  • New Classic500 or Used Machismo 500 AVL?

    Hi guys,

I've booked a Classic 500 in July. However, a good friend of mine is offering his 2007 Nov Machismo 500 AVL for sale, which has done only 12k kms.

AFAIK, the Machismo scores on comfort. And it doesn't help that the Classic 500 is not going to be delivered anytime soon. What do you think? Should I go for the Machismo? Specifically, I'd like to know how the reliability and maintenance is, vis a vis the Classic 500?

    Thanks in advance!

      Thanks for the approval!

The major difference between the Classic500 and the Machismo AVL, is obviously the EFI 500 engine. Can Bull owners give me an opinion on the old AVL?

Some of the things I've read:
      1. I've heard the EFI might have some altitude problems. The AVL might score on this front.
      2. The starter/sprag clutch issue is common to both models.
      3. The Machismo comes with 19 inch wheels, not preferable for touring.

      Any more?

It depends on the deal you are getting for the Machismo. If you are getting it for a good deal and you are not particular on getting a new bike and that too with those stylish classy looks then you can go for the Machismo. It's a good bike with almost same amount of power as the Classis 500. Personal opinion is that the classic has a charm of it's own and looks more appealing to me

Though I don't own a Bullet myself, but my close friend had bought a second hand Bullet 535 Lightning. All I would comment is that stay away from a second hand Bullet. And this is not based upon only my friends experience.

          Go for a new Bullet

The Machismo I am considering has done only 12k on the odo. Would you still recommend against it?

I'm being offered the Machismo for 80k. Not too sure if thats a good deal for a 3 year old 12k on the odo Machismo. What do you think?

@ 535: Dont ever compare that bike to the Machismo since machismo is a much better bike than the Lightning 535. I agree 535 had raw power and was very torquey and all but too expensive to maintain and in order to make it run without any hassles for sometime lot of internal work had to be done which unless you have the money and time it's a real waste buying that. Nevertheless it was a nice bike in it's time.
@ deal: Seems to be an "ok" deal if it's really done only 12k. Take it for a ride, check all the usual things to be seen while getting a second hand bike and do take a proper Bullet mechanic with you. If you get service records nothing like it since you say it's from your friend, you might be lucky. And i do agree that buying a second hand bullet is quite a risk cause if you get the wrong one you are done for. So do be extra careful if you are going for it.
Bottomline is go for it only if it's a genuine deal . Good luck !

The Machismo 500 is a beauty and more comfy (19" wheels make it a better touring veh.)
If you love the machismo looks , 80k sounds great for a 12k run AVL 500 . The power is adequate to do 90-100 kmph highway touring and great for city.

P.S. I am not a fan of classic , finishing isnt good on that bike and the seat is very very poor.

Go for the classic. Less transmission losses, great looks, more tire options and parts availability. Getting parts for the 500LB is proving to be a NIGHTMARE!!!

@Niks: great to see you own a Machismo yourself. I agree with you on the seat. I took the Classic for a TD about 10 times. Each time, I was a little disappointed with the seat, and nothing else. Why do you say a 19" is better for touring? And why is the 18" now touted as "an improvement"? Pardon me, I'm quite ignorant on this topic. Also, what do you think about the comment on availability of spares?

@all: thank you for your inputs!

Ram, you seem to be more inclined towards the Machismo and it's obvious that you like the deal and since it's from your friend it must be a genuine deal too.
If you are not convinced about the Classic even after you've taken it for a spin 10 times then why go for it and regret later?
@ 19in: I've always felt it's best suited for touring, bigger the wheel better it is and the tyres for the bullets have always been a blessing on rough roads as well as on the highways. Only thing, handling wont be that good when you are seated in a higher position but when you get used to it and with the standard handle bar it becomes much easier. Only when you sit on a 19" wheel Bullet you actually feel like you are sitting on a bullet otherwise you just dont get that 'feel' , hope you can appreciate that. Anyways take a decision based on what your heart says and go by it. All the best.

Bigger wheels give more comfort on potholed roads. The advantage of 18" is that you will get more tire options. Although you get fantastic 19" pirelli which u can put on.

Spares? I guess that will be an issue with almost all AVL's and new bikes. Although I haven't had an issue yet with any kind of spares , but yes it could be an issue. You can PM JayPrashant(h) and he will be able to guide u on the spares front.
