  • To R1 or not to R1, that is the question!

    Hi folks,

I have been longing to own the Yamaha R1 since the time I got access to the internet. Now that I am slowly inching towards the magic 30 age, the urge has now become a want.

I am THINKING extremely seriously about a Yamaha R1 50th Anniversary edition (OTR = Rs 17.2 L approx in Bangalore; second option being the black option which would cost me Rs 16.48.)

Have been talking to Orion motors and HDFC bank for the required formalities. I hope the R1 at this cost is not a bad decision? Specifically, is there any other option (which I should be exploring) which would give me more joy for the money spent.

The usage will be 50% urban, 50% touring... thats one of the reasons I am not going for a Harley (my wife had hots for the low rider.)

Please help me feel at ease with the decision.

The bank is currently offering me a 13% RRI loan. How does it compare to the possibilities from other banks?

If things go well, I would be a proud owner of a R1 soon. Otherwise, back to the drawing board.

    Regards,
    Karan Misra

PS: Other options which I have been considering but don't one up the R1: CB1000RR, Harley Super Glide, CBR1000RR.

If I may ask Sir, why not the Fz1?

Afterall its just another R1 without her clothes.

And I hear it cost 10.59lacs in Bangalore and is proudly on display at Bangalore Wheels, Dr Rajkumar Road, Rajajinagar.
P.S.: Its a black one. Do check it out. If you meet a certain Yusuf from the sales tell him you're from xbhp, he might let you throw a leg round her saddle and pump up the engine too.

        This simply doesn't make sense!!!

Either you're wasting your time or not serious about your purchase!!!

If you love R1, you'll buy nothing other than R1; see Strider, he loved R1 to core & finally the bike came to him rather than he going towards the bike.

the super bike riders will be able to comment more on the same however r1 runs a lot hotter than honda's and other in stop and go traffic and same has been confirmed by many reviewers as well..

also if you planned for 17 L OTR .. thats quite a significant figure..

you can look forward into ducati as well.. sports bike will not end up to a good tourer if you state 50 % touring..

look forward for a sports tourer and you will have both or touring and fast street bike.. rest the gurus can input with the models and price.

though if you heart is all set for R1 then dont think bout it.. go get you dream machine...!!!

After reading this if you end up buying R1, kindly prefer regular colours over LE. You can trust me on that?

Sorry for the late responses guys. I was of the impression that the thread had not been approved. Let me reply to all the responses now.

Thats a reasonable suggestion. Also, I do not want to exclude any options, because honestly speaking, I want to be happy with my purchase.

I had been looking at the Fz1 as well for a while. However, I don't know... something within me cries everytime I look at the R1. It's kinda hard to explain. I mean, I know even the Fireblade is an awesome bike and runs good and all, but there is sometime in my genes which makes my mind jump up in air whenever I see the R1... Also, since I am a computer geek myself, the spec sheet of the R1 keeps making me reconsider my decision for any lesser machines.

Very serious... I have been thinking about this for the last couple of years and honestly, I can see myself going for this this time for sure.

Yes, thats true... Heart is set on R1, but I do not want to have buyers remorse once I have made this very expensive purchase.

I thought the newer R1's handled India stop and go traffic better than the pre '09 models (I thought I read it in Xbhp itself.)

I have seen the grey model... somehow my heart still years for the black or the 50th anniversary edition colors.

I have been advised against Ducati because the current state of their showrooms (or the lack thereof.)

Also, maybe I over stated the touring bit... I will probably head out of Bangalore once (or max twice) a month for longish rides. So I am guessing a SBK will serve the purpose adequately... But another concern comes to mind, how are the fuel requirements for a R1 (and other vehicles in its class like the CB1000R, FZ1, CBR1000RR, etc.) Does it always need the high octane fuel? Would it not be a problem if there are no good pumps in the highway when outside Bangalore?

Aptly put together, SBKs are a strict no no for tours. Although there are various people who have touring on SBKs, our very own Sunny(Motographer) has covered whole India on a R1 but still the extreme sporty position makes it difficult to ride on for long. I am saying so because recently, one of my freind bought a CBR600RR and he rode it from Gujrat to New Delhi(almost 1200kms) and he quoted the same. You would need a break after every 50 - 100 kms of ride.

As for the options in this price bracket, you can opt for various machines ike Ducati, CBR100RR, CB1000R, FZ1, Bandit, Hayabusa(Bandit & Hayabusa) being excellent for touring. But if R1 is your first love, go fo it.

These were my views being a noob in SBK section. SBK owners and experts can pour in their thoughts if I am wrong.

Best of luck for your buy...

R1 is not all a Tourer bike in anyways!! it's a speed demon. ANd you will hardly use it for 200kms to 500kms a striaght.

Any time Ducati Multistrada is best for 17-18L i guess. It's awesome machine with four mode bike. which will be nice for you if you are interested in touring and city ride too.
