  • Clash of the titans!!! Help me choose my bike :)

    Hey guys,

    I am 24 y.o., weighing around 80kgs, 5.9 - 5.10" tall with an average build...

I live at chennai and would like to get a good performance bike with the best in class "acceleration" and a decent hassle free top speed ... Hmmm lets say 130+kmph on highways(without any vibration, good brakes and excellent handling) and of course with stunning looks with excellent build quality...

I already own an enticer and a scooty pep (worth mentioning ??? :/) and would use my new bike for commuting to and fro office at least twice or thrice a week (around 40 - 50 kms/day) and weekend trips and long rides(50-120 kms one way)..

I have already gone through a lot of forums n threads and done some research on the bike specs (even though I m still not convinced with my understanding over displacement torque and horse power... )

So, Let me make things easy with the least options to choose from!

    1. Karizma zmr - love the looks , not sure about the specs ... But hate the rear tyre??? ( I love bikes with wider rear tyres at least 130+)
    2. R15 - just because of the hype created by others in different threads and opinions...hight fits me...but please do note I have a pillion to ride with on weekends and guess this bike is a bad choice? ?? and also not sure if a 150 cc would be a better performer (as I said I ain't good with the specs, please help me out here!)
    3. Pulsar220 - just for the HP it has and nothing else... Seems a bit tall(not sure, as i already rode a p150 frequently which was fitting though!)... Hate the sound it produces and please note I revv a lot and bad at changing gears ... Just because I save 20k not sure if it would hav good quality for long run of about at least 5-6 years...

Apart from these I had in mind the mighty affordable cbr250r but I would not be buying it, so let's skip it and a big NO NO to the royal enfields for their meaningless waiting time... Please help me choose the best machine with macho looks (I like bulky and sporty looks), excellent performance and valu fr mony with the inputs given above

[PS: I can consider the Yamaha fzs / fazer and ktm duke if they would suit my needs, please justify]

    Thanks !!!

      Thanks !!!
Best in 'class' acceleration- Duke 200/R15
      130+ top speed cruising - CBR 250>Pulsar220>R15.
      Good brakes & handling- R15>DUKE>CBR 250
      Stunning Looks - R15/DUKE
      Built Quality- R15>DUKE>CBR 250

      as per your choices-
1>Drop ZMR from your list,as its not what you want,it neither Accelerates faster, nor has the top speed as you need.same goes for Yamaha FZ/Fazer.
2>R15 serves every purpose you need ,but I am not so sure for pilloin.
      3>Pulsar 220 is a great choice,though handling/breaking/Build quality wont be best.
Even though you are not considering CBR(what ever reason might be)I would say,it would be best for you.
I would suggest you to choose between CBR250/R15/DUKE 200.
and get a good quality helmet.all the best. ride safe.

Considering that you need good acceleration, top end, commuter, weekly tourer, quality etc i'd suggest you get your a duke. But i don't think the pillion comfort is very good in the bike.

          Thankyou sambit and warrior
Than Q sambit for the detailed opinion.

I had a test drive(ride?) on a r15, everything is good but the riding pose and the pillion makes it a rejection from my list, I may consider it as a last resort though :S

As for ktm duke - any idea of when it would b available and at what price otr chennai? Will it b good for the pillion as well?????? And the same questions with the p200ns

And about the Zmr - I had once taken out a karima - R some time bak for a ride and I feel happy about the acceleration feels decent but I pity it's puny rear looks which makes me feel bad if I ought to buy it evn thou it fits in my wallet well. Please suggest if it's of good value/quality and chances of changing the rubber to an 18" 130/80 without modding?

Finally abt the cbr - yes I LOVE it, took a ride on my friend's but 1.7 L for only weekend rides and a bad FE in city rides make it meaningless to buy ...

no idea about the availability and OTR will be around 1.3lakhs. About pillion comfort- not so bad but not so good either.
And about pulsar- it'll be available around april-may priced below a lakh, pillion comfort will be pretty good.

Hmmm... So duke sounds good. Not sure if it would suit me for the looks, not sure if I'd wait for the P2NS either!

Meanwhile I guess I might test drive the Zmr before next week and update. I m not sure why but I still hav my eyes on it, just abt changing the rubbers!!! Let's see, waiting for more inputs

If you ar OK with the power of ZMR , then go with it....its a very reasonable bike. You wont repent. Its is a very efficient tourer, stress free riding. But its no way compared to the accelaration of the other bikes mentioned.
R15 is an outright mini sports bike and Duke is a very powerful street bike...
And strictly dont mod the tires of ZMR.It serves its purpose. And for fat tires, you have to change the rim as well.So stay stock.Dont go by looks, its the functionality what matters.

Spend more and get the CBR 250. Considering your many requirements, anything else will be a compromise in one way or another.

Thanks again sambit Well, as said earlier I already rode the hh karizma, the old one a couple of times and would say the acceleration was 'ok' even though not as impressive as the r15 or the rtr 180 but kkarizma s short geared compared and welcoming for commuting.but anyway for speed and acceleration, Not sure y but the spec sheets of Zmr has more bhp & torq and displacement than the other 2 bikes mentioned but still falls behind as per the opinions across the web!!!(I would appreciate if someone could explain clearly these terms out of the spec sheets !!!) I was nt able to test the top speed as the places where I took it were pretty crowded but the pick up was decent enough with decent control as well. But according to HH it goes to around 125-135 which is good (IF THE BIKE IS SMOOTH & controllable AT 100-120 kmph, not sure if Zmr can handle that on highways). And for the tyre may I know what s the max possible width I could afford to put without altering the rim/other parts?

As said , I love it , but 60k more just for a marginal increase in experience only on weekends is outta my budget ( planning on a semi pro dslr for the 60k saved ), anyway thanks, please put ur inputs fr my earlier posts

dude,Karizma was never made for accelaration,it was meant to be comfortable mile muncher. Its heavy.
Google and read about factors affecting the performance,Bhp/tonn,gear ratios,torque....

And who said, spending 60 K on CBR gives only marginal increase in terms of performance over the rest??? its a monster....the price is totally justified.

I totally agree with you bro!!! To sum it up I never told that there will b marginal increase in performance but "experience as mostly I'll b riding in city for commuting and weekend "not so long" rides!

Considering that, I need te bike to have good pickup (from signals and turns) , good looks and best handling and quality. But the cbr seems over qualified :P thats wat I meant to boom shiva. No offense as I actually love cnr 250r

Seeking guidance and advice on my next new bike
