  • Moving to Mumbai from US, need motorbike advice

    I'm moving to Mumbai in Jan and not particularly familiar with Indian motorbikes. Hopefully some of you can provide

    some insight into options that suit my preferences. They are:

    1. Budget of up to approx Rs 90k, though this is flexible.
    2. Combination of commuting + touring, both solo and with one passenger. For reference, I'm 5'11", 200 bls (91 kg).
    3. I like an upright, "standard" riding position. I dislike equally the strong forward lean of aggressively styled sportbikes and the rear lean of cruisers.
    4. Reliability is important for the first 2-3 years
    5. I have a strong preference for low-RPM torque rather than high-RPM zip...though I don't know if I'll have many options in this regard.
    6. Top speed is not a primary factor, but ability to accelerate my heft swiftly in traffic, when necessary, is desired
    7. I'm accustomed to riding 650 - 1100 CC bikes, but am looking forward to a smaller, more nimble bike for riding in Mumbai. That said, I probably want >= 200 CC
    8. Front disc-brake is a must.
    9. Adjustable, robust suspension. The more robust suspension the better (for my weight), though of course this can always be addressed aftermarket.
    10. Style-wise, I prefer the neat, clean lines of (nearly) naked / standard bikes and cafe racers, with minimal or no fairing.

    The bikes that have caught my eye so far:

    * Bajaj Pulsar 220-S. I probably like the looks of this bike the best of the ones I've found to date, and the 220 CCs is appealing, given my size.
    * Hero Honda Karizma R. Don't much care for the fairing, though.
    * Royal Enfield Electra Twinspark. Intriguing! Though the riding position may be too close to cruiser-style for my preferences.

    Questions, thoughts, recommendations?

      Hi brian,if you are looking for a load lugger i'd suggest the thunderbird twinspark.Fits a majority of the criteria that you have mentioned,though you mite have to stretch the budget a bit.

        +1 to the above comment.

        Thunderbird Twinspark will be the best option for you & power wise also it will be great. The riding comfort is good, for both. Also has a back rest for pillion so that will be comfy on long rides(if you are planning to take pillion).

        Though price will be 1lakh + & there might be a waiting period.

          You could even think about the Yamaha FZ for reliability, low and mid range torque and budget. Or even the Suzuki GS150r comes to mind..

            We only have a select few 200+cc bikes...
            The ones you have already listed (plus the 350 Royal enfield fleet) but they arent @ 90k

            If I were you, I would chose the ZMAr, warning: it have expensive spares and a very shoddy headlamp (that could be fixed via after market parts too)

            The 220 is a good buy, loaded with torque..

            Under 200CC you may want to look at
            - Honda Dazzler \ Unicorn
            - Suzuki GS150R
            Super CommuTOURer� - Talk less, Ride more

              A ThunderBird seems perfect for you..........
              but if there would be waiting periods,Dump it and get a ZMR-a perfect tourer

                ZMR Sounds perfect.. however please do enquire about availability of spares.. there might be an issue with that. Bullet is an awesome bike however, maintainence is tad bit on the higher side.

                  Go for the Pulsar 220 F , 220 s has poor lighting compared to the faired version .p220 has great low end torque , the riding posture you need and will be in your budget . would have also suggested Karizma but it seems to be having lot of spares availability issues recently .

                    The Thunderbird isn't gonna be of that much help in the city traffic, right?
                    It's known for its cruising abilities, with super-comfy seating and back support for the pillion...
                    The Karizma is the best bet.. But availability and the cost of the parts can be a problem in the long run..

                            The ZMA-R suits perfectly for most of your requirements. The 220 has a sporty posture which you might feel uncomfortable but its a VFM product. I would suggest the Ninja if the budget is not an issue.

                              Thanks, all, for the recommendations so far.

                              Based purely on photos online, I suspect the Thunderbird is too much a cruiser riding position for my tastes.

                              At first glance, the ZMR and ZMA-R have too much fairing for my tastes, but if they suit most of my other preferences, then I'm game.

                              Thanks for the tip on the better lighting on the 220-F. Any idea if the side fairing is easily removable? Is the lighting a completely different design, or simply better stock bulbs and/or reflector? I'm wondering if I'm better off getting the -F and removing the fairing, or the -S and upgrading the lighting.

                              Just saw the Ownership thread for the Pulsar 220...will have to work my way through it...it may have answers to my questions above. But if anyone knows the answers off-hand, I'd appreciate a quick heads up to save me the trouble of wading through gobs and gobs of owner posts.

                              At this point, I think I owe myself a test ride of the ZMR, ZMA-R, P220, and maybe the Electra Twinspark just for kicks. Do Indian dealers allow solo test rides?
