I'd recommend you to think for some scooter, like Activa, Aviator, Pleasure, Access, etc... which will suit his requirements better! He gets to carry luggage, like - vegetables, groceries, etc.. which is a trouble in bikes.. They're likely more comfortable, safer/ protective and easier than bikes for him.

He can go for bikes if needs basically mileage and/ or power, otherwise scooters, I say!

See what are exactly his requirements first, what he needs from a two-wheeler? What he intends to do with it.. Also, has he been riding two-wheelers regularly or recently. Think from his point of view, not yours..

Rajesh, there's lot of suggestion & recommendation that we can provide ranging from CBR 250R to Discover 100 ES, but the fact remains that, what's your Uncle's expectation from the motorcycle. The one's you've provided are more generalized, like, when we speak on mileage, Discover 100 ES as well as CD Deluxe provides more than 80 Kmpl, but which one to choose remains the question on expectation.

To think from the provided input's point of view, I'd suggest to stick with any products from BAL or HH for the moment. Reason being that, BAL has spreaded over their service centres more than HH. Preference to HH is because of their quality in their products. Also, CD gives a posture of sitting in a chair versus Discover which has a very slight lean forward position. So, IMO, CD should be more comfortable than the ES. However, if one looks at VFM, the ES is no doubt an excellent VFM product that comes with host of facilities like electric start & auto choke (good for elderly people), gas filled rear suspension & a price tag lower than CD.

Pls keep us posted on what he bought.

@vishnups17 n @Rune: buddy his uncle is 50 and good riding posture is a necessity, i dont think a HH splendour can provide it.

          @rajesh1136: @aargee +1...

tell us about his riding behaviour/distances likely to cover, minimum n maximum and and his experience on geared bikes.
that might help in deciding between a scooter and or bike.

before making a buy, do go for a neat test drive.
observe how he feels about the ride comfort for each scooter/bike he rides, demand atleast a 5km single stretch test ride.
Compromise/decide on other issues like mileage after that
Presence of MIND and self CONFIDENCE is the primary aspect You need to be on road, not what brand your riding gears are.
If you lack these two then DONT

HH Splendor +/HH Passion plus: The best bike for a family man. Pros: Absolutely zero trouble, good mileage, good handling in city, light weight, good pricing, parts are available at cheap rate everywhere across this country. Cons: Style (Splendor), Passion has a much better look.
There is not many trouble free (yes, I mean it) motorcycles on Indian road as good as above 2.
From my personal experience, HH delivers the best quality vehicles (I will not say that they have the best performers) in India at reasonable rates.

Since your uncle has back pain, I will not recommend any scooter!

If price is not the issue, nor the mileage, for most comfortable ride on a bike, I suggest Bajaj Avenger for low seat height and very stable ride quality.

And, yes, please see to it that he tries all the vehicles before zeroing on one.

            Hope this helps.

^^^ Agreed with @ARNandal - Test ride is MOST important factor that SHOULD be done before buying. If this is going to be an important buy, ask your Uncle to adjust sometime with the showroom guys (I know its insane, but that's how things work in India) & take a good ride over city and/or highway to get a feel on the motorcycle.

PS - Couldn't help asking, if your Uncle is suffering from back pain, why settle in for a motorcycle at all?

Tata Nano! is the best bet for "Family Bike for elderly man".

IMO in bikes shine would be a good choice , scooters are'nt reali a good choice for someone having back pain...infact any two wheeler will only worsen his back pain given the roads in india... nano perhaps
Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle.

I think the new YBR range is nice, if he things 50 is too much. But if since he has back pain, slightly heavier bikes like Gladiator, SZ, Fazer, GS will be ideal as they shake less. From my experience M800, Nano is giving more back pain than my RX with upright seating/posture

@rajesh: why dont you give him your bike? Great ride, great comfort, decent mileage. Though pillion riding will be tough for aunties because of high seating. Ive done 200 kms with minimal breaks and just had slight shoulder pain and a bit of lowr back pain if I didnt sit straight.

I heard wego is a very good machine.

                              + points
Refinement, Free-revving, perky engine, Handling ( big mag wheels, and superb chuckability make it feel more like a motorcycle)

External fuel-lid: Does not require the rider to alight and raise the seat to tank up.
Pick up a ride and rewrite yourself to a new Identity.....
