  • 1st bike! Novice Rider

Hello Guys i`ve been following xBHP for the past 2months
Because my mom said yes to buying a new bike

Let me tell something about myself
    as in preferences and all

    I`m a 18year old
I am almost zero biking experience
    PS:
I Have Driven Honda Activa for about 500Kms
I am experienced when it comes to activa but a full bike zero experience
    My Budget is around 80k

    I am 5ft 11"
    Weight:79Kgs
    Good built
I Need a showy bike as i will ride it to college everyday
    My Travel:
    Daily 10-15Kms
    Weekends 20-25 Kms
So i Guess FE isnt a great problem!
My Riding is mostly city riding
Hitting the highway is a rare
    Average Speed 50-80

    I `ve Shortlisted
    Fazer
P220-Carb (AS Fuel injected version production is stopped by Bajaj )
These are the only Bikes i think which have looks and performance

    I have Ridden
    P220(carb) - for around 5kms
    Fazer-2 Kms
    These are Friend`s bikes

    Whatever is my observation:
    P220-
    Great Pickup
    Good acceleration
    Lack of Zing

    Fazer-
    Great Looks
    Very Good Handling
    Lack of power somewhat felt
    very good braking

This is what i`ve noticed maybe not proper but theses are my views!
I Know P220 and Fazer belong to Different Segments!
Then too i`m keen on one of these

RTR 180 i dont like the looks
Karizma ZMA goes above 90K in mumbai so out of question!

Please Need some expert advice on this

xtc welcome aboard and congrats for the first step you took on being a biker. IMO since you have Zero riding experience rather than power you should go for a bike in which you feel comfortable.

        P220 anyday...
but ya giant power leap may be a problem....
just handle p220 with ease for first 2-3 months and you'll surely adopt....

          Welcome to xbhp brother.
So coming to the point i will suggest you to look on fz16 for ur requirements.
Bcoz i dont feel P220 is a novice rider bike, its heavy and performance is lap ahead than others.

Fazer has the advantage in city riding, handling and looks. Moreover considering your speed requirements P220 would be an underkill. why buy such a powerful bike when you won't be using even 3/4th of its power. But i'm not sure if your height suits the Fazer.

I dunno if I'm qualified enough for giving advice since I'm quite a new rider myself. But I find your scenario somewhat similar to mine. I'm 19. Bought the Fazer about a year ago. It's my first bike as well. Even I'm from Mumbai...use it for college commute including highways. I agree that the Fazer cannot match P220 in power. But the handling and pickup is superb. While leaving for college during the peak trafficsome hours of the morning, there's little scope(mebe for me as a novince rider!) for guzzling speed and mindblowing power. But the Fazer helps me get through easily thanks to its great handling. P220 might be a full package of handling+power. But I wasn't sure if I could handle a full-blown bike as my first one. I'm really enjoying my Fazer. Its true that higher speeds seems like a stress for this bike. But till 80-85 its really very good.
If u r scard of fallin off d bike, u'd never really get on...

Honest and justified review. If you're unbiased and know your (and your bike's) limits and strong points, then you're always eligible to advise someone, buddy. No matter how new you are to xBhp.

                  @Threadstarter

Even I find that P220 will not suit your requirements as you won't be using even 70% of what it is meant for. Fazer/FZ is a nice bike with decent power and they suit you the most (as per your wants and requirements).

Just a question in my mind. Why didn't you considered the new Hunk? Its reliable as its a Honda engine (I know its HH, but engine's reliability and tech. can be trusted as we do on Honda) PLUS the new iteration comes with digi speedo, disks at both rear and front, muscular looks, VFM also. Leaving it as a suggestion for you as I thought it would suit you. Rest is your choice. If you've already zeroed upon "FZ/Fazer or P220" then I'll suggest FZ for you.

The FZ/Fazer are more suited to people with lesser height. Not that you'd have any problems riding it, but MIGHT look a bit odd on the bike.

Thanks Dude your View regarding fazer made me more inclined towards it
Also tell me how much did it exact cost you
did you buy from the Yamaha Showroom besides Lakozy Toyota
                      Any discounts?

I Didnt like the HH Hunk in its first look itself!
Rather than a Hunk i`d buy an FZ

                        @ xtc

No buddy i didnt get it from the Yamaha Factory shop. I got it from a local shop called "Riya Automobiles" in mulund where i stay. It was recommended by an uncle of mine. You see I booked it last dec when my exams were going on. Plus its also the very first bike in my family(my dad, having once slipped on a friend's bike years ago, had never rode one ever!) so my dad would be accompanying me for all the major booking procedure. And malad being quite far off for his schedule, we decided to get it from the guy recommended by my uncle. I got it for Rs.83,300.
But yes, the Yamaha factory shop which you are talking about is quite good. My bro got his R15 from there. Dunno about discounts though..

                            Hi,

hope i am not too late posting this (its kinda long..so bare with me for a while !!)... I presume you are locking your choice with Yamaha so here it goes..

Fazer/FZ both are good bikes and will fetch you an average of 38-45 kmpl on mileage. If you ride more on highway and maintain a speed of 65-75kmph on top gear then you can expect higher mileage as well (May vary based on riding style and bike condition). I am currently a proud owner of FZ and have already crossed 4000 kms on the odo in less than 3 months and so far haven't faced any body noise, lose fairing, nor any major hiccups so far.

However, on FZ, the rider does get affected by cross winds and the top speed suffers coz of higher wind resistance at 80+ kmph. Fazer with the fairing... is aerodynamically much better.. and the top speed is better...though this is based on my personal experience.. others may have a different opinion.

Engine specification wise, both bikes have the same engine and develop the same power. Even after constant thrashing of speed excess of 90+ for hours, i have never faced engine over heating or reduction in power in any manner. The gears are butter smooth and super slick to shift.

FZ is onroad for Rs. 75, 550 in Mumbai and Fazer is for around Rs. 83,300 - 500 (Don't remember the exact quote).

One piece of advice though... if you are going for the fazer/fz.. please do inspect everything i.e. any scratches, dents, any kind of oil leak from the engine, rust on metal, nuts and bolts, cracks on the fairing, cables protruding from the handle...including the bike's battery.. rather i say insist on checking the battery's terminals for any sulphur/carbon deposit(Greenish colour). i had this problem in barely 2 months from purchase date and my bike refused to start as the battery was not able to supply electricity to the console and the starter motor(See post: http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/motorcyc...tml#post522162).

Although, it may be a rare case, but its better to be safe than getting stuck in the middle of traffic and then be pissed off with yamaha i say..

Do all your inspection and take the delivery in the day time only as you will have better visibility to pin point anything out of order in your prospective bike. Refuse to take the delivery of the bike unless they take care of your concerns if you find any.

Welcome to XBHP and the world of motorcycles. Since, you are new to all this, i suggest go through the threads on the art of safe riding, riding gears and helmets posted in this site in various sections. It will help you in understanding and becoming a sensible and safe rider.

Buy yourself good riding gear though before you hit the road.

                            Cheers mate
