  • The age old 150 cc battle rages in my head....

First off, a little about myself...

M having this 125cc Yamaha Fazer for the past 5 years, m currently a 2nd year grad student......

Now, maintenance wise, m not very good at it, m always short on funding sources... Just keep all core biking parts ok if nethng goes wrong... In fact i went around with a defunt speedo for almost a year and managed to change my bike battery after 4 years (when it was reduced to even unable to sound my horn properly)...

Now , m doing good in colg nd my dad has agreed to get me a new bike. But i have been scratching my head for the past 2 months, nd i still am....

Now my targeted bike is the Hunk, for many reasons :

    1. monthly officially i get ONLY 4 litres from home, and rest all comes from burning my pocket. So mileage is a BIG thing ( Yamaha bikes go kaput in this point, Hunk gets a big plus)

    2. My fazer is almost 6 years old, nd it has only 10k on the odo. So u can assume the type of rider i am, occasional, mostly short rides, and a seldom long 1. So my bike is left unused for many days, nd i am quite scared to buy some new bike Without kick start for this reason.... At least if self doesnt work, i can kick the hell out. (again, yamaha gets a cross, dazzler, NEW hunk, all are without kick so in my black list , Old Hunk seems the best bet)

    3. When m on long drives, i like to push it hard. And i am utterly disgusted how my current fazer screams to cross 100, and how "unsmooth" it gets after a whole day of hard riding.... So riding smoothnesss is perhaps the next most important point... (I shud probably get the unicorn, but for a grad student, that bike is as old as a fossil )

    4. Getting a new bike at this point of life, i wud want to grab some eyeballs... So obviously , at the back of my mind , looks is a very big factor... But its the bargaining of hot looks and cold logic that is driving me mad....

So, i wud ask for suggestions, what shud i get ? Old Hunk ?

or are the new bikes without kick start reliable enough for me to go for it ? ( considering it with my not-so-good maintenance )

or shud i just even wait some more if ne good bike is coming around the corner which might satisfy most f my criteria ?

i dont want to jump into any decision ..... and m very confused. pls help....

        Hi satadip,

Looking at your requirements, I feel Hunk is a good choice since it has a balance of mileage and performance. Plus it looks great and is now upgraded with rear disc and digital speedo. Apache will burn a hole in your pocket comparatively. Other choices are P150 which you may like or not(its too popular) and the dazzler which is a direct competitor to hunk with the same engine and almost same features. All these three bikes will return you a little more than 50 in city and can give you the thrill when on freeways. But if Hunk is set on your mind, then go ahead.

So shud i go with the new model or the old one ? M a bit naive about the absence of kick starter.... Because i have no idea about reliability of the self in new bikes and approx longevitiy ?? What if the bike stalls in some rain or cold start ?

          Thanks, btw....

Hunk would've been my choice in the criteria provided by you..

New Hunk fit the bill very well. Though I would like to point out some concerns based on what you said ..

                .
Considering your riding habits, a kick starter may be strongly recommended. Battery gets recharged when you ride and needs occasional maintenance. But you riding habits may not allow sufficient time for battery to recharge.

btw, I have removed kick starter from my bike as there is very little chance of battery going dead prematurely in my case, a I ride daily, and do at least 2 hours of non-stop ride at least once a week. So my almost 2 year old battery is still as good as new.

my frind has a hunk and ended selling it because of some issues in the engine... 2 of my frnds have cbz extremes and did roughly 13k on the odo and they have issues as well.... if i were u , i would go for the dazzler with my eyes closed... and if u want choice, the gs 150r.. i had a honda unicorn for 5 years, crashed n number of times and trashed it like absolute hell... did 60k on the odo while sellin it,just had to decarbonise the head, new valves and was better than new !!! Even at 60k,the clutch plates were still not worn out.... go honda....
RED BULL did'nt give me WINGS, my BIKE did !!

Have you tried the P135 ? I think it should be ideal bike for you. Mileage is good, pick up & power is also nice... (Does 115 Kmph)

                      New Hunk is fine.
Kickless start must not be a problem for you if you manage to run your bike for few kilometers for every 3 days.

Haven't you tried the Pulsar 135LS, atleast looks different. The Hunk hasn't exactly set the sales charts on fire. Regarding the kickless bikes, I guess the only option is to push start the bike whenever you take it out, considering your usage. I believe the Pulsar 135LS gives a better mileage than the Hunk, so will be lighter on your pocket too !!!

considering your height factor p135 would look like a small bike......consider the new hunk and dazzler(there wont be a problem as such for self start but if it everr happens then you can dhakka start it....)......and then there is unicorn(10 months waiting) + GS150R(both with kicks)but i wont recommend you a GSR as its a heavy bike and it is meant out for highway thrills only......
