bhopal, who can be a guide?

See.. ita simple... a bike is like a girl friend.. its upto you how you keep her.. like a princess or maid

So firstly check out the bike body throughly... see for scratches or accidental marks.. its chesis, handle etc.. if the person can't keep his bike body in a good shape chances are he abuses his bike... also check the insaurance history of bike for any accidental claims...

If the bike looks good or ok then have a through test ride of 10-15 kms... in traffic as well as on highway... alone as well as with pillion rider... if the engine behaves good in every condition and you get a feelgood factor then comes the final step

Take the bike to a very good macanic of your city... offer him some money like 100-200 to chec it throghly for everything... engine, pollution etc

If he gives ok report then discuss with him how much you should pay for bike... take his quote and you should be ready to pay 5k-10k more then that as genrally macanics don't quote much

Thus... if you think you like this bike and you want it then bargain with the seller and buy it

Btw your friend can opt for a brand new discover 125 ST.. I don't think there would be much power difference between a Pulser 180 and Discover ST... and you will get a new bike for few xtra bucks then you will pay for an old one

PS : I personally don't prefer buying second hand bikes... a second hand can never compete with a beand new one.. but a second hand only if you can't arrange funds.

You don't really need to check a Pulsar for engine faults. Just keep running it till the day it it stops. When it does, just plonk in a new one, a new one for a P220 cost just 2800 (spares) anyways, P180 should be even cheaper.

Just check if the peripheral parts like the chassis, bodywork, forks and rims are in good condition. If they are good, you should be good to go .

Paper work involved in buying a second hand bike

Can anyone tell me the correct process when buying a second hand bike and transferring it to my name.
I have zeroed in on a bike and the existing owner has a RC book which has a different name Is it still possible to transfer it to my name ?

                    Pls elaborate; this is confusing

Are you saying, the bike is under ABC while the owner's name is XYZ? If that is the case, then you're the N+1 owner (gives you an edge if you need to bargain)

Other possibility can be that the bike must be registered in the name of the guy's father or some elder brother. Try to find out the true story behind this. If the person mentioned in the RC book is accessible then I don't think it'll cause any problems.
Its the fusion of a two wheeled machine & a human being which creates a true biker.

Yes in RC book bike is mentioned as ABC but I spoke to XYZ who claims to be owner. Am not sure if he has Form 29,30(which is used to transfer ownership here in blore RTO) but still to get it to my name XYZ should first get registered in his name right ?

Thats not possible as they both are from different religions

The form numbers are same nation wide; the person from whom you're buying HAS to get the signature on all the forms matching the signature on RC (whoever it is)

Its not Father-Son thing; what ideally happens is, you're my friend & I buy your bike; I use it for sometime without transferring my name to RC; after a while I sell it to someone, so the bike is ideally owned by third owner; per law, (endorsed in RC) the third owner is actually second owner.

Considering the fact, your name is not in the RC for the moment, if the bike is been involved in any mishaps the first owner is in great trouble. This also gives the first owner an advantage of filing a FIR for a loss of vehicle

This is what I am concerned about
I need the first persons signature now as the second person is not at all authorized to sell it to me. This was a very good bike(old exotic bike with only 20k kms on ODO ) Sad I have to let it go.
                            Thanks for your replies

                              1. If you're concerned walk away
                              2. With all sales comes sales letter & deed; ask them to mention the dates very clearly as when you bought the bike & forms filled right in front of you (but still things can go wrong, but that's a chance you're willing to take)

That depends only upon you; you've to take some chances if you love the bike so much

That said, I too bought my Rx under the similar situation; I was ignorant on those terms 13 years ago; yes, sometimes, ignorance is a bliss
