  • Upgrading from a 100cc.. finally!!

Hello. This is my first post here and I thank everyone in advance for the help.

I have been riding a 100cc bike (Passion Plus) since 2005 (used a relative's old Luna for a year before that ). There was no chance of me getting an RX100 and so I wanted a Kinetic Laser back then but convincing parents to buy a non-Hero Honda bike was tougher than explaining why I got poor marks. I thought CBZ is cool enough. But no. Hero Honda to them meant Splendor or Passion. So Passion Plus it was. No complaints. It has served me very well. Took it to Pune with me and never left me anywhere stranded. But it is nearing its retirement age and since I have a decent salary now, thinking of going for an upgrade.

    My requirements :
    • Mainly for city riding. Home-Office-Home (6KM one way) and short-medium weekend trips to Diu or Udaipur (250-350Kms).
    • I am 5'5. So preferably not a tall bike (I had no problem with Passion but it wasn't ideal)
    • Budget is 1Lakh
    • Mileage : 40+ and I am happy
    • Speed : I have a fear of speed ever since I had an accident few years ago. Wasn't serious but the thought of 'what could have happened' kept me awake for weeks. I won't drive faster than 85-90 even on highways. What I need is a bike with good pickup and should not struggle on steep roads.
    • Looks : Not too important but sometimes I feel if I spend so much, it better look better than Passion.

    Bikes I have tried :
    1. R15 : Awesome bike. Perfect for my height and great control. Much more than 1Lakh but can get a used one for under 1L. But might be a bit of an overkill for someone who doesn't want to drive fast.
    2. Fazer : Friends call it a "kana"(one-eyed) bike but I liked it a lot. Looks better than Kareena Kapoor, excellent handling. Leaning towards it but isn't it a bit pricey for a 150cc? not that I will find it under-powered..
    3. FZ (the one without the cap) : IMO, the best looking bike I can afford. Seems the same as Fazer and I am slightly biased towards Yamaha bikes.
    4. 200NS : 23BHP.. Is it the best 'affordable' bike in India? Mindblowing specs for a 1Lakh bike. Found it a bit tall though and I won't be using even half the power of that beast.
    5. Avenger : When I told the Bajaj guys I am looking for a bike that suits my height, he showed me the Avenger . Nice but I have no confidence of driving that in Ahmedabad roads.
    6. Impulse : I tried this mostly with a hope Hero will have some exchange offers. Have to carry a portable ladder to drive this.

Try including GS150R to your list.
Heard it pulls of at low RPMs with ease and a sure highway mile-mucher. Not sure if it'll fit your height. TD it.
The limiter kicks in @11,500 rpm just within a second after the first shift..And, that's where the fun begins !! ;)

from your equation the only answer is either you change the finance scheme to low or start riding over 90kmph some times on highway....

        R15: -out as it's more than 1L
Frazer: when you are happy with 40kmpl then it's best to own it. Yamaha has good tech and reliability and engine life!! good handling and braking with decent power of 150cc. No it's not priced more as it's looks are kool!! INMO. Why "Kaana"?? you can get the light connections corrected to both headlamps glow at a same time!!
FZ nice to go with, i would suggest FZ over Frazer which will help you with some buck saving!!
200NS: leave it, it's for people who ride more on highways than city, and with speed!!
Avenger: good to own, but it has good power too, but very comfortable bike. not that good for pilion.
        IMpulse: not from my list!!

FZ is the best fit in your sums....check for the SVC and handling more than mileage!! becuase you are going to travel 6kms- 10kms only daily, and tours are of some times, not very week or every month, if even you tour every month then FZ or Awenger!!

I've heard GS150 to be good bike, but it would be rather tall for you.

FZ would be a real good option. Fazer is not VFM IMHO.
FZ returns around 40kmpl and easy to ride in city. Height also should be apt for you.
I think you can include Apache also in the list.

Just a quick question - why 150's(Xtreme/Hunk) from Hero not in your list?

yup. Hunk and cbz should be cool 150cc dudes! In terms of looks, mileage, anythin! But i guess your height might be a problem. Take a td to know better. Yam fz is the best bike. Apart from mileage. But you say you wil not go more than 90? Then obviously in cities i take it you are a sane rider. By your kinda riding maybe mileage would not be a problem

              ^^^^^^^buddy 200 ns is a street-fighter,it is more of a city bike than highway-mile-muncher.
who told ya that avenger is bad for pillion?what is r15 v2 or duke then?
btw fazer is definitely overpriced and underpowered.

ts i suggest you to pick something from hero or honda 150cc stable.
and the question remains why do i race?
every finishing line is the begining of a new race.

#i don't subscribe to co-incidence,either it is the rider or the other moron on the road

(:)people keeps on saying add spark to life, bajaj got hold of that idea and added an extra spark to bike.

The narrow rear seat of Avenger is really very uncomfortable to sit even for 20-30 kms in city.

Even i don't think that Avenger is bad for pillion but real fact is i see it's uncomfortabe for ladies , even somewhere more he had written that after the delivery!!

What dude ?? you get hyper!! and any heighted bike will be uncomfortable for pillion regardless of any model, it's only TBTS where people have not complained for pillion comfort!

                  and don't be shocked!!
Don't you think R15 V2 is super duper uncomfortable for pillion!!

Personally NS and Duke i don't think of using it in city! where will we use that 200cc power ?? it's good for highways if we tour in every 2 months atleast or our rides consist 70% of highway ride daily, else nope!!

First of all, Welcome to Xbhp.

Why dont you include karizma r to your list. Best VFM AFAIK since being an owner for quite along time. It is within a lakh and delivers 40+ for sure for your kind of ride mentioned here.
My cousin is also 5.5" and can manage zma pretty well even in an offroad ride where a constant balance is required.
riding between 85-90 is the sweetest on a zma and it can be done effortlessly. Also, power and pick up is good indeed very good even on a very very steep road. Tried and tested with a 90 kg pillon.
Not too glamorous or sexxy..but hot in terms of style.
The riding comfort, handling, cruisability and bullet proof engine are the best points of a zma which still makes people too admire it. Im one among.
You can also try out CB Unicorn.
Anyways all the best for your Bike!

Thank you antz.bin for approving the thread.

Have been reading the replies in office on my phone. Just got home (thanks to the rains) to reply.

                        neevarp16, Satson
Thank you guys. GS150r is indeed a very good bike. Friend owns one and is quite happy with both performance and mileage. For me though, it is slightly bulky and tall. But I will try it again with an 'owning POV' and see if I can manage it.

Satson, I like Apache as a bike but I was not at all happy with the TVS guys here. I was looking at Apache180, sat on it to check the height, walked around. No one came. Then I went and asked the guy whether I can see the 160 Model. He said it is not here and asked whether I wanted to see the "Star" :| Another guy told me 160 isnt good and is taller than 180. If the sales guys are like this, how will the service be? I didn't want to take the risk. Apache deserves better employees to sell her.

                        SatSon, abhi, sayank,
I am sure Hero makes excellent bikes. Having ridden Passion Plus for 7 yrs, I admire its reliability. The 150cc ones are newer and would be much better but I want to move away from Hero this time. The one Hero I was curious about was Karizma. Test Drove that. Really a class bike.

Thank you Somen. R15 second hand I can get around 1lakh. You are an owner I guess. Would you recommend the bike? I totally agree with Fazer's looks. Every color screams "look at me" but the Competition White is something else.. Beatiful.

                        PrinceSirohi,
Thank you. I really like the FZ.

                        Thanks for the welcome Vivekarizma
Karizma is a great bike. It was the only Hero bike I tried now. But I want to move away from Hero this time. I'll probably get the version after ZMA-R after I get used to some touring in the next bike. Also hope it will be slightly smaller

                        Few other points:

                        1) Of the Bikes I test drove, both my legs reach the ground the most in FZ (and Fazer too I think). Is it important for the legs to reach? I drove Passion all these years with only one leg reaching the ground but then it was not a powerful bike and I stayed in limits.

                        2) Pillion comfort isn't necessary. Mostly will drive alone. I've suffered sitting in pillion of friends' bikes. It is their turn now And when I get married, will get a car (or a side car if I cannot afford )

                        3) I am leaning towards the Yamaha ones. Partly because I was never able to afford RX100 when I wanted it.

                        4) Somen, I asked the Yamaha guy about turning both lights on. He said warranty of electricals wont be valid if I try that Should I bribe the service guy?

                        5) FZ seems perfect for me but I am in love with the competition white. FZ-s has it but I am not a fan of the small Cap it has. So Fazer...

                        6) I am very inspired by some of the travelogues here. I am giving me two years to get the skills required to go on a long-ish tour. Can the Yamaha FZ-bros handle hills, kichad and rough roads?

                        7) Fazer has a huge head and although it didnt cause me any problem during the test drive, I would like to know from owners whether they find it a bit of a hassle in traffic jams.

Thank you for the patience. It will be the first bike I buy with my $$. So I just want to make sure from you experts that it is a right one.

Actually Pulsar 200NS was a solid bike which you could buy but since you don't want a tall bike, want to limit your budget to 1Lakh, don't want much power, love Yamaha brand, want a good looking bike then why to think more go get yourself a Fazer/FZ-S. It has class handling for a diamond frame, a light weight body, apt for average height people, one of the most stressfree engines for city rides, nice brakes. Apart from mileage its a class in 150cc bikes. GS is ok but FZ series is better if mileage is not top priority.
