Its been two weeks since I last asked for your opinions and I come seeking them again.

During these two weeks, I test drove a few more bikes and notable a couple of scooters. I realizes that the true question I was trying to answer was whether I wanted a bike or a scooter.

I got the answer when I rode an old TVS Scooty from Perungudi to Besant Nagar Beach in Chennai. Amidst a lot of traffic, I found the scooter very easy to ride, and every time I had to hit the brakes and accelerate again, I didn't have to worry about the gears and the clutch. I was half convinced.

And since I am new, I tried to spot cheaper bikes that offered a lot of goodies and a great experience. Weirdly, I found that none of the cheaper bikes offered too much comfort - no mono suspension, no broad wheels, not even a digital LCD display in some cases below 60K. Honestly, the FZ was the only bike that matched all my needs, but it too was too ans expensive and didn't offer good mileage (I gotta admit I can't keep below 60 when there is an opportunity to go faster)

So the question now is between two scooters. The Suzuki Access 125/Suzuki Swish and the Mahindra Rodeo RZ. Could you guys please help me pick one of them?
Did you try tr suzuki twins. Both carries same engine with different body work.
I would suggest suzuki swish because of a lil bit stylish than access. Dont go for rodeo(you will be pissed of with the asc in chennai for mahindra)

If you live anywhere near adyar, jav suzuki is a good place. Any place near gst road, jains's suzuki is a better place.

In my defence, I did try my hand at a lot of bikes before I deiced on getting a scooter. I even considered getting the TVS Jive but opted not to as many of the people I know didn't offer good opinions about it.

So I test drove these two scooters. Not considering any 110cc ones because of the better performance on these rides?

      Suzuki Access 125:

Known performer. Great pick up. Very smooth to ride. A better Fuel tank capacity of 6L. Mileage of 45-50 or anything close to that. Good ground clearance of 160m, which becomes a lot less with a pillion. And more known stuff. On road Rs.56,100.

Questions: Suzuki Service? Should I opt for Swish? Mileage under city traffic?

      Mahindra Rodeo RZ:

Very bland looks, looks girly but am quite impressed by everything else they offer. Same 125cc. Almost as smooth as Suzuki Access, some may not fins any big difference but I thought it was just a bit less-smooth. Brilliant little features - LCD Display,7 colors visible at might. Digital speedo, tachometer, odometer, fuel indicator, trip meter, clock etc. Display turns red when speeding over 60. Side stand beeper, big storage space under seat. Mobile hone charger, front fuel lid.

Bigger stuff: 7.5v Battery that is bigger. Better ground clearance than old Rodeo of 155mm. 59.38kmpl mileage claimed, dealer said 50 can be expected. FIRST 6 SERVICES FREE, 2 years warranty on the engine and 1 yea on the battery. On road price Rs.57000.

Questions: MAHINDRA SERVICE? 4.5L fuel tank enough?

Despite everything , I am still inclines towards the Access 125. Please guide me.and help me make a better choice.

I took the teat drive at JAV Suzuki. No problems there right? I will be buying it there if I decide on the Access.

The Swish wasnt available for a test drive. I want to know of its any good, maybe better internals?, basically anything thats different between the two. I like the Access simply cuz I prefer the looks. But I can change my mind if its got something better about it

And about the Rodeo RZ, I just want to have a look at my options. The Access is my top choice, but these Mahindra guys are trying to impress.

There was a 6 Scooter Comparo between

Activa Vs Maestro Vs Vespa Vs Dio Vs Wego Vs Swish

On Overdrive aired on CNBC on 25th June 2012.

Swish won that particular comparo. You can watch it all here.

That said, Rodeo RZ is a good enough scooter and shouldn't be discarded just because it has a smaller fuel tank, because the tradeoff comes with the facility of the easiest refueling in the segment.
All 125 cc scooters will be slightly off in terms of FE compared to the 110cc competition. So i would suggest you to include the Aviator(Disc) / Wego to your shortlist.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

I did some deep digging. The Swish and Access are indeed the same, like you said. The only difference is that the Swish is 5kg less. And would give 2-3km more per liter. I had a look at the Swish and didn't like it's looks much. It was a bit sporty, but the black/red Access looked much better, IMO.

The Aviator was in my shortlist but after listening to a lot of opinions and comparing my friends Activa with the Access, the 125 push did seem to be a bit better.

Any owners of the Rodeo RZ here at xBhp yet? I could really do with an ownership report. Or even a detailed first ride report.

For practicality and being able to start using it immediately, I recommend a scooter. Bike you need to be careful, and get adjusted first.

I'm posting this note for benefit of new riders to select and ride their first bike.

                Learning Bikes for Newbies
                1. You need self start. If bike stalls in traffic, you're so screwed. So don't buy a CD Dawn or Crux (like some of my friends who wanted ultra cheap and economic option for short travel did)
                2. Disc brakes are compulsory on bikes when you start. Even with experience, managing with drums alone is hard, and when you start biking, riding in wrong gear, etc drum brakes will not at all be sufficient to stop from hard acceleration
                3. Low end torque is a must. Once you have experience, you will get used to accessing torque at higher revvs but at the beginning you will love the feel of bike instantly moving with minimal throttle from 1st and 2nd gear.
                4. Go for bike which is popular and/or has cheap spares. If you fall then resultant expenses will be less.
                5. Tachometer will be helpful, but with bikes that have massive low end torque its not needed
                6. Comfortable enough to ride for YOU (opinions keep varying between person to person on same bike depending on height, strength and butt size )
                7. 100cc bikes may have mileage, but they are bad learners' bikes due to being undertorqued. Many uncles out there may swear by splendor, but lot of them learnt riding on high torque Vespas, Chetaks, Lambys, Yezdis, Yamahas and Bullets.

Just for the reference, the bike I learnt to ride on and still use (TVS-Suzuki Samurai) had NONE of the above qualities and I know how frustrating it was to learn, because it took me considerably longer to learn. Its not hard, but its a frustrating, slow and demoralizing process.

If you buy a bike that fills the above criteria, you're going to love it and find it very easy to use and will only take 1 week to get adjusted to. Going by above criteria, the cheapest option is Suzuki Slingshot (torque comes at VERY low RPMs and second gear launch is very easy even for beginners), then Bajaj Discover 150 (city king) then Yamaha SZ-R (the other city king) and then Yamaha FZ16 (lord of streets lol).

                Learning Scooters for Beginners
                1. Scooters must NEVER be ripped. They lack disc brakes (except expensive Honda Aviator) and if you crash you are in big trouble.
                2. If you are tall you will hate scooters on longer (even as much as 5km is enough to be called long in this case) rides. Trust me, the TVS Wego still gives me nightmares about the cramped feelings (I'm 180cm height) when I rode it
                3. Scooters have tiny wheels, so you should be very slow over humps, otherwise serious ass pain and even bottom of vehicle may get scraped
                4. Scooters have TINY petrol tanks so you need to keep refilling often, and don't forget this or you'll look stupid pushing a scooter to a petrol pump
                5. Honda scooters have amazing resale values. Mahindra are new but Rodeo RZ is interesting. Suzuki Access and Swish I have never seen any for 2nd hand sale so I guess they're pretty good too.

                General Rules for Beginners
                1. Helmet is important and compulsory. No thoughts about it. Buy one that suits your head and is ISI marked. I recommend Studds Chrome or Studds Ninja as great cheap entry-level helmets.
                2. Ride with L board. It looks stupid, but will warn others in case you don't ride well and prevent accidents.
                3. NEVER ride with pillion till you are extremely confident riding solo, even if it means upsetting your friends. This for your AND their safety
                4. Don't be shy to ask someone for help and walk you through riding lessons in free time. Having someone telling you what to do helps a lot.

                Hope it helps

Why don't you try Aviator DLX this gearless scooter comes with a front Disc. When you inclined towards a scooter then why not the better one featured!! Disc is a nice safety feature. Mileage is all in all same for all scooters, 109cc engine which is very sufficient for daily city ride. Additionally a honda Brand name!!!

                    @MHG

Thanks for the tip bro. This is my first bike but I am not completely new to riding. I test drove 5 bikes and was a bit confused on what to do. But the access was too overwhelming. Really smooth engine, I mean it was almost as good as riding an expensive bike. It sounded great too. I just feel a tiny bit hard pressed by the cool features of the Rodeo RZ.

                    @Somen

I understand your point. But frankly, the Aviator with disc brakes costs 61K. I feel that it is awfully expensive for a 110cc scooter. The discs are good, but I would trade it off for the superior pick up of the Access. It would definitely help me in tight spots when I need to start off at a green light. Also, about Honda, I have come across weird stories about their service and have also seen some of it myself. Don't want that kinda people annoying me with my very first ride.

If you are not completely new to riding, then getting a bike is actually worth it instead of a scooter. Why don't you check out the Slingshot ? Its priced similarly as the Access.

The question was always between a bike and an Access. I chose the latter mainly because I plan on doing most of my riding in the city and long trips are going to be really rare. Though I would get better mileage figures with a bike, I find the Access/Swish to be very complete with their amazing pick up, comfortable handling and seating and even the above average petrol tank of 6.7 litres.

The final call has almost been made and I am certain to book the Swish this weekend. Maybe I will go for a bike the next time

Understandable. Now that you have finalized the scoot, time for some brain trolling:

                          Have you considered:

                          1. Walking to work
                          2. Running to work
                          3. Cycling to work

instead of a motorized vehicle ? I mean scoot will be nice for the city, but 1.5km you can actually burn some calories in the process

We were planning to get a cycle each when we moved to Chennai :P

But on many occasions, its kinda hot to walk to work in the morning. Sometimes it rains, sometimes we want to get there soon etc. At night, we usually return around 8:30 to 9.

A good gear cycle cost Rs.7k and we were able to get a second hand scooty pep+ for Rs.15000, which I felt was a good deal. A cycle is good, but we still get a broader use case with a motor vehicle and its a good long term proposition

We live in a good community like apartments. We can always use the gym for free

A cycle to work? Really? ;-)
