  • The 5yr old bike crisis- Upgrade to what ?

I never thought i would be facing this dilemma. It was all written out for me. The 220 - my first bike - the culmination of a childhood dream of buying my own bike - my love - my companion on innumerable trips - was gonna last me a lifetime. A few years down the line, a big brother SBK would be giving it company. The plan seemed foolproof. Sigh.
4.8 years later - the lady in red - CBR, the wicked oranged KTM and the Ninja twins spoilt it.

What i do with my bike:
Primarily touring, God and manager willing. My office commute is less than 10km, to and fro.
I am not really a speed junkie and enjoy the evolved and aware state of being when riding. Cornering is not my forte and neither do i have any thoughts of excelling in it. Though, sometimes i do go berserk with the speedy syndrome. One important point is that my wife rides with me as pillion on rides and we have even toured Ladakh on my trusty 220.

Why i want a new bike:
The 220 is showing its age. 19 horses cannot be flogged to death. A Joel FFE has given it some more juice but a single test ride of any of the above mentioned bikes puts things in perspective, pretty rudely

So, over the last few months i have been dilly-dallying around - flipping my bookings among these 4 bikes

    The KTM:
Absolute fun to ride and priced well within my budget.
Not great for pillion so useless for my touring purpose.
The 220 has to stay to do touring duty.
    Like'o'meter: 7/10

    Ninja 250
The bike which revvs around my vision all the time and makes me weak kneed when i see it in the showroom - the predator among the KTMs lying around.
Will not be able to use it as a tourer on the higher himalayas - its too precious.
Price is such that i can just about manage it by emptying my account.
Impractical, brash, very overpriced and oh so sexy
Plus the looming threat of a KTM 375/350 at the end of the year which might be priced similar to this.
    Like 'o' meter: 8/10

    Ninja 650
    Its a 650
Cannot take it to ladakh - have a fall - and not go sick in the stomach and in the bank.
Will be very high maintenance stuff - along with that EMI. No private parking.
220 will have to be used for most purposes- which kinda defeats the purpose.
    Like 'o' meter: 8/10

    CBR250
    Practical, efficient, boring.
Aargees FAQ thread on t-bhp makes me wanna book one ASAP.
Quality is iffy (my impression is from last year. Have heard that things have improved)
Ticks most of the touring requirements apart from the tyre which isn't supposed to be very great in the slush and gravel.
Can replace the 220 - as my all purposes bike.
    Like 'o'meter: 6/10

So here it is. My current dilemma. Have bugged kurtrules, dcs(Rohit), taken inputs from jalva (team-bhp), animated discussions with Niks_devil and have scourged the threads on both the forums.

I am not looking at the Hyosung 650N(not enthused by the vibe issues and the paper-thin service network) or any of the bullets(Have had bad experiences with the Electra and have sworn off them for good)

So people, let me know your thoughts - now that i have laid down this private dilemma out in the open. Looking for some perspective from owners of the respective bikes too with regards to touring on gravel/slush and in the hills.

I plan to close this by Saturday!

Shoots!!! Did that FAQ still confuse & not help so much

Go through the one here on CBR 250R ownership thread, posts #7500, #7600 & #8200, they're more frequently updated than the one TBhp.

Whatever you buy...good luck, ride safe & most importantly, don't forget to buy riding gears

though your vision is towards the sky, i will ask you to include 200NS in your list.
No pvt parking means no big stuff.
Trade in your 220 and get the most recent stuff!

The FAQ was wonderful. I wasn't even looking at the CBR (had cancelled my prebooking last year) but now, it is in contention.
PS: I hardly ever go out without gear

Thanks! The 200NS doesn't excite me. Lets just say i know that it is not what i am looking for
No Private parking - as in - i have basement parking in my society flat. No seperate enclosure.

Most 220 owners looking to upgrade have this problem currently. There is pretty much nothing to upgrade to.

The 220 gives an all round performance. And does its job pretty darn well.

Needless to say the bikes you have listed are all wonderful. But its not an upgrade. Its just moving up so-so. An upgrade would be something more on the lines of a 400-600cc bike.

My suggestion wait it out. See what is available in the market in the next 12-18 months. Hopefully you might get something more suitable to your touring needs. With a comfy pillion seat. Though I honestly find it surprising that your wife finds the 220 pillion seat comfortable!
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

              Ah my kindda thread

Same story, same boat, 4.5 years old 220 Fi, 86K kms on the clock ... except for the pillion bit.

My take, move to a CBR if you need something badly and immediately, its a small jump but its a jump alright.

I am waiting for the bigger Duke 350/375 whichever it is, don't think it'd fit your pillion requirements unless there is something drastically different about the design of the bike.

I hear faint rumors of a possible Ninja 400R launch (basically a 650R with a 400cc parallel twin heart), but then again as it is with all Ninja one drop and ther boom there go your savings!

Having a 220 is a tough spot to be in! Especially the Fi one's which are getting increasingly difficult to service, yet offer decent all round performance :/

PS: There is another possibility, and that is to sex up the 220 a bit. Slap on some super sticky tyres, go Joel big-bore and the works.. That should satiate you for a bit! Atleast you can hold on to the 220 for a year by when hopefully there should be some more options available!

Totally depends on the pillion. I have had a girl not complain even after riding non-stop for 200 kms, and then there are some who need breaks every 50 kms. (I hope none of these girls are reading this )

honest, wallet suiting, and best option. CBR250. Do not look further. Its got the grunt, the highway crunching ability, and great pillion comfort as well. Atleast way more than the other bikes on the list.

Get the ABS version, make trips safer not only for yourself, but the missus as well. I know my wife is gonna enjoy the Duke only from time to time.. Else she wanted a T-bird for the comfortable pillion seat!

Yes yes. Don't boast. You get a lot of girls!

But seriously is it comfortable for taller women. Like 5'7". Asking because it looks kind of cramped up.

Though I have never had to sit pillion on any bike!!!

I think anyone over 5'3" - 5'4" it would be a royal PITA.

Thats the problem -220 has pretty good all round competence.
Have waited for some time now and now getting tired of waiting. Have decided to take the plunge. My wife has no issues with the pillion seat - I am surprised too

The bigger duke is rumoured to be coming in 2 or 3 different versions. But thats some way off. Regarding sex-ing up the 220 - already have a Joel FFE - its a pain in the ear - but works well. But, nothing as smooth or fun as the bikes listed

You will lose interest soon as its a focused street bike plus the rear seat. Also there will always be a upgrade available which will leave you unhappy.

I considered the cbr too. But after riding my frnds cbr and p220 back to back, my POV is, its not worth it. Its a hop not a jump let alone an upgrade. You will get bored of it soon and there will be bigger upgrades like bigger ktm and the ninjas.
I would suggest against a TD. Go to a gtg or take a friends cbr and go for a drive. Get over the excitement of a new bike and see the bikes for what they are. Being with one bike for so long will be boring but you should get your moneys worth right? Even a R15 will be "exciting" to drive simple because its a different bike.

a ktm 350 is expected in a year and the ninja will always be around (and might get localised even)

in my experience, the ninja 250 is the one pulling all the strings (and there are multiple ride reports of ninja to the himalayas, what is your worry?) and seems like a sensible upgrade from the p220 and i would have upgraded if not for the news of a 350ktm. Hence waiting it out plus who knows, something more exciting might be available later.
                          Regardless, Life shall go on.

I am back after taking another test ride of the CBR. Truth be told, it wasn't very exciting. There is no happy zone after 6k rpm as in the ninja. The bike was straining a bit. However i am getting mixed feedback from many people. Ashish Sharma, one of the first owners of the CBR and a friend, highly recommended it and also gave some practical info on the bike. Another review i have is of a person who took the bike to Arunachal and wasn't happy with its performance at all. Too confusing Will be taking a test ride of Ashish's bike tomorrow(1yr plus old) to firm up an opinion.
The Red CBR is definitely a looker!
