  • Help me decide my first bike!

    Hi all,
Myself is Krishna from Kolkata and I'm looking for my first bike. My budget is between 60,000-65,000, height is 5.5, weight 63 kg.s. I'll be riding mostly alone to my office which is 15 km.s away. Occasional long drives with my wife as pillion will be there. Looking for mileage between 55 kmpl. After a lot of research, I've shortlisted the following bikes:
    1.
    Yamaha SS125
    2. Yamaha SZ-R
    3. Discover 125 ST
Among all these, I'm really inclined towards
Yamaha SS125(I've taken a few rides) but since hearing about SZ-R, I'm in a dilemma. How will it fare against Yamaha SS125 as far as mileage and pillion comfort is concerned? Also, will it be ok for my body stature? I'm also not sure about body and engine quality of Bajaj. Otherwise, Discover ST is a good bike. I've found similar issues on other sites but those are not very helpful. Please advice.

    Yamaha SS 125

    4
    Yamaha SZ-R
    43.75%
    7
    Discover ST 125
    31.25%

    The poll is expired.

A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

firstly ss 125 is a very well made bike, and probably most stable among other 125 cc bikes at high speed.but it is also the most underrated, blame it on yamaha's lack of interest in promoting this commuter.
coming to sz-r,it is cheap ,but not frugal. i would rather choose ss over sz-r despite of later having bigger heart.
lastly our very own bajaj, apparently producer of "cheap quality bikes with unreliable engine",has a very good bike in the offering under discover brand.it is most contemporary of the 3 and probably most vfm too.
and the question remains why do i race?
every finishing line is the begining of a new race.

#i have learnt to manipulate my own adrenaline and the perception of biking is different.
      #overkill is underrated.
#how random roads may appear there is always a destination.sigpic
#i don't subscribe to co-incidence,either it is the rider or the other moron on the road

(:)people keeps on saying add spark to life, bajaj got hold of that idea and added an extra spark to bike.

Rightly said SS 125 is the best of 125's but because of Yamaha's marketing wing that bike didn't shine... SZ is a very good bike for that price tag and it has bigger heart when compared to SS 125 which is very smooth and reliable. If you need a bike for long term with good reliability go with SZ or SS 125...
On the other if you are concerned about fuel economy and less maintenance (spares cost) go with discover...
        Yamaha RX100 (1993)
        Yamaha RX135 (2000)
        Bajaj Pulsar 150 (2004)
        Yamaha FZ-25 (2017)
        TVS N-Torq (2018)

please do a p135 vs szr.. My take would be anyome of these bikes for your requirements. Plz check rear seat comfort for the lady pillion in p135. I am not sure about it.

Any 125cc bike would give you a mileage of 55-65+kmpl straight!
Yamaha is a tough company and produces good quality and engine bikes.
Similarly Bajaj is also into fight and produces affordable good bikes.

The thing that you need to bother is:
                1. Travelling with pillion on weekends or some functions, Very IMP!!
                2. Mileage , you would be travelling 15kms one side so both = 30kms, which is almost affordable, Very IMP

From the above choices SZ-r is the best option, though it will give less kmpl as comapre to 125cc but it won't be less than 50kmpl.
The benefits here would be, any given day 150cc would easily take the load of a pillion too, perform normally, no engine stress and handling would be good too.
On other hand 125cc would also do a pillion, but with some strain on engine, which won't be called easy ride or stress free ride for engine. Mileage would be more in 125cc.

But the satisfaction which a person would love to have as per mileage and power and pillion comfort with good handling would be in SZr.

SZr is afffordable approx 65K OTR.

SZr is any time a gem for what price it comes. Check the ownership thread for more.

Other option would be Discover 150, Hero Achiever, P150
                IF 125cc then D125, SS125, Ignitor.

The best way to judge is take a TD with Pillion on 125 and 150cc.

@Somen : One question. My height is only 5.5 and I've heard and read that SZ-R is good for tall people. Any inputs on that?
Also, I personally don't like split sits.

I am 5.5' and enjoy riding my friends SZr always, it's very comfortable and I enjoy maneuvering it in Traffic with pillion then my R15. It has good low-mid range torque and brakes are also good. Mileage what my friend says is 50-55kmpl, he has highway ride daily, 20%- 80% city - Highway

Once again, thanks to everyone for their time and valuable suggestions. After considering all the aspects, I've decided to book an SS125 keeping in mind it's mileage. It'll give me around 8-10 km.s more than the SZ-R and that makes a difference as I expect my bike to run for 400 km.s/month. And comparing the actual mileages of these two, I'll be able to save around rs. 1400/year. Pardon me if I'm sounding too calculative. But, I really don't think that I need the throttle of a 150cc while travelling to and fro my office. Please correct me if I'm wrong anywhere. I visited the Yamaha factory outlet in Kolkata yesterday and the gentleman from the showroom attending me also emphasized on SS125. What do you think?

IF you are going with the SS125 the first thing which i would suggest is to change the rear tyre to atleast a little 10mm fatter tyre, coz i feel the rear tyre is too thin...... rest is upto you....

Thats a good choice I must say. With SS125, you are getting a pretty well built bike, sz-r is not as solid as ss125, better tyres (MRF vs TVS) and better mileage and cheaper and only 1bhp less. Congrats. so what is the on-road price at kolkata?
