  • A bash-around bike?

I love to travel and I work in IT. That's an oxymoron there fellas. The dearth of leaves leaves me frustrated and weekends, or weekend plus one, is the most I often get. This prevents me from riding to and fro to many nice places around. I could take a train, but then roaming around the destination for attractions would be a major pain. Hence my soultion: book tickets on train, load bike, do all the running around, get back, unload bike.

I currently own a 2009 RE Electra 5S, which has been just as an Enfield is supposed to be: unreliable, as proven during my LL trip a couple of months back. I would not want to lug this around in trains; I've see what they do to bikes loaded in luggage compartment. The bike has a place and it's in town, where mechanics can attend to it.

Right now, I am looking for a bike which suits the following purposes:
    1. It must be dependable
    2. It must be capable of being bashed around in train luggage compartments
    3. It should not attract unwanted attention in unknown places
    4. It's spares must be available widely and cheaply
    5. Basic repairs must be easy to make
    6. Cheap initial cost as second hand bike

Now I could go buy one of the thousands Hero Honda's or Bajaj's in the market today, but I would like to hear opinions which bikes would fit the criteria I've set above closely.

My suggestion would be to get yourself a black P180/P220 S. Both will fit in your criteria and would have good enough power for most touring purposes.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

      Re: A bash-around bike?

I go with what mr.mod said. The p180/220 is your bike. I would say impulse, but what with the rare spares and news about hero phasing out the bike, id say don't even think about the impulse

Any bike apart from RE, but new RE is way better then previous ones!! We have many happy CL owners!! But when a person buys a RE he very well know that Bike needs SVC periodically and little more attention! And if you thought RE would be like Jap's or Hero or Baj then you made a mistake there it self. Actually before you go to any tour get your bike check nicely, nothing is hard and tough like RE in touring or Rail transport.

No bikes not even RE is 100% bash proof! But it's the only the hard contendor!!

Apart from SBK, R15/CBR/Duke no bike would attract any one

        Any Bajaj or Hero product!!

This question depends on your pocket!! But if as a normal person again Hero or Bajaj, more over Bajaj!!

        Depends on condition of bike.

        Bajaj only

See friend, low cost SVC currently speaks only Bajaj. But even there is Hero which has Nation wide SVC, which will be more on touring comfort!!

Go with Avenger it's very nice cruiser for touring and reliable too with P220 engine!!

Reliable Bike for a Weekend ride is Honda Unicorn, can munch miles on miles without any problem with its great engine.Smooth ,reliable and can last for years ,this is coming from a p150 rider from 6 years. i am also a regular weekend rider.coming from RE, repairs and Normal Niggles on other Bikes should be walk in park for you. All i remember doing on Long drives is Lube the chain beside regular 1k Air filer cleaning and 2k Km oil change. That s new age bikes for you.
dont remember them breaking down ever except for punctures . My Bike did shut down on long rides due to over heating but was running fine after a ten minute break.

i beleive you are looking for a 2nd hand bike , go for FZ or unicorn both can cruise at 80 effortlessly all day. i have Ridden them on extensive tours (friend's bike) and those are better in terms of Pulsar for long 300+ km in a day type rides .no i am not talking of covering the distance i am talking of response from the engine after covering 300km in one go.on a serious note i dont recommed to buy a 2nd hand pulsar (personal view) for weekend ride better get a new one . Pulsar is a awesume VFM bike for city ride but for Weekend ride you deserve better.

Yamaha has a bit of average and spare parts problem but i am addicted to low and mid torque on FZ . you can take a test drive and deceide for yourself.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I have went through them, now let me tell you my experience in a remote area this weekend.

Jagdalpur is a tribal town in Chattisgarh where I went to this weekend. The mode of commute was public transport, just to see what the locals drive, rather than lugging around my RE. The town, and others around it, has been in news due to wrong reasons. Naxalite violence mostly. Remember Dantewada and Sukma? So if I go there flashing my FZ or Unicorn or Avenger, chances are, I will have to walk the way back to nearest habitation.

Most bike running outside the town, where the areas worth visiting are located, were HH machines, 100cc ones. Some posts have mentioned that HH should be reliable since it has been around for years, and the eye-candy value is close to nil for an old bike. Another interesting suggestion on another forum said that 100cc bikes are more prone to theft as the engines are used in generators!!

Two-strokers are obviously out of the picture, they are the preferred means of getaways even now, much like they were in the 90's. Let's come up with any more options.

I have a friend who stays in Jagdalpur,CG. Let me get in touch with him.

My suggestion is still valid though. A black Pulsar is almost indistinguishable from its siblings for the untrained eye. If you change the 180/200/220 sticker to 150, nobody would even notice the difference. Being the most sold 150cc bike helps it in not gathering too much attention. Since it doesn't come with the uber efficient reliable 97.2cc Hero Honda engine, and given current petrol prices, being used as a genset is also a very bleak possibility. Some extra horses will help you outrun the thugs in case you have a "Bhaag dhanno bhaag" scenario.

More importantly, do remember to carry spare cash at places they might not look (inside undies/taped to the back). Also do carry a chain for the bike so that you can secure it to something stable (like a lamp-post) OR park it indoors whenever parking overnight. Finally, do something to your bike every night which would ensure that the bike doesn't start no matter how many times the thief kicks/cranks.. something like disconnecting some wire/fuse/connector from somewhere (this has to be your own secret).

Nice response antz! I am a little inclined to P150/180, but Bajaj engines do not age well. My intent of buying a second-hand bike that has less km on odo will have to be very selective in this case. BTW, I hope the dhanno would help outrun some sharp arrows too, since quite a large part of Orissa and CG are tribal areas, where I intend to roam around.

I have an Eagle Creek belt with an inner zipper, a few folded 500s go in there always! On bike, I have to devise something to this effect. For bike's safety, I use Bully disc lock and chain, although the disc lock is much more convenient! I will do some work on the last part too, although LL has taught me some tricks I can use. I have a GPS+GSM based theft alert mechanism lying, too lazy to test it out. Check here: Portable Mini GSM/GPRS/GPS Tracker for Personal Remote Positioning - Worldwide Free Shipping - DX

God I wish ALL of our country was safe enough to camp in the open, let alone roaming alone.

If you are going for a second hand bike, i'd suggest you go for the good old Karizma, remove the fairing assembly and fix a round samurai H/L assembly and enjoy you rides.
