  • Budget bike for daily commuting & weekend tours

    Hi,

I have saved enough money last year to buy a new bike. I like to mention that this will be my first bike, never owned a two wheeler except cycle before . But I used to ride my friend's scooters & bikes. The bikes I rode are HH Glamor, Discover 135 & Honda CB Twister.

    Here are my criteria :-

    Physique:
    I am 5'8" and 72kgs.

    Use:
I will use the bike mostly for daily commuting, 20kms avg. One weekends I will go for tours 240-300kms max with a pillion. My sister will be pillion, sometimes mom & dad, so I am bit concerned about pillion riding position, since my sister is still ok but mom is 50+.

    Budget:
My maximum budget is 60k. It will be good if its around 55-56k.

    Problems:
I am not very much used to bikes, and I generally ride a 30-40kmph avg.
Mileage is a big plus but not very essential. 55-60kmpl is Fine.
For 300km journey will a pillion, riding should be comfortable.
Electric start, DC lighting is a must since road condition is very bad here, not to mention very bad cyclists/rickshaws are here in narrow roads.

I have seen some bikes in my budget. Discover DTS-Si 100cc, Discover 150cc, Pulsar 135LS, HH Passion Pro Power Start, HH Super Splendor.

I need the help of you guys since I am completely new to this, to choose my first bike.

Your options if you want to do some touring.
      Pulsar 135
      Honda Stunner
      Yamaha Gladiator
Bajaj discover 150 (pick this only if you really want a 150 and cant afford anything else)

***Here is why I rejected the rest***

twister nothing but a stylish commuter. Pathetic on the highway
discover 135: why do you want that bike? you already have a better bajaj in your list(135 LS)
HH glamour: another commuter, cant do touring, no highway manners.(read too slow)
Passion: 100cc and you want to go touring?
      discover 100: same as passion
Super splendor: are you 100 years old? power and looks are useless to you?

I never mentioned Discover 135 .... it's production stopped. I told about new Discover 150. When I went to a test ride of discover 100, I found that discover 100 costs 48.7k on road here & discover 150 as 52.6k

I considered super splendour because of the budget only, and it has the same engine in which I leaned riding(Glamor). HH Splendor costs 52.3k on road.

I went to Yamaha showroom, they are saying Gladi SS is only model they have for now, and it's 63k . Too much for a 125cc bike.

I really want to skip Stunner as I personally dont like the look of stunner, and its 60k on road, same as P135.

TVS Star City/Sports could have been a good bike for me, but TVS support is pathetic here, so I don't want to take that chance. Many friends of mine here have Apache RTRs and they always have to wait 3-8weeks if a part is broken.

About 100cc bikes, I really do not have the experience. I mean I am really new to bikes so do not have a clear idea about how early 100cc bikes get tired or so. That's precisely why I posted here.

I personally liked the P135, but I am worried about the pillion because of the sporty stance.

As you mentioned your parents can be your pillion while on the tours I would suggest you the follwing bikes(keeping your budget in mind) :

Honda Shine : Tried and tested product. Decent mileage of 50-60, respectable pull although lesser than P135(Ruled this out as for parents this wont be really comfortable) and Gladi(As its out of your budget). Engine refinement in unquestionable as its a HONDA.

Discover 150 : Would suit your needs perfectly in my opinion. Being a 150cc it would have a decent pull and mileage too should be comparable to the 125cc bikes. Fits well within your budget and ought to be comfortable for pillion. But this one if you don't have any issues with Bajaj quality.

Chuck off the 100cc ones hands down as they wont be really gud while you tour with a pillion and will only leave you wanting for more.

I do not have any issues with quality of Bajaj bikes. I think Honda shine is a bit costly. I just called Honda and they are saying Shine is 58k on road , and stunner is 59.5k .

I also asked some of my friends, they also suggested that 100cc will be a bad choice, even for a newbie like me.

What do you guys think about P135 as a commuter? I mean the pillion & rider seating position & comfort?

P135 does not have a very comfortable pillion seat.

i used shine for a year..the initial pull is good dud..and very reliable bike too..absolutely no maintenance...and good mileage figure too...but i do believe that touring on a 100 to 125cc bikes is a little headache...in that case try p150 but i dont know its onroad price

                        P150 is 65k on road. It's 14.09bhp. New 2010 P150 is 15bhp. P135 is 13.5bhp & 60k on road here. But its 21 kilo lighter & more nimble(143kg-122kg).

Performance is more or less same for P150 & P135.

But P150 is outta my budget too.

Just one thing, Disco150 has no tacho but 12.75Nm torque @5500 but Pulsar150 is 12.5Nm torque@6500

Then go test ride the Disco150. Pulsar150 would be around 7k dearer to your budget(depends on your state though...check from teh dealers).

Yeah Honda bikes are usually a tad costlier than its competition but trust me that li'l premium would be compensated in long run. Their product quality is top-notch. Although I don't own one but I can vouch for it as lots of my relatives/friends are using them.

Forget that segment if you are serious about touring

IT IS A SPORTS-COMMUTER. But pillion comfort ain't that good when compared to Shine/Discover.

What I heard from people around here that It was a very comfortable bike as well as damn cheap. Donno why this is almost as costly as pulsar 150 here. No idea really. I will try to get information from another Yamaha dealer in nearby town. Let me check what comes out. Oh yes, Its Gladi type SS
