  • Duke 200??

    Hello everybody !!!

I have plans to get and upgrade from Honda unicorn 2005 to KTMs new baby duke 200!!!
I am from Mumbai and luckily won't be travelling much on day to day basis.apart from leisure rides.
My average commuting is not realistically too much and is around 15 kms a day.
But will be going out for long rides/ out station trips once a month or two.
The duke fits in my budget quite well, but my concerns are
My friend has a KTM and says that the maintainence of the bike goes upto 3 K a month?????? Is it true??
Also what challenges are faced in servicing and spares??

and yeah!! t add on to he recently said he gets a average of 25KMPL???? POSSIBLE???

    Thanks and regards!!
    Ride safe!!

Thanks for all your advice everybody !!
Booked the duke today will get it in 8 working days as of 2/08/12
    Cheers guys!

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

3k a month ?? what's he doing ?? Having an accident every week ? Your friend either doesn't know how to ride or is exaggerating so that you won't buy the Duke... I've had the Duke for 123 days, have done 3940 Kms till now. I upgraded from a Unicorn 2005 model as well. I have done about 42k kms in 7 years with the Unicorn. If you see I have already done close to a years worth of my riding on the Duke in about 4 months time frame. That shows how much I love riding the Duke.

I have done the first service back in April and it costed me about Rs 221. The only thing you need to do regularly i.e every 500kms is Lube the chain. I do it at the ASC every 500 to 800kms depending on my schedule. You can do it from home as well to save cost, however the ASC charge only Rs. 100 for that so I don't mind shelling out Rs. 100 every 500 - 800 kms . I get it water washed as well whenever I am leaving it for chain servicing. It takes about 15 mins to clean / lube the chain and another 15 mins for the water wash. I have enclosed my expense report on the Duke till now. I have installed the front crash pad that costed me Rs. 2221 and bought the KTM Cover for Rs. 720 ( Rs. 832 includes that in the report). Apart from that the only cost I incur is the Rs. 225 on chain servicing and water wash.

My office commute is about 20kms a day and weekend rides are about 120kms or so and I have done 350kms / day trips to near by places. As a tourer, the KTM fares well, however if that's your main purpose, then there are better bikes there. However, KTM is a KTM Trust me on that one.

I've never had to change anything in the bike, however some spares are not available readily. You'll have to wait for a couple of days for the ASC to order and get them delivered. Most spares are inexpensive, I have enclosed a pdf file that lists out the price of most spares. This was collated by Aravind Anbazhagan. ( It took me about 10 mins to upload the files trying to ensure that the zip / doc files were within xBhp limits. Also, couldn't upload docx / rar files, so had to redo the entire process )

      I hope this helps you.

Sounds really helpfull, specially with the pains takes for the detailing in regards to Linking of the files !! Well done god bless!!
On a personal note I will love to go for the duke without thinking twice!!
And like as you said I too believe that my friend doesn't wants me to buy one and maintain his executivity!! By keeping me away from buying a dike 200
So also can you tell me how well this bike cruises on the highway in speeds of 90-100 KMPH and what is the average fuel consumption?
What is the average it gives in the city??
Will like t o thank you again for all the details it means a Lott!
        Keep the good work on!
        Peace!
        Ride safe!!!

For the same question, you simply have to visit the ownership thread of KTM duke and see the details.

For touring details, visit the tourer's section where couple of guys have already posted detailed trip logs on their experience with the Duke.

The only effort needed from your end is to search and click a few hyperlinks that's about it. If you have already set your heart out on Duke and there is no confusion with any other bike. Then don't think so much, just go for it.

              Cheers,

Oops sorry guys... I missed the engine oil cost ... I changed to a Fully Synthetic which costed me Rs. 1450 for 2 ltrs out of which only 1.4ltrs was used.. so at second service I need to buy one more liter ...

Thanks to Aargee who pointed this out in another thread ... so include your oil cost during first service

This is exactly what I was wondering!!!
But this is a kind of fixed expense you just can't afford to evade!!

Touring wise it's decent... I cruise at speeds of 80 - 90... however, when the roads are clear and smooth, that's when we open him up Since it's Naked, windblast will be there, you can't avoid that...

Seat comfort, I find it comfortable to ride for an hour or so without any breaks...I adjust a bit here and there when I ride for longer periods of time ... I am happy with it's touring capability for my needs of short 350kms runs during the weekends.

That's exactly what I am looking for in these roads where there is no scarcity of pot holes! So even if the bike does more than 100+ with ease that won't be the ideal cruise speed!!
                        True regarding wind blast !!
I have a strong feeling about the comfort which the seats will offer for Long rides but you can't expect all that you want so I suppose that's a part of compromise for riders!!

                          P.S - I do not own a D200, but I did do a 400 km (200+200) round trip recently.

As mentioned, I experienced heavy windblast post 95 kmph. (true for any naked bike). Stretched it upto 120 kmph, could do more but I'd a friend on a ZMA. Hence, I stuck with him as the ZMA couldn't pull anymore.

                          Points observed:-
                          1. 80-90 kmph is cakewalk. You can easily cruise at these speeds. (even higher if you can tolerate the windblast)
                          2. Best mileage obtained while keeping the bike in 65-75 kmph in top gear. (I got 42 kmpl. )
                          3. An after-market seat cover (with extra foam) ensured that there were not many butt breaks. (we stopped only twice in the entire journey - 400 kms)
