  • Bike for my DAD - Dream Yuga or Splendor or Discover 100 or Hayate ?

    Hi Guyz,

    My requirements .

    1. A hassle free bike - I need a bike which does not require frequent visit to Service Centers.
    2. A good mileage.
    3. CC is not a problem and my Dad is hesitant to Disc Brakes
    4. Low maintenance
5 almost 99% of the time, my dad will be accompanied by my Mom who weigh 85 kgs and i need a rock solid stable bike at lower speeds.
    6. Budget - Not an issue
    7. Life - 5 years

I think the following bikes fall in the 100-125 cc segment

    1. Dream Yuga
    2. Discover 100cc
    3. Splendor +
    4. Passion Pro
    5. Hayate

etc. Kindly suggest a bike asap. Counting on you guys.

    Thanks,
    Karthik

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

My choice would be a 150cc bike because if Mom is 85kg then even dad would be close or more so if we take an example of 85kg also then a bike should be good with 170kg with it's own weight....

My take would be Discover 150 or Hero Achiever(if avialble) or Yamaha SZr.

ABove all are realible and less prone to visit SVC.

Yamaha would be more great as it's Yamaha Tech with good engine.

Now if you go beyond 150cc then surely there would be a compromise performance with pillion.

Yamaha SZr it is, else which ever you like from above!!

Thanks for your valuable suggestion. !! I wish to clarify few things.

        1. My dad is 55 odd KGS and he is 5"4 inches
        2. He wont ride the bike beyond 50 kmph. He is very cautious about it .
        3. Hardly he would ride the bike beyond 10 kms a day.

Because of these reasons, i thought of a bike which has a low weight, and since he will clock only less kms, a lighter engine would suffice. Is there anything wrong in this aspect. ?

What is the disadvantage of a lighter bike >? Waiting for valuable feedback !

I am 5.5 and i handle all bikes pretty wel, this would be because i am prone to bikes and car.

          Now for your query:

Any 100cc or 125 cc is ok and will do the work, but there is something called as performance....which will be lacking as comapre to 150cc...
Whether you use the full power of 150cc or not it's on you but it's better to have a little big engine than lowest one.

Actually any 100 or 125cc would compromise with pillion, where as 150cc would do it with a flick of an eye...
My moto here is, your dad would be travelling with your mom, so 150 cc would help your dad to ride more efficiently then 100cc because 150cc will pull him along with your Dad and Mom very effortlessly by just a twist of his right wrist!!

I am not talking on speed or mileage, I am stressing on power which is needed for pillion ride and handling.

SZr is very nice in riding with comfort/Handling and braking.

TR with your dad and mom then decide it, else you can check Discover 150 too or Achiever.

Even there is Boxer 150 with much low height. I don't think your dad would have problem with any above mentioned bike!!

I mirror somen's thoughts above, for stress free riding you need lots of torque to reduce the number of gear shifts required inside the city and the 100cc bikes lack the torque which will require your father to work frequently on the gear shifts. Besides there isnt much difference of weight between discover 100, 125 and 150 as all other cycle parts remain same. If not for the Disco 150, i suggest strongly the discover 125 which is a mix of both the worlds Pinch of 150's performance with pinch of 100cc's efficiency.

              Hi,

If you are only thinking of 100-125cc segment then not swaying away from your requirement among the choice list you have mentioned...i would say Go for Honda Dream Yuga. little or no maintenance, butter smooth engine and gearbox, ridiculous mileage of 74+ kmpl (a friend of mine has hit close to 90kmpl, So one tankful is more than enough to run for a month!). Splendor has uncomfortable an riding position now with the latest gen models.

Or else if you do think about 150cc category and price no concern then i would recommend the ever so reliable Honda Unicorn from mileage and maintenance perspective. Looks are dated but it is indeed a workhorse and won't ever die on you.

              Cheers,

Way back in 2001 when my dad bought me a splendor.. and not a passion! I was so disheartened. Odd looks! after owning it for more than 10 years and 1 lakh km. I can assure you its the best bike in the budget still. With perks like self start and alloys added to it(splendour pro). At that time my friends asked me to go for passion, recently launched(then) LML bikes, Bajaj Calibre etc. Some of the bikes are non existing now on the streets - My color/year splendors can be found so easily.
Bottom line is - if your dad can manage the looks on the bike, it is a value for money bike.
Secondly, all aesthetic parts are widely available in after market shops. It is the most easy to maintain bike in its segment. This is where a Dream yuga will lack for sometime. Finding lights, indicators, plastic body parts, petrol locks etc will be costlier than a bike that's more than a decade old.
In my opinion the engine of a dream yuga is horrible looking (saying the least) in comparison to splendors engine compartment where void spaces are well filled up by tool box etc.
The seats are straight and low on which even my grandmother used to sit with ease(your parents will only grow older)
The carrier (though it is the most awkward looking thing on the bike) had proven to be very very handy when I needed it.. (example - some calls from home - Plz bring a gift for the newly born kid in the neighbors house - Tied a baby bathtub on the carrier and I was home.. There are hundreds of these examples which I can give - From groceries to Microwave!!)
And for those who think his dad should upgrade to a 150 cc!! Why!? its not a 50cc its a 100cc bike and me and my father (total 140 kgs) used to do 70 km/hr easily! His dad doesnt intend to go above 50!! I think a 100cc is more than sufficient (Young lads will disagree for sure)
Anyways, that's my own personal opinion!! Dream Yuga and other bike owners can share their experiences and help the threadstarter out.

I suggest you ditch all 100cc and most 125cc bikes and jump straight to entry-level 150cc. Reason being to pull that weight you need lots of torque, especially up inclines and small pothole filled muddy roads and speed breakers where vehicle with low torque will feel very weak and gets annoying to ride. Bajaj Boxer BM150 is the cheapest bike you should be looking at and above that consider Bajaj Discover 150. After that maybe Yamaha SZ-X (if you don't want to go for disc brakes) or SZ-R (if you want disc brakes). Ask your father to test ride all these WITH your mother as pillion if possible and then decide. I don't think you need to look beyond these options. They are among the best bikes for city commutes with pillion.
Currently without a vehicle. Uber App and Bangalore Metro serving all my travel needs.

Splendour is sufficient for your needs!!. Your buying a bike for your dad!! So youngster's opinion would obviously be different as mentioned by someone else before!! I had and still have a cd100.. 98 cc engine!! Me, my dad and my mom would go on it...!! I totally disagree with all this pull and stuff.. Every freaking bike is designed for 2 people! If pull was a matter, cd100, fiero, splendour, etc would not have ever sold. splendour and other 100cc bikes would no where be in market! 150cc can do it easily.. Its the only difference.. Plus you say your dad does not go above 50.. 100cc would be sufficient..

Well, can 100cc bike do the job for you? yes, certainly it can. Will a 150cc be more comfortable, stress free, again yes it will be. So, short answer is to ask your Dad to take test ride of short listed bikes from 100cc/125cc/150cc and then decide which one he wants to go with. Remember 150cc is not necessarily about speed, it's about stress free riding due to it's higher torque and the resultant acceleration. Without a doubt, you will take hit on mileage as you go up the CC ladder. Make sure you end up with the best compromise, coz mileage is important, but not at the cost of comfort/stress free riding. I guess Disco 150 is as light as a 100cc bike (not literally though!), so your Dad shouldn't have a problem with handling such light bikes. My advice is to shortlist bikes upto 150cc and then have your Dad test with pillion.

Disc brake is like a knife. When put to proper use, the results are amazing.Try convincing uncle about that.Ask him to get acquainted with it first.

I think Disco150 is better suit to your father. Its light in weight and simple body lines and good torque compared to other 100 and 125CC's. It can carry load and easy to maintain.
