  • Which Royal Enfield

    Hey guys,
I am planing on a Royal Enfield. My budget is about 1.2-1.4 lakhs.I am a hardcore fan of a royal enfield chopper. So I only want a Royal enfield. My priorities are :
1)Powerful engine (ability to cruse and also quickly accelerate to at least 60 km/h
2)Very comfortable ride quality and best possible Handling in the segment(by segment I mean the Royal Enfield portfolio)
    3)Decent efficiency(around 35-40 would do)
4)Trouble free ownership in terms of maintenance as well as services.

My biggest dilemma is should I choose RE classic 350 or Thunderbird 350.Since both the bike are of same price point I have huge confusion.Which is more city friendly and less maintenance.I can take care of the RE every week but not every day
What is the waiting period of RE thunderbird and classic in Chennai.
Should I wait for Thunderbird 500 and see if it is worth the extra money if I am able to stretch the budget. Also when will it be launched and is there any possibility of RE of refreshing the thunderbird 350 any time soon.

It would be great if you can clear that confusion cloud that is existing.:

R.E has only 2 engines 350 cc and 500 cc. The 500 cc one is currently available only in the Classic 500 model. All the other models (Classic 350, Bullet 350, Bullet Electra, Thunderbird Twinspark) in India have the same 350 cc engine with the same gearbox (I presume). Therefore between the Thunderbird 350 and Classic 350, I don't expect much difference in terms of ride feel as the power/torque output and the gearbox is the same.

I have heard this comment that the Thunderbird is sprung softer than the other RE models which means that it got plusher ride quality but handling on the other RE models is better (over the Thunderbird).

There shouldn't be too different since all of them have the same 350 cc engine.

It's a Royal Enfield that you are buying. If you want "trouble free" experience get a Hero/Honda/Yamaha/Kawasaki/Suzuki even Bajaj and TVS.. but stay away from a Royal Enfield if you can't dedicate some time for your bike.

Thanks for the reply...I really like the Classic 350 ....Just one more thing, what about the oil leaks..I have seen so many threads saying there is lots of oil leaking.I am ready to dedicate lots of time and sweat for the Bike. But despite that time and work would the bike leak some oil??.
Cause I do need to answer my dad for those oil leaks due to pricing
And also can I know about the waiting period in Chennai Classic 350.
And Is upswept silencer worth the extra money in terms of sound and how about the price of the silencer

Your budget and above three points are screaming for 350cc RE only!!
Though RE's UCE are giving 40+kmpl but it's only on highway rides. With in city you will get around 30-35kmpl only.

There is no guarantee that you will be with trouble free ownership!!
Mostly RE owners are living trouble free ownership for initial 2-3yrs but later it's the true color of RE. No matter even in that RE is best in comfort and cruising with pillion and most imp that MEGA TORQUE!!

For city it's CL350 only!!! TBTS is good for long rides aka Tours!!

If you compare comfort then eyes close it's TBTS. But handling is not that great as compare to other REs!!

TB500 is out of your budget, it will priced over 1.72L which is current price for CL500 Chrome!! When this much of amount comes into picture then CBR250ABS is the only answer to long rides with safety and Touring abilities!!!

I don't see any confusion here.

Your priorities are directly pointing to Cl350 only.
But INMO Electra Black is also same in all purpose of CL350, infact CL350 are so common now a days that you see atleast 1 CL350 in next 1 hr. Electra has less waiting period as compare to CL, I guess all over india it's uniformly >1yr waiting period for Cl350 any color and if it's silver then more 1-2 months!!

TBTS has a waiting period of 5-6months.

Don't go for CL500 as it's good in all aspects but it gives a mileage of 20-25kmpl +/- in city and highway 25-30kmpl only.

Oil leakages are something that resembles RE in India!! few of my friends are the lucky ones din't see the oil leakage even after 4 yrs, but few are there who lucky owners of oil leakage RE in 2yrs...So it's the way to keep and RE manufactures!!

                      ..lol...
                      now it's simple.
Your choices are Electra or CL 350 only.TBTS is not at all for city rides, it's mainly for Touring only with great comfort.

CL don't have a pillion friendly seats, waiting period close to a yr and i don't think that it worth waiting?? Because you have other option like Electra. Which is more huge kind of bike compare to CL, Same engine and performance.

Thanks for answering I am going to RE showroom today....Will see the bikes there and get a test ride hopefully and will choose a bike which wins my heart

And I am going to ride a bullet for the first time...So before test riding anything to be taken care of.

Also Is there anything that I should consider before I book the bike, would be able to get any discounts and the price tag is a hefty 1.28L....So any tips and things to be considered before booking??

Only disk brakes can be fitted (price ~8K) on standard and not self start.
Electra has few more features like gas filled shocks, metallic color and chrome .

But if you love standard than go for it . Lesser electrical lesser trouble.

I like the Standard only for one reason.... the tank logo which is hand made and even the paint job on the tank is handmade....
can i get the same tank or the design of standard 350 on electra. if yess.. then its a clear yes for electra..
                              Thanks in advance...
