  • First Timer, 65k budget , 150cc

    Hi guys,
I was thinking of buying a bike, first one. In fact, in my family (i.e.dad), no one's bought a bike and no one knows how to ride one, and the same gene has been tossed over to me (I don't know how to ride one, if you couldn't read between the lines )

Anyway, I tried convincing my parents to go for the FZ-16, but they aren't happy with the price, i.e. around 80k in delhi. They've allowed me to go for anything below 65k.
I'm 19, and I've been driving a Santro ever since I got my license, but now the charm's wearing off, i mean it's cutting deep into my pocket money. Its expensive. And biking would be a new experience, plus it will help me travel to college, tuitions etc.
I used to ride Scooter Kinetic Honda Nova, it was around 110cc i guess, so I need something bigger, thats why I am going for a 150cc segment.

So far, the best and only thing I could have and have done is go to every manufacturer showroom, and checked out specs and prices.
I have narrowed my choices to these:
    Bajaj-Discover 150
    Yamaha- SZ-R
    Honda-Stunner

I'd love to go for a decent looking, good mileage giving , comfortable ride etc etc.. what I mean is I need a good value for money bike. Since I dont how to ride, I havent taken test ride of any of them.

So, I come here before you biking experts to help me decide my first bike

    Thanks

(phew, thats a lot of words)

Try to include the new Discover 125ST and the Pulsar 135LS to that shortlist. Both are excellent bikes, especially for a 19yr old.

For all bikes upto 65k, this list should help.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

      125cc ..hmm.. I'm 6 ft, around 85-90 kg . I have a feeling it would feel a little too light, just like a scooty(100-110cc)
I thought 150cc would feel strong, a little macho for my first bike Is it true, or is it all rumor I hear around?

No its not about cc only. Although more the cc ideally without applying any other technology or parameter it should be more powerful and should have a better feel. But its also about -

          1) Torque - Rotational power expressed in Nm or Kgm/s^2. Also gives more pulling power especially from standstill. So the more the torque, the more weight your bike can take easily. Ever wondered why Diesel cars have more pulling and weight carrying capacity than their Petrol Counterparts?

          2) Power - The moving power. It defines how fast your vehicle can move with ofcourse not much weight on it. So more the bike has power the faster it would reach 0-60, 0-100.

          3) Power to weight ratio - The weight of the bike also matters alot. So better this ratio the more power you will get ultimately.

          4) Technology - The better the engine breathes, the more power it produces and even more FE. So 4 valve engine, or Multi-spark tech aims at better breathing of the engine. There are many other factors also like tyres etc.

Keeping in View your age and requirements, Disco 125ST is the best bet for you. Its refined better than earlier discovers, has monoshocks, nice power like 150cc commuter bikes, looks decently designed, has 4valve engine and mediocre weight. These bikes dont feel like scooty yaar. But Test Ride the bike before buying so that you get some info on its comfort and engine note.
          Whats there in a signature?

Thanks guys for all that advice, I really feel obliged. Like I said earlier, I dont know how to ride a bike yet, so I'll go to my friend's and learn it (you know, for test ride). I'll revert back to you guys in a few days. Thanks a lot.

Better go for a Discover125ST or Pulsar135LS because of the simple fact that they're packed with the latest technology, thus offer decent FE & also have decent power & torque.
Also, being a Bajaj product the spares are cheap. I mentioned this because you don't know riding and any damage you do to the bike you cost you less on your pocket.
Its the fusion of a two wheeled machine & a human being which creates a true biker.

Very Simple !! Yamaha SZ-r, it gives good performance with 50-55kmpl on highway and in city it's close to 50kmpl. Very fun to ride in city!

I can tell you one thing dude, that I'm of similar proportions as you (82-85kg, 6ft, long legs and heavy build) and 125cc bikes can also fulfil your needs wonderfully. Honda Stunner and Hero Ignitor are 125cc and ARE as big as 150cc bikes while Honda Shine, Yamaha SS125 and Discover 125 ST are all 125cc bikes that FEEL (to sit) as big as 150cc bikes and I can personally vouch for the Discover 125 ST that I test rode today. See my impressions here: http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/what-bik...tml#post845124

Fun fact: Discover 150 is actually SMALLER than most 125cc bikes.

Oh and If you want a bike purely for macho-ness and it SHOULD be 150cc, buy a Yamaha SZ-R and remove the visor glass (adds to the looks).
Currently without a vehicle. Uber App and Bangalore Metro serving all my travel needs.
