  • Best Commuter Bike

Hi friends, here i am in a dilemma, one of my friend needs a bike for two years, he wants a bike which can handle daily commuting of around 100km (city+highway), he is looking for a bike in a budget of around 55k, he wants a comfortable bike, with low maintenance & good fuel efficiency.
I have short-listed few bikes for him you can suggest other bikes according to his requirement, what we are looking at are:
    yamaha szx
    pulsar 135
    tvs sports
    honda twister
    tvs jive

    waiting for your suggestions guys

Seeing ur 100+ kms for ur daily commuting you should go for something like 220 if your friend has a little extended budget & for spending that extra money, i'm sure he won't regret. Anyways, since u've already short listed ur options, my suggestion would be to go for Yamaha SZX as the bike has a 150 cc engine which makes highway cruising a little easy compared to the other competitors in the list, good mileage (my friend gets something like 50km/litre), disc brakes, reliable engine & a good service network. These would be my justifying points towards Yamaha SZX, let me see what others suggest too.

Yamaha SZ-X would be the bike to go for considering your friend's usage.

The bike is bigger/better both in size as well as power in comparison to others so will be more comfortable for longer rides!!

The SZX doesn't have disc brakes. You may want to go for the SZR.

And yes, going for a higher cc bike would be preferable considering the high daily usage. Since all 150cc bikes generally cost above 60k, SZR seems to be the cheapest and the best option. (I haven't considered the Bajaj Discover 150)

Why not the slingshot from Suzuki. Looks good, decent power n FE, reliable Suzuki engine and im sure would be comfortable.
Otherwise, 100 cc commuters like HH Passion meets comfort and FE requirement.

Do you really think that a 100cc or a 125cc bike is good enough for a daily commute of 100 Kms???

For such long daily usage, 150cc would be more comfortable and reliable.

Unicorn (not Dazzler) would be cool too (I have first hand experience - 54k kms in 3 years - 96km daily)

@ dual disc 200, it would be great if he go for Ninja or HD IRON 883 , but due to budget restriction & fuel efficiency, i am afraid he have to settle for 100 to 150cc bikes, yes sz is one of the bike i suggested him
@ Satyamzma, chicane1879, thanks for your suggestion, where does discover 150 stands against sz.
@ cmahajan, yes discover 150 is looking good value for money.
@ vivekpetrohead, i left suzuki bikes because of spare part availability & low resale value.
@Centaur, yup unicorn is good but it is outdated bike, so.
@eliksir, i suggested him to go for pulsar 135 because it's fun to ride can keep up with most of 150cc bikes & even beat some of them, fuel efficiency is also good & is the latest technology bike with 4-valve engine.

one more thing, he also wants fuel efficiency above 50km/l

Forget D150, SZ, SZ-X or SZ Whatever. Suggest him P135. It can eat most of these 150cc's on performance and will give better mileage too . Not to forget its 4V.

Why not......He has a budget of 55k and he also needs good mileage bike for a 100 kms daily commute. He needs a bike that gives him a good 65 kmpl or more considering the fuel costs. No 150 cc bike will give that kind of mileage unless you are constantly riding within 60 kmph. If thats how you are gonna ride a 150 cc, why not get a 100/110/125 cc bike which will also be light on the pocket compared to a 150 cc.

I aint no fan of commuters bt that was just a practical suggestion considering the guys requirement. From the bikes he shortlisted, IMO, CB Twister would be the best choice.

First of all, you should focus on a segment, before deciding the optimal bike for your friend's needs:

If 100cc is what you're looking for, Discover 100 has the best mileage. And from the feedback I gathered from OWNERS THEMSELVES, the bike is pretty reliable and has low maintenance. Mileage stays around 70-80 kmpl depending on the owners' riding style. And it has a 5th gear too. It is the pinnacle of 100cc bikes no doubt.

Twister is 110cc & will return good mileage, around 65-70. You can take more info from the people who own them, although it should fare good. Handling is very good for city.

If 125cc is what you want, go for Honda Shine. It has the best of all worlds, but be aware it has 4 gears and it vibrates at high rpm's. Mileage is high for a 125. Something around 70-77 kmpl.

In the 150cc segment, Discover 150, SZx & P135 would be good for comfort & city level commuting, & even better if you can find some highway rides too.
But, If under 60 kmph commuting is all you need, there are better, lighter & frugal alternatives available for the purpose.

                              -
@ vivekpetrohead: +1. Low end torque and the bike's focus matters. I rode a Discover 100 some time back, and it really had a good torque output @ low rpms' too. Plus the low weight & more mileage, and this makes it a better deal for commuters, than Pulsar, etc. A heavy bike might tire the person soon enough.
