  • In a Dilemma - R15 or Pulsar 220

    Hello Guys,

Well I am new to this forum and planning to buy a bike soon (maybe in march 2011). So was researching on the best bike around and will be buying it from my own money (earning through Blogging).

Presently I own a scooty pep and its high time that i better get a bike. BTW that scooty was for my sister but i had no other option than riding that itself.

    About Me :

    Height :5'9 or 5'10
Weight :59 Kg (I am building up and aiming for 70 KG as its my ideal body weight)
Age :Presently 19 and will be buying the bike on my 20th Birthday

    Requirements:

Daily commuting of 3 to 4 Kilometres
    Will be touring rarely
A good and a respectable mileage. (Pep gives me 30 mileage so around that will be fine)
    Budget :1 Lakh 10 thousand

    My choices :

    1) R15
I love this bike. But the problem is that I heard its not for tall people. Another big problem is that my father whose aged 45 years will also be riding the bike so wont he have back problems ? I can buy this bike for myself but what about the family aspect

A Blunder : When my parents visited the yamaha showroom the guy inside who introduced to the R15 said that this bike is good but so good. its only for rich people. Its not meant for potholes kinda road and its a track racing bike.
So the showroom guy filled some bad impression in my parents mind about the R15

    2) Pulsar 220
This bike is the no1 choice of my parents because of the price and looks. (dont know why parents dont like the looks of R15)
I too liked this bike before i know R15. I dont like 220 design. I am also scared of its weight.
Well i can ride this bike and its perfect for my dad too. It just fixes my budget

So guys I am damn confused. Tell me Which one to go for

Also want to know. Will be there be any new bikes going to be launched like 220 or R15 price range by march 2011?

      as per your requirements
      i personally do not think you need a r15 or a p220
these machines are for performance freaks
and the service center guy is right
r15 is a track bike, very advanced and not at all meant for bad roads

as per my opinion you should go for a commuter bike rather blowing your money for the liquid cooling, fuel injection what you really really do not need.

Naa...I dont want apache 180 or pulsar 180. I heard apache has lots of vibrations after 60 and pulsar 180 is too common.

            Why not R15 or 220?

Did it occur to you even a bicylce will do for the commuting part.. as far as it is 3-4 kms daily.. why do you have to spend 1 lakh 10 thousand for it?? seriously!!

for the touring part.. well i'm not a tourer yet so, I leave it to the fellow riders here!!

Well i need a bike for atleast for 3 years and yeah i may be joining an engineering college in 2012 so i will be needing it for touring for 20 to 30 Kms daily. I hope you will be able to able to understand my query with this

And yeah my friend tried the Apache first time of another friends and after the ride my friend (who test rode the bike) said that the bike started vibrating (he owns a pulsar 220).

And that time i thought its just his personal opinion but later i read in so many blogs that Apache does experience vibrations?

Anyways hows Pulsar 220..? and what mileage does it give

In overall the R15 is a better bike. But in the bumper to bumper city traffic the P220 is more practical.

If you would be touring then go for the R15 or else the p220. Even P220 is also a good highway bike (better than R15 in few aspects) but the R15 doesnt perform well in the city & the p220 rules in city. The R15 would be a lot more fun to ride bike than the p220 on highways thanks to its highly stable & vibration free engine.

                          Aren't the two statements contradictory?

Thats why i said the p220 is better in FEW aspects. Like its having a much better top end, pulling capacity & bit more stable (stable in the sense that it doesnt get very much affected to cross winds) & not to forget its more comfortable.

While the R15 is a fun to ride bike in the sense that it will be more stable (here stable in the sense that it has very low vibrations in the engine), it looks better (personal opinion), can munch more miles without any engine heating issues due to its liquid cooled engine & DiASil cylinder (again a personal opinion), has a bit sporty position which means whenever you sit on the bike you feel like a racer & hence fun, a rev free engine due to which its a pleasure to rip it.

Hence the above mentioned factors contribute to make the R15 a more fun to ride bike & the p220 a much better tourer.

I would suggest you go for the Pulsar 220 S version not the F one because your travel is mainly gonna be intracity where the fairing and the additional 4 kilos of it won't be of much use.But if you do like the fairing, the projector lamps and stuff and if you intend touring some months later F makes much more sense.
And for the usage that you are talking about 1.1 lakhs on R15 is an absolute waste(also the riding position isn't too good) and seriously speaking even 80K on pulsar would not be worth it
You could rather go for a 135 LS now and when actually want to do "HARDCORE" riding then go for a really good bike and am sure 2-3 years down the line much better bikes would have been released
